Here's a discussion that's been going on for two years in International Talk:

Fawlty Towers and The Office are all you really need to see. They are the complete opposites of each other, one is very manic while the other is subtle, but both are hilarious.
|
Tops on my list would be, "Knowing me, Knowing You", "I'm Alan Partridge", and "Spaced" If you like the style of humor, they are about as perfect a comedy show can get.
If you liked "Red Dwarf" you should like "Hyperdrive." "Bottom" (esp, IMO, the last two seasons) is great."Black Books. League of Gentlemen. Look Around You. Saxondale, Fawlty Towers, Nighty Night." All good, black humored stuff. |
No love for Chef? :(
http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/guide/images/400/chef_2.jpg I believe the entire first two season of [/i]Coupling[/i] are on Netflix's "Watch Now" service. I wasn't going to watch them, but after this thread I may have to check them out. |

The Book Club
The Brittas Empire Citizen Smith Reginald Perrin Hancocks Half Hour Paul Merton In Galton And Simpsons... Men Behaving Badly Phoenix Nights One Foot In The Grave Open All Hours The Thin Blue Line 2.4 Children Waiting For God The Young Ones Only Fools And Horses (popular here but I'm not a fan at all, but worth checking out if you're looking into UK sitcoms) Love Thy Neighbour And while it's not sitcom if you can try checking out the UK version of Who's Line Is It Anyway (when they had Paul Merton and Tony Slattery on it alot), Have I Got News For You, The Dave Allen Show and any of the Vic Reeves + Bob Mortimer shows! Oh yeah, and the UK has some great stand-up comic shows. |
"The Vicar of Dibley"(Dawn French of "French & Saunders") I only saw it once and but was very funny.
For classic 70's Britcoms try "Good Neighbors" and "To the Manor Born". 80's... "Three Up, Two Down" |

As a Brit who now resides here I'd definitely go with 'Father Ted, 'Blackadder', 'Fawlty Towers', 'The Young Ones' & 'Bottom'.
If ou were interested in picking up some as a blind buy then I would recommend heading over to the DVD club section of the site and chekcing out the 'TV on DVD' thread which gives you a code where you can essentially get 2 sets for $9.95 and then buy 2 more titles within a year (which also include regular movies). They have 'Father Ted' and 'Blackadder' over thereand have a section dedicated to Britcoms with 15 or so titles. |
The first two seasons (two?) of Chef were great. Then the next one was just weird. Different music. Different family situation. Different cooks in the kitchen.
Father Ted is a can not miss! Vicar of Dibley is also awesome. Black Adder is a classic I like those because in TV terms they are short and self contained. I love 'Allo 'Allo but it is very long. Don't start it unless you are ready for that kind of thing. Same thing with Red Dwarf. Open All Hours is good (I always thought the curvy nurse across the street was kinda hot). Only Fools and Horses is good, Del boy! I can not stand Keeping Up Appearances. A show about an annoying woman...is annoying! I hate The Brittas Empire and The Royale Family. |

Looks like Fox is creating an American version of this starring Kirstie Alley. |
................wow.
Will I at least check it out? No..no..no..no...yes. |
Goodnight Sweetheart is one I noticed missing from several lists above. A superb show, and I am a HUGE fan of Brit TV and own many of the series already recommended, and I would recommend Goodnight Sweetheart in a heartbeat to anybody interested in Britcoms.
Right now it's only available in region two but if you are going to get into British comedies, you have to get a region free DVD player. |

Funny sketches my favorite was he play a schoolteacher doing a rollcall and the student name were body parts or vulgar names. Spoiler:

Fawlty Towers is one of the greatest SitComs in History, if you have not watched the entire series run of 12 eps, you are doing yourself a disservice.
|
Another good one no one has mentioned is The Good Life (called Good Neighbors in America). It's a 70s sitcom I used to watch on reruns when I lived in England.

I mentioned it above. They still play it on one of the PBS stations here in So Cal. I saw it a few weeks ago. |

robo, if you have the means, download
Bonkers, its a new series, and is up to episode 5 now, I think based on your little list you'd get a kick out of it. |
I'll join the others in giving huge props to Spaced. I had heard a lot about the show the last couple of years, but it wasn't until recently that I bought it and started watching. Though I haven't watched the second series, I'm already counting it as one of my all-time favorite shows, just based on the first series.
I'm also a big Absolutely Fabulous fan. I can still watch it and laugh hysterically. I bought some other British comedies recently (Jam, Brass Eye and The Day Today) but haven't had a chance to watch them yet. I'll let you know what I think of them after I watch a few episodes. |
