You're indicting the whole concept of broadcast marketing. I don't really understand the concept of advertising myself, but it is rather obvious that advertisers and networks think that it somehow works and plan accordingly.

Jimmy James 05-14-07 07:27 PM

Oh, I think advertising is very effective. I just think it's effective on idiots and that's why so many of the really popular shows cater to the lowest common denominator.

Red Dog 05-14-07 07:29 PM

And do you really believe that FNL is the kind of show that would draw in the idiot viewership even with a 'scheduling-for-dummies' timeslot?

I'd say not.

Jimmy James 05-14-07 07:33 PM

If I knew what idiots loved to watch, I'd be making TV shows so I could cash in.

riley_dude 05-14-07 07:43 PM

Bionic Woman
Journeyman and Lipstick Jungle sound good.

DJariya 05-14-07 08:01 PM

Hopefully Lipstick Jungle does well and we won't see a catatonic Audrey Raines again on 24 next season. Jack needs to move on.

innocentfreak 05-14-07 08:42 PM

At the rate of cancellations lately I may be able to shelve one of my Tivos. Its funny my mother now gets pissed at me for buying her a Tivo since she now realizes when shows are canceled since she watches more tv than she used to. She is not going to be happy about Studio 60.

Ronnie Dobbs 05-14-07 08:54 PM

I think Kenneth from 30 Rock should be in charge of programming. "Gold Case" would be awesome.

DJariya 05-14-07 08:55 PM

I just watched the 4 minute Bionic Woman trailer on NBC.com. IMO, it's a definite watch for me this Fall.

The trailer contains many spoilers. I do really like Katee Sackhoff's addition to this show.

I think you just don't realize how brand conscious you are, all because of advertising. Your kidding yourself if you think otherwise. The reason people buy coke instead of Shasta and Sony instead of XyzBrand is because of marketing/advertising.

I'm not very brand loyal and frequently buy generic in the stores, but even I'm not deluded enough to believe that advertising doesn't work on me.

I'll run that by Moon Vest tomorrow and see what he says.

I disagree. I think the average consumer has gotten smarter and the brand loyalties due to advertising are severely less than they were years ago. I would agree brand recognition is higher due to more exposure these days even among people who don't buy the product. Then again it all depends on how you think advertising is working on you and what you think the main goal is for advertising.

Well I'll miss Crossing Jordan & Raines but i wasn't surpised that the 2 shows wern't renewed because they did horrible in the ratings.

Anything with Jerry Seinfeld I refuse to watch. I don't care how many people liked Seinfeld, I think its the most overrated & unfunny, annoying TV sitcom in TV History tied with Friends.

I'm extremly happy Scrubs got renewed for its 7th & final season even if it is only going to be 18 episodes, It's nice to see that NBC gave the show the respect it derseves and give it a good sendoff.
Actually I'm thrilled all 4 comedies got renewed esp. the turning into the next scrubs, 30 Rock. My name is earl had another strong season this year & i hope it continues its Quality in season 3. The Office is the only one of the four i could care less about, It's a bit overrated like Arrested development with critics & viewers.

Glad they will give ER another season even through the Quality isn't there as it used to be, it still deserves another season.

I'm glad they renewed all 3 of the Law & Order's even through CI will be first run on the USA network & the original L&O is just a awful show now and the only reason to still have it on is to try and beat Gunsmoke's record for the longest running crime show cause' the Quality is not there at all anymore.

& finally I will check out all the pilots exept for the one with Seinfeld. I already new Las Vegas was renewed & was happy that is was. James Caan's replacement, Tom Selleck should make for a great new lead role.

So here's my NBC schedule:
MONDAY
Journeyman

Tuesday
the biggest loser
CHUCK
Law & Order: SVU

Wednesday
BIONIC WOMAN
LIFE

Thursday
my name is earl
30 rock
scrubs
ER

Friday
Las Vegas

Saturday
Datline NBC

Sunday (Jan 08')
Dateline NBC
Law & Order
LIPSTICK JUNGLE

Okay, the 9 or 10pm part I understand and no Fridays or Saturdays I understand, but why leave out Sunday? The West Wing thrived on Sundays.

If that's true, then now I'm )(&$*@^$_*(! mad at Sorkin too.

No way. A bit extreme. I don't buy Pepsi because I saw Jimmy Fallon dancing on a car. I buy Pepsi because that is what I have drank for 20 years and will continue to do so. I like it more than coke or the generic crap. I've tried them all. I think you chose the wrong industry for your example. People are very brand loyal and specific about the way their soft drinks taste. Maybe the ads worked on me 20 years ago, but that is a moot point, I picked my side and am not changing because of advertising or lack thereof. I purchase based on taste.

I'm not going to rush out and buy an Xyz Tv after owning multiple Sony TVs. They have served me well and I stick to what I know. Now if these large companies starting putting out shit products THAT is when Joe 'habit' Consumer goes out and tries the Shastas of the world.

what thread is this?

What those ads do is remind you that you want a coke/pepsi to drink. You are right the ads won't change your mind, but they do plant a need for their product.

Probably because NBC has the NFL on Sunday and he didn't want to wait until January for Studio 60 to air.

Ah yes, I forgot about that.

I still hate television.

rfduncan 05-15-07 08:00 AM

So this looks like the final season of Scrubs. May be the same for the struggling Medium since it is now up against Desperate Housewives and Family Guy/American Dad which is what I watch on Sundays. Wednesdays was the best place for it for me. :(

And what's up with all the new "dramedies"? Nothing of their new programming says anything to me except CANCELLED.

Hmm, and I loved Seinfeld and think Scrubs is one of the most annoying shows ever. We agree on Arrested Development though. The Office is great!

DJariya 05-15-07 01:17 PM

Medium has a multi-million dollar syndication deal with Lifetime that will pay NBC/Paramount $2M an episode once it reaches 100 episodes. I believe that was the deciding factor for it's renewal next season.

Ditto. I wish that I could switch Scrubs with 30 Rock so I wouldn't have 30 minutes to kill between The Office and ER. Or even better, I wish that NBC would have canceled Scrubs and replaced it with something decent.

But I think that is the point. If it worked 20 years ago on you and you're still loyal, advertising did its job. Now it has to do its job on all those people 20 years younger than you who are just forming their buying preferences.
