And she rightfully said that extremists are just as scary no matter what religion they are. How anyone can disagree with that statement or find it controversial is beyond me. Extremist Christians have also done horrible things, and she never once said that all Christians are extremists - but it is interesting that so many mainstream Christians basically lumped themselves in the extremist category by being offended at that statement.

And racial humor? By making fun of the fact that the Danny Devito drunk story made international news? Context is everything, but somehow that gets lost in the translation in the sound-bite era.

I found the Ching-chong comment very offensive. She never correctly apologized. Considering her stance with regards to discrimination towards homosexuals, it was extremely hypocritical. Blasting Kelly Ripa a while back for example.

I liked the things she did on her own show. She was right however when she said she wasn't the 'Queen of Nice' as people had labelled her. And with her stint on The View, it proved it. I like her being outspoken but she often said things on The View without thinking. Rosie just started to become an overbearing big mouth. And yes, I was a casual viewer of this show back in the early days.

Too much attention to this. Can't agree on negotiations. She won't be on the show any longer. Whatever..

She could have said:

Allow me to interject that I suspect she was engaging in a bit of hyperbole for comedic effect --I don't really think they were talking about The View in China.

But she could have made her point by picking any foreign country where you would be surprised to learn that Danny DeVito's drunken appearance on an American TV talk show had been deemed newsworthy.

"Ching-Chong" was the equivalent of "Yada, Yada, Yada" in fake Chinese.

If you're offended by fake Chinese in any form, then I don't know what to tell you, except that you can expect to be offended a lot.
Just like all French people can expect to be offended by Pepe Le Pew cartoons and all fake French accents.
And Scandanavians can be offended by the fake Norwegian on A Prarie Home Companion.
The English can find plenty to be offended by with all the bad impressions of the British that get thrown around on American TV.

Since I for one am Chinese and faced discrimination as a kid, I certainly can say whether something is offensive to my culture. Let's see if she could say something like "The men in Harlem are like "Danny Devito, he be so funny" while eating watermelon and chicken which they paid with their food stamps." Intent? Would she be making a joke or simply being offensive? The point you are missing is that certain minorities are acceptable to offend but others are not. Say something retarded like "ching chong" has no repercussions but say the 'N' word or even hint at black racism (which I don't advocate) and you'll pay. When O'Donnell said that, the audience laughed whether it was out of what they thought was humor or their own sheer ignorance. After the Asian community called her out on it, she offered kind of a half-ass apology.

There is no need to put "ching chong" on some list. It's been around for years. It's demeaning and offensive. Say that to a group of Asian-Americans and see if they think it's funny.

Non-Asian Americans need to be educated about Asian racism that used to be acceptable in mainstream entertainment (See Breakfast At Tiffanys, for example) but which no longer is, just as people have been educated about how black racism is wrong.

Rosie often mimics accents, it is part of her schtick. She has an Irish nanny, and she always speaks in her nanny's thick Irish brogue and never hears any flak for it. She was trying to replicate Chinese for her joke and as someone who doesn't know Chinese, she just used words that "sound" Chinese to a non-native speaker. I don't think she was trying to offend Chinese people.

Languages sound a certain way to people who do not speak the language and certain sounds stick out. If she was pretending to speak Japanese, she could have said "ahhh - sooooo" or something like that, or she could have pretended to speak French by saying "voulez vouz" or something.

I remember long ago Eddie Murphy doing a bit about how diferent languages sounds and he spoke about how Arabic always sounds so harsh. He mentioned ordering a sandwich at a deli and the man who worked there yelled back something like "Ahoken hoken a hoken!" and Eddie was like, "That's ok, I don't want no hocken on my bread."

I am sure English words/sounds sound different to people in other parts of the world.
