Chevy Chase on Letterman

I like Chevy's work, but I, like most folks, have heard the stories about what an ass he is lately, including that article about Ford that was posted.
I can't help but think that it doesn't have to be this way at all. I don't know what happened in the past that rubbed Chevy so raw that he just 'shut down.'
Only thing I can think of was his talk show failing and how the whole nation seemed to laugh AT him and not WITH him.
When the Ford stuff came around wasn't there SOME way for him to spin it in a friendly way? Come out on top? Memorialize the man while at the same time gently reminding people he had done a lot more than imitate Ford? I mean, he IS an award winning writer, right?
I guess he has all the money and happiness he needs.
Steve Martin could have turned out this way after Pennies From Heaven, or some such. I'm glad he has a decent head on his shoulders

I don't if any of you read "Live From New York", the book about the history of SNL, but for every "era" of the show they ask the cast and crew who the best/worst guests were, and every era mentions what an asshole Chevy Chase was when he came to the show. It's actually pretty funny to hear every era same almost the exact thing every time, except with different stories.

The only thing that is possible is that it was a VERY short interview for someone who is your lead guest and Chevy might have expected more.
But as big of fan of Letterman I am, this has always been a complaint of mine as well. He will often spend very little time with his first guest compared to what I want or what the other talk show hosts do. I have no idea why.
Julia Roberts, Madonna, Bill Murray, Tom Hanks...they get almost the entire show. Which is fine. They're huge stars. But Chevy seemed to have about 8 minutes out there. Very little discussion of the book, but maybe Chevy wanted it that way.
Much ado about nothing in my opinion. This thread would have been much better and more interesting had in been about Amanda Beard getting nude for Playboy.

He seems ok and fairly amusing in the letterman video.
This is an example of a bad Letterman interview. Perhaps the most controversial.

He seems like a nice guy though and althrough I'm not a fan of his Work, he doesn't seem like the kind of person to be a bitter, unfunny asshole & would be the kind of person you would want to be around.

Besides the obvious trifecta of Vacation, Fletch, and Caddyshack, I'm a big fan of European Vacation (although I'm in the minority) and his Goldie Hawn duo (Foul PLay and Seems Like Old Times). From the 90s on, the only thing I liked that he was the star of was Vegas Vacation. And to be honest I liked that one *despite* Chevy. A lot of people say that movie is just going through the motions, but I would argue that is was mainly Chevy's doing. He sucks the life out of many scenes, perhaps trying too hard to be deadpan.

First off let me say I'm a huge fan of Chevy Chase, I love the vacation movies, the Fletch movies, Funny Farm, I even watched The Chevy Chase show for the three weeks it was on.
Now having said that, everything that he's bitter about he brought on himself. He could have been just like Steve Martin, who is still one of the greats at writing, He could have been like Bill Murray who went on to do some amazing non-comedy stuff. Instead he refused to break out and do anything but second rate comedies (Cops and Robbersons, etc.) He may have become famous for his Gerald Ford Schtick but he wasn't pigeon holed or typcast by any means. Hell, you don't see Martin complaining when people mention King Tut.

I was once at a seminar given by film director John Carpenter where he spoke of how demanding the movie business can be when dealing with actors and their sense of being prima donnas sometimes. He didn't name any names, but he said that one experience he had with one almost drove him to quit the business. My guess, judging form what I have read about Chase, is that it was Memoirs of an Invisible Man. FWIW, that kind of was Chase's attempt to break out. Didn't work to say the least, though a decent flick in terms of FX.
I read about the Roast they did on Comedy Central. Anyone have a link to clips? From what I read he had no sense of humor about any of it, which beckons why he would show up in the first place.

I think people often misunderstand his dry, deadpan humor (same goes for Garry Shandling).

I wish the OP would explain what they thought the problem was in more detail, because I didn't see any and Chevy didn't seem like a jerk in this instance.

I think Chevy is getting a raw deal. While Steve Martin gets way too much credit. I think this is visit by Steve Martin on the Late Show was FAR more inappropriate than anything Chevy EVER did.

I thought that was hilarious, personally. But I also love Steve. As an aside, I remember watching an interview of Chevy Chase with Alan King on his program on Comedy Central back in the 90s. Chevy gave a list of reasons as to why he could never be a talk show host, why he would be terrible at it, etc. It surprised me when he finally did it, but he had been absolutely correct.
As for Martin, I remember reading where he took a year off "to find what he enjoyed most" and found that what he spend most of time doing was just writing. I think he is like a Willie Nelson. His stregth is writing, but everyone loves him so much that they demand to see him in action. Big mistake with Willie, imo, but Steve Martin is a genius.

There was some interview with Steve where they asked him if he did something to cause her to trade uniforms. It wasn't a serious interview and was meant to be funny and his response was that he thought it might be his giant c#ck that frightened her into being gay. Wow, I can't even type that word without hearing Norm MacDonald's voice.
It was the perfect answer.
They also discussed this one night on the Late Show, with several bleeps, on a night not long ago when Anne Heche was on.
Steve does his thing to make big bucks by making Cheaper by the Dozen movies, but that also allows him to make wonderful movies out of a, in this case his own, book like Shopgirl.
