Doug Liman directing Knight Rider TV movie for this season--minus The Hoff
Supposedly this will serve as a backdoor pilot for a possible new Knight Rider series.

I was going to say, didn't they do a TV movie years ago as an update? Like a future version?

I think it was 1991 for Knight Rider 2000, which was the Hoff's last appearance as Michael Knight.
Team Knight Rider was 1 and done TV series that I believe was only in syndication. One of the characters I vaguely recalled mentioned that her father was Michael Knight.

"According to Variety, the project is said to be "Transformers-inspired" and NBC has already ordered a two-hour backdoor pilot for the series, which it plans to air at some point later this season. If the pilot takes, a series could be on the schedule by next fall.
Limon is open to directing (can't wait to see the budget overruns on that front), should his feature schedule allow him to take the gig. Dave Andron, who wrote Raines for NBC, has been hired to update the series and will serve as supervising producer on the project.
One caveat: that Transformers tag. Ben Silverman was apparently so taken with the recent Michael Bay bombastic opus that he is pushing for K.I.T.T. and the other sentient cars (apparently evil ones, too) to, er, shapeshift into new and interesting shapes and models. Otherwise, the story--about a man who fights crime with the aid of his bitchin' vehicle--will remain pretty much the same. But, man, that transforming car suggestion worries me quite a bit." I think that could be pretty cool. A nice way to update the series.

This sounds like it is about two steps away from being some type of Japanese show.
Require Michael Knight to know some form of martial arts and make KITT turn into into a giant robot and it would spot on for Japanese TV.

Soap star gets keys to "Knight Rider" TV movie
By Nellie Andreeva
Fri Nov 2, 8:51 AM ET
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Meet the new Knight Rider. "All My Children" hunk Justin Bruening is set as the lead in NBC's two-hour movie "Knight Rider," a "Transformers"-inspired sequel to the 1980s series about a man and his talking car.
If successful, the movie could lay the groundwork for a new series.
Bruening will play the son of Michael Knight, the character played by David Hasselhoff in the original series. And like father, like son, the choice of Bruening closely resembles Hasselhoff's casting a quarter-century ago.
Like Bruening, Hasselhoff was a soap star ("The Young & the Restless") with few other credits when he landed "Knight Rider." He was almost the same age as Bruening, who is 28.
Bruening also follows in the footsteps of fellow "Children" alum Josh Duhamel, who made the transition to a primetime leading man as the star of NBC's "Las Vegas."
Bruening plays Jamie Martin on "Children" and also had a role on the ABC soap "One Life to Live."

Suddenly I am reminded of when Hasslehoff was "on" Celebrity Deathmatch and KITT was a dunebuggy.
What does this have to do with his "son"? Not a damn thing.
KITT better fly this time!

Never heard of Deanna Russo, but a Google image search reveals that she's easy on the eyes.
Pair help KITT-start new 'Rider'
By Nellie Andreeva
Nov 20, 2007
David Hasselhoff is in talks to appear on NBC's "Knight Rider," reprising his role as Michael Knight from the original series.
Additionally, "The Young & the Restless" co-star Deanna Russo has landed the female lead in the movie/backdoor pilot opposite fellow soap star Justin Bruening.
"Rider," from UMS and Dutch Oven Prods., is a sequel to the 1980s series that centers on Mike Tracer (Bruening), Michael Knight's son who never knew his dad.
Burned by his love for childhood best friend and one-time girlfriend Sarah Kamen (Russo), Mike is wasting away in Las Vegas when Sarah reappears and is willing to pay off Mike's gambling debt in exchange for help.
Sarah is the brilliant estranged daughter of KITT inventor Charles Kamen, who works as an assistant professor in the engineering department at Stanford. When she receives word from talking-car KITT (Knight Industries Three Thousand) that her father is missing, she and KITT set out to find and recruit Mike.
Russo, who plays Logan Armstrong on "Restless," is repped by Defining Artists and Himber Entertainment.

Now I wonder if this movie will stay consistent with our current times in 2007 or create the advanced future that the 1991 Knight Rider TV Movie did. I remember the Knight Rider TV movie took place in the year 2000.
