Which TV shows lasted too long?

The Cosby Show...

That and any Shark-jumping kid-adding show you can name.

Ronnie Dobbs 05-25-07 02:08 AM

Married with Children, Arli$$

Count Dooku 05-25-07 02:25 AM

Drive

MechanicalMan 05-25-07 02:56 AM

X Files

Rainet 05-25-07 04:57 AM

I think the Simpsons breaks the record. I can't believe i was in middle school when it came out, and i'm 32 now! That show is going to outlast me! -ohbfrank-

TGM 05-25-07 05:24 AM

Lost

TGM 05-25-07 05:25 AM

Prison Break

Jimmy James 05-25-07 06:25 AM

I think you can argue based on the quality of season 3, Veronica Mars may have been better off getting canned after season 2. I'd also suggest that the year without ASP on Gilmore Girls was one year too many.

Tru Calling lasted about a season too long. The pity there, of course, was that it actually got to the point of executing the premise pretty well within the last 8 episodes or so (the last of the first season and the whole second season).

The UK Coupling should've ended after Season 3.

Without a doubt.....THE X-FILES

Palaver 05-25-07 08:52 AM

Another vote for X-files. Such a great series, but the thing that sticks with me the most about it is how it just limped across the finish line.

maingon 05-25-07 08:53 AM

CSI shows

Charlie Goose 05-25-07 09:04 AM

I think the show should have been cancelled after the first episode. Overrated show Beyond belief. When people call Seinfeld the funniest, greatest show ever I wonder to myself if people have ever watched anything else besides it.
Sorry to go off-topic but good lord why do people find it the funniest show ever? Scrubs, The Larry Sanders show & newsradio-now those are the funniest most brilliant show on TV.

The Simpsons
Law & Order (original)
Roseanne
The Jefferson's

rfduncan 05-25-07 10:10 AM

Oh yeah - how can anyone forget The Facts of Life?!?!?!

It's hard to be objective anymore because nearly every show after Seinfeld has stolen something from it. Whether it is a little joke, an idea, a character, a scene, a particular delivery... it's hard for the original to stand out when it has been copied to death, and you don't even realize what you are watching was done before, and oftentimes better. It was the first of its kind. The original is always better than the copies.

Friends is the biggest offender. I can find something in a majority of episodes that was done before on Seinfeld.

I love Seinfeld, but I think the last season was considerably weaker than the previous ones.

STILL, as the old cliche goes, it was better than most sitcoms on at the time.

For me the show lost something when Larry David left.

agree with x-files.

should have wrapped up at least a season sooner, if not more

it was sad to see such greatness, reduced to those final two episodes.

it was handled in such a casual, rushed way...

for my money the Season Five finale was a good ending.

*edit*, yeah seinfeld too. the last season, to me, was horrrrible. a shadow of its former funny.

TheMovieman 05-25-07 12:05 PM

Another one is Frasier. The last season was good but seasons 8-10 were below average. Seems everything went down once Niles and Daphne got together and the battles with their exes became a focal point for the episodes.

Red Dog 05-25-07 12:06 PM

Pretty much every show lasts too long. The better question is which TV shows didn't last too long.

True.

There aren't many, but I'd say THE PRISONER, NICKELODEON's ROUNDHOUSE, WIZARDS AND WARRIORS, and JOHN DOE.

That's true. Same goes for NYPD: Blue. The final season was one of the best, but the 2-3 leading up to it were some of the worst.

Angel (had another season in it and should have gotten it)
Quantum Leap (ditto)
Arrested Development
Freaks and Geeks

starseed1981 05-25-07 03:45 PM

I couldn't believe "According To Jim" lasted longer than the pilot episode.

TheNightFlier 05-25-07 03:49 PM

ER and The X-Files.

ween 05-25-07 04:09 PM

Mad About You

Never really watched the show too much, but in the few episodes I caught per season you could tell how completely depressing the later episodes became to where it wasn't remotely funny, just sad and irritating.

Remains to be seen, but I am starting to believe 24 already qualifies since this season made me just stop watching it completely around hour 17 or so.

zebop 05-25-07 04:10 PM

Homicide- Without Andre Braugher and Melissa Leo and all of those horrible new characters, the show just dissolved.

ER- It's over--yet they keep reviving it.

Moonlighting- If any show only needed four seasons maybe three and a half...

Frasier- It was nearly a drama during those unfunny later years

Roseanne- Last season awful, last show Dan's dead. Can it get any worse?

Beverly Hills 90210- Pretty much should have ended a few years after Brian Austin Green had facial hair.

The George Lopez Show- Although According to Jim makes this look like Cheers, three seasons is all this ever deserved.

Obviously, The Simpsons. However, the finales gave me a glimmer of hope that they might get some of the form back.
