Show some love for Miami Ink!

Anyone watch this on TLC? Love this show. New season started yesterday. Still kinda bummed that Kat was fired cause she did some amazing portrait tattoos, but at least now we get to see some new talent. The new girl they hired for the first episode was pretty hot. If I ever go down to Miami I'd love to get some work done by these guys.

I used to watch it - I think it's fascinating to see the tattoos people get. I have a few myself, and always like to see the thought process (if any) that other people apply.

but i hadn't watched in a while. just didn't get around to watching them as they piled up on my TiVo. why did Kat get fired?

Because all Kat did was whine about Miami or the shop, wanted to only work on portraits, and was refusing to do other work and Ami got fed up with it.

It's not appointment TV for me, but I have watched quite a few episodes when there is nothing else on.

ok, dek, that was certainly obvious in the episodes i saw from the first 1 or 2 seasons she was on. i guess ami just got tired of it. she did do great portrait work, but that's all she did. didn't really help out the guys with all the other workload.

for those watching recently, how is yoji's work now?

Yoji always has, and probably forever, will do shit work. He should stick to playing guitar. He gave some homeless dude a four leaf clover tattoo and it was horrible. HORRIBLE. I suck at drawing and I know I could bang out something better than he did. He's garbage.

I missed this weeks episode, Can someone tell me if anything really important happened?
I saw the the *Season premiere* last tuesday but this week my recorder didn't record it for some damn reason. I am happy Kat is gone because she was very whiny & Ami did the rite thing by firing her last season.
I liked the new girl from the first episode this season as well but did Ami said he was going to look for other people to replace Kat still so I guess she didn't make the cut.

Did they make mention when Kat's show starts? (L.A. Ink, which they made mention of after the finale when she left).

Some reason my DVR didn't record it. Many shows like this, ghost hunters, food network stuff and some HGTV stuff the wife and I dvr in the bedroom and watch before we crash.

Not much new happened this past episode. They are starting to look for more people to help at the bar. No new prospects for the shop.

As for Kat...I think the last straw for Ami was the attitude she copped with the American Chopper guys. Kat and Chris (I think) were going to go up to the OCC shop to give some of the guys tattoo's and Sr.'s girlfriend wanted an armband of hearts. Kat basically told her that it was beneath her, like a grade school level art. She came off like a real b*tch, and I generally liked her on the show.

But Kat fans will get to see her on LA Ink later this summer.

just wanted to comment that, as whiny/cocky/bitchy as Kat is, i'd bone her in a heartbeat.

Yeah, I was interested in Yoji's work now, just to see if he improved AT ALL, cause he was always bad. I stopped watching regularly when he was finally doing work on customers, so hadn't seen if he had improved recently. I think one of his first was some design on a girl's wrist (or maybe ankle). The girl and her friend wanted the same design. Yoji did one, Ami did the other. and side-by-side, Yoji's was utter shit. It was a small design, not complicated at all. Just basically straight lines.

I think i need to add it back to my TiVo.

I keep wondering how tatoo parlors actually work. They talk about the workload, but don't individutal artist book their own clients? And do Chris and Ami pay the others a salary, a percentage or what? Also, out of curiosity, how much do tatoos cost?

Here is what Kat wrote about her leaving the show via myspace

To all my friends here,

Tonight was a very sad night for me. As some of you may know, tonight was the season finale of Miami Ink, and i had known the time would come for this episode, where I leave Miami Ink, and obviously not the best note.

Regardless, I will never speak badly about some of the cast members that have permanently burned bridges with me, which is the true reason for me DECIDING to leave.

As difficult as it was for me to deal with lots of things on that show, (especially the behind the scenes, that you will never see), I am sincerely appreciative of the chance to represent everything i've worked so hard for, and love with all my heart; TATTOOING.

I just want to thank you guys for all of the amazing emails and support. You guys don't even know how much each email means to me. I know I haven't gotten the chance to email EVERYONE back yet, becasue I'm so behind on the emails, and been super busy building the new tattoo shop for LA Ink. But i promise, even if it takes me a year, i WILL write ya back.

More than anything, did i wish to have ended on different terms, but its hard to shake hands with a fist.

But moving on from a negative time in my life, I have made a promise to my friends, family, and myself, to begin the next part of my life on a positive note.

We are filming the new episodes for L.A. Ink at my new tattoo shop, HIGH VOLTAGE TATTOO in Hollywood, and I cant wait to show you guys the new amazing team of tattooers. hopefully, we can all show tattooing in a good light.

The first episodes will premiere August 7th, and i will definitely keep everyone updated.

From the bottom of my heart, all i wanna do is THANK you guys so much for everything. I'm gonna throw a huge grand opening party, and when i do, everyone will be invited and hopefully i will be able to meet a lot of you.

With Sincere Love,

Kat Von D

They do book their own clients, especially people that they have worked on before, or if someone already knows they want a particular artist (via a friend's recommendation or something). But tattoo shops do a lot of business via walk-ins. Walk-ins don't know who they want to tattoo them. That's the workload that has to be distributed.

Not sure how the guys are paid on miami ink - i know some shops, the guys just get paid for specific work they do. at others, they employ some kind of sharing.

i'll bet Miami Ink charges a good deal for tattoos, just because of their popularity. My tattoos were done in memphis and nashville - the average cost was probably just under $100. lots of things determine cost - the size, the detail / color, etc. mine are all black-work, and probably about medium to large in size. Nowhere near the size of a full back-piece, but about the size of someone's head.

edit to add: artists also probably charge more if they have to draw/design it themselves. I actually had the design/drawing already.

I'd ask Ami to tattoo a Koi fish on me just to see his reaction. If I were to have anyone tattoo me I think it'd be Garver. From what I've seen he does the best work.

I usually catch this show if I'm flipping around the channels. The last I saw, Kat was still whininh about Miami and that the guys wouldn't party with her, Yoji was just about to start tattooing actual people (I think he tattooed one person, a friend maybe).

It sounds like the show has made them all pretty famous and somewhat rich. I'd guess they could hire more than one person to replace Kat.

The one girl they had on to replace Kat was pretty hot, but man she had the most annoying voice in the world... Its so hard now a days to just walk in a shop (especially one thats good) and just get a tattoo anymore. Everything seems to be booked so far in advance anymore and I always end up changing my mind and talking myself out of anymore work.

Basically a tattoo shop is like a beauty salon. Someone owns it, the artists pay rent/a cut of all tattoos done. One of my best friends owns a shop in San Jose and he makes some serious coin, to the tune he just remodeled so he could put 4 more stations in as he is that busy.

The guys from Miami Ink must get some serious coin as well as most times I am out and someone sees the portrait on my arm I get asked if I got it done from Kat or at Miami Ink. Luckily I keep a stack of my friends business cards with me, must have given out about 50 in the past 2 weeks.

Yeah, I still don't quite get why Yoji is there. I know he's an apprentice, but shouldn't he have some kind of actual skill? I guess he's just part of the group now, but I wonder how he gets paid.

I figure if I was ever to get on the show I'd have to get Ami to do a tattoo just because what I want involves snakes & is very detailed (MC Escher drawing). From what I've seen he's done good work when it comes to snakes.
