Haven't they already established that Charlie isn't much of a swimmer. I seem to remember him saying something to Jack about it, maybe in S1? Also in one of Desmond's premonitions he drowns while swimming out to save Claire. Now he can hold his breath 4 minutes and was some sort of junior swimming champion?
Now that I think about it, in tonights flashback at the pool, he's so happy that he's 'swimming', but his Dad is holding him the whole time. Also, he was somewhat evasive when Des asked him about the 4-minute thing.
I can't believe I'm about to write this about an episode of 'Lost' but am I reading too much into it?

Well Desmond does call him on it asks him if he really can hold his breath for that long. Charlie tells him does it really matter (because he is going to die).

Charlie probably wasn't the best pick, but he sees it as his noble way to die.
Of course, none of the things that Desmond sees happening would have happend if Desmond wasn't there, or at least, thats how it seems.

This episode reminded me a little of the S1 episode where it appears that Charlie died. I remember feeling a little sick when they find him hung up and Kate is in tears as Jack tries to revive him. This was a very good episode and it made me appreciate Charlie more.

I thought it was pretty clear as well. Maybe someone can post the conversation.

Random guess withoiut having read any spoilers, but I think the underwater women are the mothers who "died" after childbirth

why do i have the feeling that the show won't go back to the looking glass hatch until next season?
I'd almost rather they just ended the show with Charlie swimming down and revisited this sub-plot next year.

I like how Jack coyly dragged all the star characters into the middle of the jungle to make a big show of blowing up a tree (potentially alerting any Others who might be watching) and then give a big speech when he could have just said, "Let's use the dynamite" in last week's episode. Lots of pre-finale filler in this one, although it's the first time in quite a while where they did something even remotely interesting with Charlie.

also interesting was that Naomi made somewhat of a big deal about Charlie's body being found in the wreckage of Oceanic 815. Makes it seem pretty obvious that it wasn't the random wreckage of another plane or random dead bodies. It would be a little more difficult to fake the death of a celebrity on board the plane.

She didn't say they found a body. A plane crashes in the ocean, and you can pretty well assume the people who were on it are dead.

I heard that next week Hurley will wander into the jungle and find some sunflower seeds, after he eats them - he is able to read everyones minds, and is able to foil the Others plans.

That's nothing. Have you seen Claire's two month old? Kid's almost ready to walk. Time definitely passes differently.

As such they could still swim inside through the moon pool, but then would have to manage to swim to the switch and flip it as the entire station was flooded (according to Ben)--thus it was a suicide mission as no one could do all that and swim back.
If they new it wasn't flooded it would be more feasible for someone to swim in, flip the switch and swim back out.

I think the rest of the station is flooded but the moon pool is protected by airlocks as a necessity. The problem, in my mind, was always going to be the time it took Charlie to get from the moon pool to wherever the switch is.
Assuming Desmond isn't full of shit, I think we'll still see Charlie make that fateful swim even though it appears he's in deep trouble. I only wonder if Desmond saw the women down there in his flash.
