Yes, my wife and I were discussing it after watching, and this is the point on which we're most confident.

Spoiler:
The Looking Glass station most likely serves as the gateway to the "real world", which might mean the island is on a different planet, a different reality, or simply a "Bermuda Triangle" type area. Since no mention has been made about constellations being different, I tend to believe that they're still on Earth, and that the Looking Glass is simply a quicker, more efficient means of transportation. Hell, it could even be that the portal emits some energy field that disrupts other forms of navigation, explaining the plane crashes.

As for the sub, it was not used to get back to the mainland, it was simply used to get to the Looking Glass station. People would be sedated for the quick trip (think Stargate), then placed on the sub to get back to the surface and told that they'd just taken a long trip.

Only a select few make the return trip. Richard. Ethan. They are part of Ben's "inner circle". Ben tells everyone else that the Looking Glass station is flooded so that no one starts asking why they don't go there.

Can't wait for next week's finale!

They should just leave it with the numbers and fate as the reasons the plane crashed.

cuse and lindelof said on the answers show (i'm paraphrasing just a bit):

Spoiler:
when desmond didn't enter the numbers, it sent an EMP that fried the plane's circuitry. But, that sounded weird to me, too, as an EMP that can bring a plane down would certainly wipe out any electronics on the island, and the others said everything worked until the sky turned purple, which was much later. In fact, immediately after the crash, we see patchy with all the working equipment in the flame. Unless the EMP was specifically directed toward the sky?

Spoiler:
I always assumed it was the magnetic force from the station that pulled the plane down for the reasons you just stated.

I don't think what caused the plane crash is much of a spoiler anymore but I'll hide it anyway just in case.

Spoiler:

They made note that when the Swan blew the EMP blast pushed the hatch door upwards into the air, so I'd suggest when Desmond crashed the plane the EMP force either pushed upwards or downwards splitting the plane in half.

Understood and agreed, but that doesn't explain what brought down Eko's brother's plane or the recent helicopter. I think it's pretty clear that the island is away from any standard flight path, so I'm thinking there might be some more consistent reason (as opposed to an event like an EMP) that brings down aircraft passing over the island.

Yea, something is definitely going on with regards to boats and planes unable to sail around, or leave, the island but we don't know for sure if there really was a recent helicopter crash. That whole situation is still unresolved and has to be settled soon.

I personally think all of the events have more to do with the "space time continuum" qoute we heard last night and that the island is not on the same timeline as the outside world.

Lots of pre-finale filler in this one, although it's the first time in quite a while where they did something even remotely interesting with Charlie.

This was great. Then they hurried back to camp because they only have so much time and wire to set the dynamite by the tents.

uh, me...I thought Charlie was played with a quiet understatement that really hit home with me. It killed me with his 5 top life moments. Great episode, looking forward to the finale. Wonder who will be sacrificed. This season was so much better than the previous. Really want to settle with "the others" and go back to the mysteries of the Island.

And none of Charlies moments had anything to do with being famous

Nope. That's not her. Doesn't even make sense to be her.

On a related note. Looking at that picture, am I the only one who thinks the background of the door looks fake? Like a painting? Not like bad FX but like it's supposed to be that way for the scene.

Wow, that's pretty good. The girl Sawyer conned was Joanie from Deadwood. And that looks like her in that pic. But imdb yields no luck.

Just watched this episode or the 2nd time and have 2 ques's (sorry if theyve already been asked)....

-instead of Charlie swimming down to the hatch and flipping the switch, why couldnt they just cut the power line?

-instead of Charlie slapping Desmond in the face with a huge wooden oar and knocking him out, why couldnt Charlie just say "Thanks for offering, Desmond, but I want to flip the switch."????

1) they don't really know what the place does, 2, electrocution much?

2) because its less dramatic, pretty much a non-issue.

I agree with you on #2, but for #1, i don't think that was a power line - just an anchor to land.

well fine, be that way

Really I don't see #2 holding much water either way, it'll be forgotten about as soon as Desmond wakes up.

#1, they really didn't know what it was anyhow, but unless they mention it nobody will ever really know why they didn't go that route, seemed logical that they wouldn't sever it. They ever follow it all the way inland?

I suspect the cable isn't even a power cable at all: it just physically connects the Looking Glass Station to the mainland. All cutting it would achieve is making it harder to find the station.

Nope, that's Lana Parrilla. The woman Sawyer conned was played by Kim Dickens

1) I think the cable is just a stationary cable.

2) That part kind of reminded me of Armageddon, only tons better of course. You know, how both people want to sacrifice themselves for the cause, and so one stops the other from giving his life. Desmond seems like the type that once he gets an idea in his head, there's not much hope in stopping him. Also, I think in a way, it was Charlie's way of finalizing his decision. Once he incapacitated Desmond, that's it...there's nobody else who can pull the switch except for Charlie. It kinda takes away the temptation of backing out and handing the duty off to somebody else.
