Forget sitcoms...if you want bad opening themes, just watch anime.
Probably the worst in recent memory is Berserk. It's an incredibly dark, violent series...but the theme song sounds like the bastard child of Blur and Green Day. Need proof, subtitled in Engrish? Click here. |

I'll agree with the L-word. I recently watched all three seasons on DVD. I LOVED the season 1 opening. Then I put in the first disc of season 2 and thought "what the hell were they thinking". Then somehow the group "Betty" had to start appearing in every episode. Ugh.
I've got to disagree strongly with Weeds. I love that song and think it fits the show perfectly. I bought the soundtrack for that song alone (although every other track turned out to be great too). And to say the Gilmore Girls theme is bad is insane. I'll add one that hasn't been mentioned yet - Dark Angel. It might not be the worst, but it's completely forgetable. I watched every episode of Dark Angel as it aired, then recently watched it again on DVD. The first time I heard the theme song upon rewatching it I thought "Really, is that what they used for the theme song?" I had completely blocked it out of my mind. Just random beats and "woo woo woo" samples. This was made worse in the second season when they started putting a voiceover on top of the theme to explain the premise of the show to us in case we hadn't been paying attention. But thankfully they didn't use the full version of the song with Chuck D's vocals on the tv show. |

copying my own comment from the "annoying" thread -
Three's Company - I hated the show anyway, but I think the theme song had a lot to do with it. |
I hate that scream that starts the opening to Cold Case. I always try and hit my remote before that starts.
The opening theme music to Without a Trace isn't bad, but I hate how they slow it down and play that same piano theme during any "dramatic" moment in the show. "Doo-doo, doo-doo, duh duh duh duh-duh..." |
My vote:
Tick tock, alarm clock, I'm gonna be late, Porridge, toast, kids, car, bloody school gate. Factory floor, what a chore, another week's graft, And fifty times a day I hear "You havin' a laugh?" Whatever happened to my dreams, is this the life I chose? The highlight of my ruddy day is when the whistle blows! |

"Doo-doo, doo-doo, duh duh duh duh-duh..." I like the opening of trace but they really got to stop using that "Doo-doo, doo-doo, duh duh duh duh-duh..." thing because they always disapear when that music comes on, maybe if they stopped playing it they wouldn't disapear? I like the Quantum Leap theme but they tried to "jazz" it up or something for season 5 and it sounds awful.

"Frasier" closing them has been mentioned and thanks to Net porn, I giggle everyting I hear it.
Hey baby, I hear the blues a-callin'. Tossed salad and scrambled eggs Oh My! Mercy! (alt: Quite stylish.) And maybe I seem a bit confused, yeah maybe, but I got you pegged! Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha! But I don’t know what to do with those tossed salads and scrambled eggs. They’re callin’ again. |
Any theme song written by Allan Thicke ("Facts of Life") is automatically bad.
An oldie but a baddie: the "Alice" theme. Probably because I can't stand to even look at Linda Lavin, much less hear her croak out a tune. Basically I pretty much can't stand any huggy feel-good theme song, that sings about standing tall, striving for something better or living up to your dreams. Hurl. Gotta second the "Law & Order" theme. That oboe or clarinet part in the middle sounds like a random collection of attonal, anti-rhythmic notes to my ears. Dropping a box of cymbals down the stairs would produce a more pleasing composition. I've always disliked the "X-Files" theme. Blashphemy, I know, but... what the hell is it? You're watching the teaser of an episode where hideous inbred mutants are burying a baby alive in their front yard during a storm, then they cut to the opening credits feathring a theme song that sounds like an army of 1950s gas station attendants whistling while marching down main street. I just don't get it. Is it supposed to sound spooky? If so, then it fails. Miserably. |
I'll throw out another one:
The "new" Unsolved Mysteries theme music The original was classic! It put you in that ready to be creeped out mood for the show. The new music sucks ass! I've heard that the DVDs contain the new music as well, otherwise I would have picked them up already. |
