I'm torn. On the one hand, ending it that soon will certainly give them focus and maybe we won't get some of the recent "filler" episodes. On the other, I don't want it to end so soon.

5 Seasons is always a perfect number for me, but hopefully the end on a high note. Its good to see Olmos so enthusiastic for his role and the show.

I'm perfectly ok with this. In fact, I'm kind of relieved by the news. I'm all for well-known end dates ahead of time so that everyone knows exactly what story to tell.

I'm a bit disappointed, but not as sad as I would've been a few years earlier.
BSG had a few weak episodes in the second half of season 2, and even more in season 3. I still love the show, but like others, I didn't care for the strikes and boxing matches. Hopefully like LOST, they can stay strong now that there's and end to work towards.

I think this is perfect. No serialized show that depends of a central goal can keep going forever without losing steam (Lost anyone?). BSG is still mostly terrific, add one more series to tie up all the loose ends and call it a day.
Also, I disagree with most of the "filler episode" comments. I can't think of too many episodes that didin't significantly develop a character or plotline. Even the more tangental episodes generally used specific situations to bring new aspects of the reality of the fleet's situation home. Having all of these different threads makes the atmosphere that much more believable.

I would like it to go for another couple seasons. its sad to see it go. I love this show, the last season had some weak episodes but was still excellent and the third season had some amazing episodes, especially the rescue them off the planet episode
I thought Season 2 was fantastic and so was the first. Sad it doesnt have the viewers. But what other shows does sci-fi have that people actually watch? I though Battlestar Galtatica was the most popular show and probably most expensive as it always is movie quality in its production values (best visual effects in a tv show)

Kudos to the Sci-Fi network and ABC (for Lost) for doing the right thing here and not over extending these shows.

Edit/random musing: Four seasons and a movie. That's about the same size as Farscape.

Agreed, simultaneously sad and good news. I'm sure Ron learned from Voyager's mistake and we'll actually get to see Earth when Galactica gets there. VGR's ending was a massive letdown.

Flight of Battlestar Continues
Battlestar Galactica's search for Earth continues to be an open-ended adventure, executive producer David Eick said.
Contrary to comments by Edward James Olmos (Adm. Adama) at the Saturn Awards on May10, no end has been announced for the award-winning show. Battlestar Galactica is preparing to film its fourth season, one that will include 22 episodes, rather than the previously announced 13.
"For those of you who have been paying attention over the years, this is not the first time Eddie has made an announcement about the possibility of the show's end," chuckled Eick. "I promise you that when [executiuve producer] Ron [Moore] and I make a decision about Galactica's future, we'll let you know."

I think they should finish on the 5 season, give them more room to finish the story of them reaching earth would be better then just ending with the 4th season.

I'd like five, but.....
I'd rather them wrap the show up and go out in style than pull an X-Files. If they've only got enough story for one more season I can live with that.

I think that finding Earth - which sounds like it might happen in Season 4 - will only be the beginning of the end and the beginning of another fight, rather than the end itself. So, right now ending the show in the next season could be rushed, while a fifth season might be too long.
How about two more 13 episode seasons, plus the Pegasus movie? That would be enough.

part of me wonders if it will be back for a 5th...how many times was Sopranos on their "last" season? Or Friends? How could Sci Fi call it the last before they air it and see the ratings? I think it could be a marketing ploy to get waning viewers back and then if they do they will announce how the 4th season did well and they green lighted a 5th.
Well, we will see...

I'm not a huge BSG fan, but knowing that the writers have the intelligence to plan out a story arc and limit themselves to keep the quality high... well I might have to go back and take another look at this show.

I know exactly why Olmos is making those comments...it's called "baiting the hook". He's hoping to boost ratings next season and help everyone involved on the show out...I'm guessing it's a foregone conclusion that if Season 4 has the same ratings as Season 3, Sci-Fi is not going to renew it next time around.
