Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - What do you think of it?

The Star Trek Next Gen thread made me think of seeing what people thought of DS9... IMO, the most underrated Star Trek series in the franchise history. It addressed real issues without all the sugar coating. The multi-season arc didn't shy away from conflict and had truly multi-dimensional characters... always peeling away that next layer (and this includes the series' baddies). So... what do you guys think about it?

Tie between "somewhere in the middle" and "can't fairly rate". Really good show. Had some great arcs and some average ones, some standout episodes but not too many individual shows that people will talk about for generations, more deep characters but no one as cool as Kirk or Picard, great closing seasons but weak finale. It's a really good show but not appreciably better than its episodic counterparts, just different, and not as strong as its epic cousin, B5. Btw, when I say "somewhere in the middle", that's compared against the only 3 shows that are worth a damn.

In the middle. Frankly, in its initial run, I only watched the first few episodes and became quickly bored with it and gave up. Then after hearing a lot of the glowing remarks in this very forum, I gave it a shot on the Spike reruns and was pleasantly surprised. However, it never felt all that Trek to me, if you know what I mean.

So again, squarely in the middle - behind TOS and TNG, but definitely ahead of VOY and ENT.

The best Trek series for me. The only one I am considering buying on DVD. Great overall story & awesome arcs. Characters were much more 'real' to me since they didn't live on the high morality pedistal that TNG & Voyager characters were on.

I have always maintained the position that if the other Star Treks' mission was "to boldly go where no man's gone before", the folks of DS9 were on a mission "to quietly sit where everybody's been."

I personally rank DS9 at the top of the Star Treks (followed by TNG, then the Original, then Voyager, flanked by Enterprise). I've only seen a handful of eps of the last two, so I really can't judge fairly.

My two favorite characters on TNG were Worf and O'Brien. When I heard they were going to the new series, I was upset... but later fell in love all over again.

Sisko and crew are my favs, and if I had the means, I would buy the entire run on DVD today. The others could wait.

It's not as good as the "other" space station show, but it's definitely the best Trek. It took more chances and was much more cohesive than any of the others, and the characters felt like real people. TNG showed what humanity had become, and DS9 showed the hidden price of that perfection.

I was sort of a Trek fan and was watching TNG when DS9 started. I watched most of the first season and wasn't impressed. I sort of got out of Star Trek and would catch a few episodes of DS9 and the show all of a sudden got really good. I don't know what seasons were the ones that I liked but I'm seriously considering picking these up on DVD, I'm just not sure I can justify the price. From what I've seen it's hands down my favorite Star Trek show.

I grew up on SToS. DS9 was my favorite outside of the orig. Never like TNG, Voyager or Enterprise. They seemed too errrrr fluffy.

DS9 was the first Trek series that I watched right from the beginning. I was hooked right from the first episode. Plus I had a huge crush on Terry Farrell who played Jadzia Dax. I was really pissed when she left the show.

Jadzia really threw a wrench into the fine tuned machine that was that show when she left. I felt each season progressively got better and better and then she left and you could see how the writers had to kind of scramble to get things in order for season 7.

I never really cared much for her replacement until I caught up with the show on DVD and I really saw the writers were able to take that bad situation of Jadzia leaving and turn Ezri into quite a full and interesting character that I actually wanted to see more of. And one of the best episodes of the season (but not the best..that is the Visitor) involved Ezri and I believe it was the episode with the Vulcan trying to kill people with teleporting bullets....I just don't think they could have quite pulled that off with Jadzia.

This was Trek at it's best. And while I can think of annoying characters in several other Star Trek series, I can't think of one solitary annoying character in DS9...I loved them all, even Rom.

I've seen very little of DS9, although one of the few episodes I saw was The Visitor, and it is easily one of the best Star Trek episodes I've ever seen.

My favorite was TNG, the only other I saw most of the episodes for was Enterprise which wasn't that good. I tried to go through DS9 on DVD last year and only made it through the first few eps of season 2 before giving up out of boredom. I know it's supposed to get better a little later with a big arc but oh well.

DS9 is the only Trek for me. The other series (TNG, Voyager) I couldn't care less about but I did see every episode of both. (talk about snooze-fests...)

I've never seen an episode of TOS and don't care to, and saw a couple of Enterprise episodes at first and even that was too many.

DS9. Only DS9.

2nd best after TNG. I've seen the entire run of DS9, but it just doesn't hold the same attraction to watch it over and over again that TNG has for me.

Big fan of DS9...

There were some gems in Season 1 and 2, but to me, Season 3 is where it really kicked into high gear.

The Dominion War was awesome... loved it. I got a little tired of the Gul Dukat storyline that the series followed in the last season, but there was enough good elsewhere to outweigh the not so good.

I liked DS9 the best. Enterprise ended when it just starting to get good. Voyager never was any good.

DS9 I kind of didn't like the start of it but of all the treks it ended the best.

I like long story arcs with compelling, flawed characters who change, so DS9 is the trek for me.

DS9 is my second favorite show of all-time behind the Twilight Zone. For those that think that it's a snoozefest you obviously didn't get past the first season. Watch the season two finale the Jem'Hadar, it's a great preview of things to come. In season four when the Klingons get into the mix and the Dominion arc really starts to heat up it's hard to believe that people don't think that it's the best trek series.

I have to jack the thread and ask ... which TZ. The orig or 1985. (BTW 1985-1989 version was excellent)

I used to call it "Deep Sleep Nine" when it first started because I thought it was rather dull. But I gave it another shot years later after all the praise it was receiving and now I like it a lot and rate it about equal to TNG but below TOS (which has the great Kirk/Spock/McCoy chemistry that all the later series never could really recapture) and far ahead of "Voyager" and "Enterprise".

I watched "Shore Leave" last night, and it was a good reminder of how even the stupidest Star Trek episode is still entertaining because of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.

Hands down my favorite Star Trek.

Loved - O'Brien and Bashir.

Especially loved - Weyoun

Hated - Bjoran episodes, which were usually Bjoring.

Glad to see all the love for DS9. Almost all of the characters had something going for them, with my favorites being O'Brien (most fav) and Bashir. The interplay between them was great. Fantastic multi-season arc with the Dominion War.

For some reason, Paramount didn't seem to promote it like the other Treks... maybe because it strayed too far from Roddenberry's Utopia. I'm sorta glad they didn't attempt a theatrical release... they probably would have screwed it up.

I agree, considering most of the major arcs/themes had been wrapped up, the only thing to do would have been to create something new/tack something on which would have sucked.
