I really liked it. I could do without the music constantly blaring but I think it does fit with the whole concept of the show. Also, I'd like to see more intense drama (think SFU) but I also understand what this show is going for: high class camp.
I was laughing out loud at the beginning when Nick couldn't get into his dad's funeral while the Darlings strolled on by and I enjoyed Brian Darling's "ordeal" the most.

It is basically a more dramatic Arrested Development.

I agree, it was pretty good. I wasn't blown away, but it's entertaining enough for me to watch a few more episodes. I'm also not sure about the whole "I'm going to find who killed my father" thing, though. It seems like an unnecessary plotline..

I enjoyed that - got attached to the characters almost immediately.
Kind of a cross between Arrested Development, Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives.

I think they need that to make it believable that he would actually continue to work for such a screwed-up family.

If I thought some Darling killed my dad by paying an airplane mechanic to fuss with the the craft, I think I would have still taken a cab home instead of the helicopter. That was a ballsy move.

I'm mixed on this one. I also immediately thought it was a dramatic Arrested Development. I felt like they didn't know whether they wanted it to be a drama or a comedy, and I also thought the blaring music was a bit distracting.
I might give it another episode or two to see how it develops.

At the end, I'm not sure that plot-line is really believable, at least to me, that he's gonna stay working for the Darlings to find out who killed his father. I'll give it another episode or two.
He figured it was worth the money, until he realized just how much babysitting work it required just on the first day.

I'll give this one another couple of episodes but I don't think it's my kind of show. I've never really been into prime time soaps (or daytime soaps, for that matter).

I don't think people should be too judgemental of a first episode. The show is just trying to find it's groove. There is every reason to believe that a show will get better than episode 1. Things will change on the upcoming episodes, that's a given because every series changes. Series are developed on the prospect of having an ongoing story element with characters that should grow.
It's sort of like judging the first 5 minutes of a film like it's the whole thing. That's why a lot of shows fail, because people make snap judgements.

There's a lot of excess junk in this show. Hopefully that's the typical pilot filler, and future episodes will trim some of the nonsense so there aren't too many pointless plot threads. Not too keen on the "dead" father story. I don't need some season-long mystery of who "killed" him or whatever.
Krause was pretty damn fantastic, though, and really covered for some of the inadequacies of the script with his charisma.

I'm hoping we aren't going to be treated to a weekly dose of the "Are you shitting me?" look from Nicholas when the Darlings (gotta love the name, given the irony) get into trouble and he has to figure out ways of bailing them out, or giving them the advice that doesn't totally offend their sensibilities honed from decades of wealth and entitlement. We are going to have to see some form of personal growth with all of the Darlings, most of which coming through the example that Nicholas sets, even while retaining some human elements of giving into temptation and grey areas. It's a tricky balance to strike in a show like this, but I am hoping for the best.

So far this is one of the better pilots I have seen this fall. I definitely see myself continuing to watch.
Interesting bit of trivia: the actor who played Brian Darling also had a memorable stint on Six Feet Under as the dying guy Nate befriended, so it was cool to see him and Peter Krause back together. I noticed that actor because I also liked him in Flirting With Disaster, one of my favorite films of the 90's.) He played Ben Stiller's sarcastic biological brother and he was hilarious.

I was intrigued just from the first few moments before they started the credits...I thought that was clever. The whole show was good, imo. I liked the issue with the jerk priest who fathered a child and wants him enrolled in a private school, the Baldwin affair, and the Darling matriarch having an affair for 40 yrs with Nick's father....which I think he'll be secretly wondering if his dad is really his dad...or is he a Darling?

I wondered about that too. But then I wondered how she could she hide a pregnancy? But then I thought, maybe one of the Darling kids is isn't a full Darling?

I thought it was very well done and one of the best premieres of the new season.
Neither show is very funny. Oh wait, DSM is a drama.

It was only one episode anyway, it's bound to get better.

I think the creators were totally gunning for a AD drama/comedy. While I will give this a couple of more viewings, it is no where near AD caliber.

I don't think he ever said it was of AD caliber. Just that it reminded him of it, and given the subject matter, it's certainly an accurate statement.
It's funny how people get so protective of their favorite shows.
Frankly, AD didn't impress me until about 5-6 episodes in. I almost pulled the plug on it.
