I don't think it really gets "bad"; certainly not at the level of the last seasons of Buffy. I've always found the show to be overall fairly consistent. I say stick with it to the end.

But none of that means that the show reaches a point where one should simply stop watching altogether. There isn't a series out there that doesn't have off episodes or storylines (or even characters) that are a complete waste of time. Even though I fear the ending will be an incomprehensible mess (along the lines of Neon Genesis Evangelion), it's still worth watching. |
It's still the best Sci-fi on tv and while it dropped a bit in S3 (mainly the stand alone eps) it's still worth buying.

Spoiler:
Nice fucking spoiler for the OP who has only seen a few episodes. I mean, fucking really!!!! Anyhow I DARE you to watch the S2 finale and not buy S3 |

I agree with the 'never' crowd. I count one horrible episode (Black Market) and a couple mediocre ones in the first two years. Season Three had 2-3 mediocre episodes but the rest was some of the best stuff in the series (particularly the first five and last five episodes, which are all balls-to-the-wall awesome).
Anybody complaining about the quality of BSG really doesn't watch much TV! |

I think it hit a wall in S3. The entire tone of the show changed too radically and they took on a decidedly left-wing political slant (interjecting all the obvious jabs at Iraq/the War on Terror/Bush Administration policies, etc.). All that aside, I don't think I was ready for such a major plot shift. I would have liked it better if they had played out the on-the-run, cat & mouse plotline for another season or so - the jump to the new plotline of S3 just felt way too abrupt and left too many things unresolved. Too many characters were suddenly made radically different, and that hurt their individual character developments. For me the slide really began after the Adama/Cain standoff, which got wrapped-up way too quickly and wound up being very anti-climactic. It went downhill from there, culminating in the radical plot shift that was S3. I still like the show, but they really need to do something awesome with the final season to redeem the whole thing.

Season 3 may not be up to par with Season 1 or 2, but its still damn good stuff. I love the Baltar stuff near the end.

Season 3 started with a series of phenomenal that were jaw dropping at times. Quite honestly in my opinion they set the bar too high, there was noway that the rest of the season was going to live up to that. Season 3 also suffered from the network meddeling with the show demanding more stand alone episodes, for example: if I remember correctly, The Woman King episode's plot was supposed to be a long running backstory. I am on the fence about the season finally, it could end up being really great, or IMO the episode where the show died. It all depends on how they do season 4.
Overall I liked season three, and I think it will play out better on DVD, where you don't have to wait so long between episodes. Even the "bad" episodes are still entertaing and are worth watching, and for the most part contribute to the overall character developement of the show. |
This is probably almost a thread crap, but sorry....
We just finished "Heroes", with our jaws on the floor. The entire series made us go "oh my god let's see the next one. Then it was like "now what" - I said - EVERYONE says Battlestar Gallactica is great and I have it - so let's watch it. We started with the Pilot (Starbuck is a woman?) and about the point where Caprica is being destroyed, we yawned and said - boy this is taking a long time isn't it? Maybe we'll finish tomorrow.... We aren't giving up on it, but the Pilot sure seemed drawn out - maybe they wanted to reintroduce everyone.... but after Heroes I guess we were used to fast and tight writing. |

"Galactica" isn't designed to be as fast-paced as "Heroes," although it amazes me how much ground they can cover in just a couple of episodes. I love the much larger scope of "Galactica," and the characters have far greater depth than just about anything else on TV. Some of the things the characters go through during the three seasons are incredible.

Battlestar Galactica never really gets bad, as in "jump the shark" bad, but it does to lag a bit during the middle sections of seasons two and three when they bring out the self-contained episodes.
And they also pulled some "shippy" stuff out during season three that didn't go over well at all with the viewers. |
I guess the herky jerky camerawork of the earlier seasons didn't bother a lot of people, but for me it made it kind of unwatchable. There is a time and place for that sort of thing, and it is not every damn scene, lol. They seemed to stop that in the third season though.

I still believe there was nothing wrong with the storylines they explored, but since they had to do the Trek-style monster/social issue of the week format, they seemed trivialized. Moore has since said the network is pretty hands off for this final season, so here's hoping to a nice long, drawn-out story arc that we'll need a pad of graph paper and a sextant to keep track of :) |
