Tom Hanks to revisit JFK killing in HBO miniseries

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Tom Hanks' production company has joined forces with HBO to turn Vincent Bugliosi's "Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy" into a 10-part miniseries.

In his New York Times best-seller, Bugliosi, who prosecuted Charles Manson and co-wrote "Helter Skelter," disclaims many conspiracy theories and contends that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole party behind the 1963 Kennedy assassination.

"Seventy-five percent of the American public believes in the falsehood that there was a conspiracy in the assassination of President Kennedy, and only 19 percent accept the findings of the Warren Commission that Oswald acted alone," Bugliosi said.

He expressed confidence that Hanks' Playtone Prods. and HBO would help "reverse those numbers and finally bring the truth to the American public."

Playtone has produced such projects for HBO as the drama "Big Love" and the miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon," "Band of Brothers" and the upcoming "John Adams" and "The Pacific."

"Big Love" star Bill Paxton will executive produce with Hanks and Playtone executive Gary Goetzman. As an 8-year-old, Paxton accompanied his father and older brother to an appearance Kennedy made in Paxton's hometown of Fort Worth on November 22, 1963, just hours before his assassination in Dallas. He brought the book to Hanks and Goetzman.

"Based on the facts and evidence that Vincent Bugliosi so masterfully presents, it's a story that has haunted me and my generation our whole lives," Paxton said. "Now, with the 50th anniversaries of President Kennedy's inaugural address and assassination looming in the next few years, we felt it was the right time to pursue this project."

Both John Adams and The Pacific were first talked about more than 5 years ago. I hope it's not 2012 before we see this.

Why? JFK is dead. Get over it. Why don't they make James Garfield assassination movies every 5 years like they do JFK?

(Rant)... Most Americans believe the JFK assassination was a conspiracy because it's nearly always presented that way in crackpot books and action-fiction. It's more interesting to believe. Fiction, repeated enough, has a way of becoming reality in the broad culture.

In another generation, most people will probably think the moon landing was a fake and a conspiracy too. Elvis is still alive, too. People are fucking stupid--and most TV, movies and even books encourage that stupidity these days.

Kudos to Hanks, Paxton and company if they can write a compelling miniseries which helps to debunk all the conspiracy crap. Unfortunately, they may be fighting a losing battle.

10-part miniseries? Parts 2-9 will be Jim Garrison saying "back and to the left...back and to the left...back and to the left..."

Since this will come from beloved Hollywood this may convince some of the more reasonable members of the crowd that looks at Oliver Stone as some sort of historian that sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. That alone would make it a worthwhile project.

I’d personally rather see a 10-part HBO series on ED Gein but if Tom Hanks is going to be involved, It’s a must see for me. Hopefully, like Bill Needle said, they can write a compelling ministry that debunks all of the conspiracy around the JFK assassination.

I don’t have HBO so I’ll have to wait for the DVD if this does come full circle & it’s not a total critical disaster.

Close...it will be 2013, the 50th anniversary of the assassination.

I'm a big fan of Tom Hanks but at the end of the day if this wasn't going to make money, it wouldn't be produced. With that said, I'll add this to the pile of crap from both sides that's constantly being produced on the assasination of JFK.

This has no appeal to me whatsoever.

I think it's really a generational thing. My parents will be glued to the set watching this but they're in their forties. None of my friends are likely to be interested.

Do you work for free? What is wrong with him making money?

I'm 42 and I've seen quite a bit of information on this subject over the years. Personally, I don't think we'll ever know the truth - it's been too long, too much evidence is gone and too many witnesses are gone.

I'd be interested in seeing this, but at the end of the day, it's just someone else's opinion.

This was first announced back in June. See http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?p=7936806 .

Many conspiracy theorists doubted that the series would ever be made. Glad to see it definitely will be.

Can't wait.

Sorry for the bump, but I just heard about this and see on IMDB that it's supposed to come out next year. Is it filming already? I know that seems unlikely with the Pacific coming out in the same time frame, which already has trailers out there.

I can't get enough of the conspiracy stuff, so I'll be all over this. Whether it's true or not,you have to admit that a Cuban/Mafia/CIA/Lyndon Johnson cabal is so much more fun.

I don't believe for a second that Mark Cuban was involved and can't believe anyone would buy into it... did he even have money back then to pull off something like that?
