R.I.P.: Larry "Bud" Melman

Sad news for Letterman fans. You never quite knew what was going to happen when Larry made an appearance. No more Toast on a Stick!

More info (plus a classic Larry "Bud" clip) here:

So far, there has been no legitimate news on his death. Still poking around the 'net though.

R.I.P.

I'll never forget him - moreso on Late Night-NBC-Letterman. Hysterical.

It's too bad that there's no more new Letterman for the rest of the week (Wednesday's episode was shot on Monday, and the other nights this week are all preempted by NCAA). Hopefully they'll be some sort of tribute when the show returns.

I was watching Letterman a lot back in the early 80s, so remember the beginnings of his character.
I always felt sorry for him, and wondered if he knew he was being mocked.

Was he the inspiration for Hans Moleman on the Simpsons? I always assumed so. At least the name.

When's the last time he was on Letterman?

I think NBC wouldn't let him appear on CBS... something about them owning the character he played. (??)

He appeared on the Late Show, but he was always called Calvert (NBC owned the name "Larry 'Bud' Melman").

Dave actually did a "tribute" to him his first year on the Late Show, at the end of which Calvert came out and yelled "I'm not dead, you bastard!" Hence, my first post.

Ah, man... RIP funny guy. Early Letterman with Larry was some of the funniest television I've ever seen. I'd love to see a rerun when he filled in for David as host one night. Great stuff (certainly was more funny than Adam last night).

AP - Calvert DeForest, the white-haired, bespectacled nebbish who gained cult status as the oddball Larry "Bud" Melman on David Letterman's late night television shows, has died after a long illness. The Brooklyn-born DeForest, who was 85, died Monday at a hospital on Long Island, Letterman's "Late Show" announced Wednesday.

Had no idea he was still alive.

Thanks for clearing that up.. I knew there some kind of dispute about him.
