Love Ed O'Neill in this show. I would keep watching if it was just him rambling to himself. Also, I dig John's quirkiness. However, like das, I was disappointed that they decided to end it there since it was pretty obvious the kid would be fine. I wanted more damnit.

I like the John character. I didn't think they would be able to pull it off if they had to stick to the strict guideline of just having him repeat the last thing that was said to him. Fortunately they didn't go that far and they made it work. John is the personification of karma. What you put into him is what you get back, and what you ask of him he produces from his pockets. Is it likely that someone will notice that every time they ask him for something he gives it to them? Or will the other characters stay so wrapped up in their own lives that they don't notice they can have anything they ask for?Originally Posted by Brian Gentz

I've loved both eps so far.
I'm guessing it will get old after a while, but I crack up every time John talks. Easily amused I suppose.
And Bill is funny as hell to me also.
So a lot of people really don't like this, huh? At least it's on HBO, so we should get a full season.

I don't mind the show at all so far. It isn't the greatest thing I've ever seen, but I am intrigued enough to keep watching it. I think a lot of people are being too hard on it because it isn't Deadwood or the Sopranos. I think pretty much any new drama HBO puts out there for a while is going to face a bit of a backlash out of the gate.
I don't recall being terribly blown away by the early episodes of Carnivale, either, but I kept watching anyway, and it won me over eventually.

Actually, there were quite a few comments in the early season 1 Deadwood threads where people didn't like it because there was too much cursing or it was "Sopranos set in the old west."Originally Posted by SexualPudding

Yes, I remember those too, but I was talking more about how Deadwood met it's demise by HBO and how a lot of people are seemingly refusing to give John From Cincy a chance because they believe that Deadwood essentially got axed for it.
You are right, though, it isn't really just new shows in the post-Sopranos era. I also recall people being apprehensive about Big Love last year, too. I guess a lot of it is just par for the course.

Just watched the first 2 episodes and so far I don't think it's very good, but there is something intriguing about it, I'm just not sure what it is. I think the car wreck analogy is true in this case.

I caught the second episode today...slightly better than the pilot, imo...I hope the weekly improvement continues.

I like the show so far. Can't explain why, but I want to keep watching it. I guess it is kind of quirky. I had tears in my eyes when Jon was smiling at the cardboard cutouts.

Once again, I like a show where I hate the main character. John annoys me to no end. I like the others very much.

John was cracking me up in the bathroom stall, making the noise he overheard but didn't see what causes the noises.
I love how over-the-top everyone is when they are in confrontation mode. It's like Yost DNA lacks the filter mode when it comes to speech/verbal outbursts.

When Mitch was leaving the hospital, they played some opera that sounded like the opening of Everwood. Does anyone know the title of the song?

Love the appearance of Deadwood's "Wilcott" as the Doctor, the guy who plays him is such a great character actor (he also played the guy who shot Wild Bill). Also, just now realized that vietnam joe is Elsworth. By my count, we're up to three in terms of former deadwood players.
