The Shield - "The New Guy" - 4/24/07
Thoughts?
A slow but steady episode that serves to set up the next big story, with an amazing breakdown on Vic's part at the end.
Dutch is on the road to snapping.
Tina? Yeah, it's looking more and more like she's a former porn actress that is giving some favors to someone higher up.
Julien joining the strike team? I'm all for it if it means we see more of him.
Vic's not going to be happy when he finds out that Claudette's playing him.
I hope someone nails Aceveda's ass to the wall. Benito Martinez is so damned good at playing a sleazy politician.

Wish we got more of Aceveda. He must have a big role to play in the finale - laugh and watch Vic burn.
The ending tonight and possibility of Julien on the Strike Team were pretty unexpected.

I just read on IMDB that the actor playing the new cop is the son of the deceased former lead singer of AC/DC. Poor Dutch one day he will get lucky.

I don't see Julian lasting very long on the strike team.

About halfway through the show, one of my buddies asked if there'd been a contest to let a high school kid write an episode of The Shield. That dialog was so bad we were making fun of it during commercial breaks, something that never happens with this show. Last night was the first time I can ever remember thinking it was sloppily written.
Corrine's dream was horrible. Vic so easily taking Claudette at her word without looking into it any more was uncharacteristically naive. The new cop's lines were terrible, including that 'Imagine me with a puppy dog' turd, that somehow Ronny and Vic found to be hilarious. Shane walking in at exactly that moment and throwing out 'Oooh, everyone's laughing. Too bad that Lem's still dead.' was awful. I'll give the show a pass since it's pretty much hit a home run week after week for over five seasons, but I hope that last night's ep was penned by a new guy that has already been fired from the show.

I fully concur - this episode was barely watchable because the dialog was so piss-poor. Shoving that stupid "dreams mean something!!! likeomfg!!!" shit with Corrine was absolute horrendous. Next thing you know, we'll have Lem's "ghost" walking around haunting Shane. Sorry, that may be ok for some shows but that definitely does not flow well with the general idea of The Shield so I seriously hope that the writers stay away from that angle. I also hope that this episode was a blip on the radar and next week will get back to the good writing that has been fed to viewers for the past 5 seasons.

While I'll agree that the dream thing was a "what the fuck?" moment, I think the rest of the ep was strong. It was different because it wasn't as action-oriented as we're used to... but unlike other shows (coughcoughBattlestarGalacticacoughcough), they were able to use the "down time" to advance other important aspects of the storyline.

I feel it all goes back to now casting a professional actress in the part when they started shooting the pilot. She makes me cringe some times and this was one of those times.
Next week looks like it will be awesome.

I thought outside of a few moments (like the Vic meltdown), this was probably one of the weakest Shield episodes in a long time... however, having already seen next week's, this appears to be an isolated incident, since episode 5 is pretty damn incredible.

That breakdown must've been practice for The Thing role.

I also didn't get Vic's breakdown. Why did THAT kid's death, out of everything, make him break down so badly...I would think that, after killing the guy who he assumed killed Lem, he would be LESS likely to break down.
