Rome - "Son of Hades" -1/21/07

"Son of Hades"
Spoiler:
Cleopatra arrives in Rome to pay her respects to Caesar--and to attempt to get her young son legitimized. The Egyptian Queen's arrival intrigues Mark Antony and rankles Atia, who barely tolerates her new rival and Servilia during a fete. Called off a grisly mission at the last minute, Timon returns home to find his brother Levi has unexpectedly arrived from Jerusalem, his disdain for all things Roman intact. Meanwhile, Erastes' death has plunged the Aventine Collegium, and Rome's river commerce, into chaos. In an effort to restore order, Mark Antony orders Vorenus to assume Erastes' captaincy, and he and Pullo bully the warring gangs into an uneasy truce. Frustrated by Mark Antony in his attempt to secure his inheritance, Octavian takes out a loan to pay off Caesar's promise to the people, angering his mother and especially Mark Antony, who refuses the boy's offer of a power-sharing strategic alliance. The confrontation leads to Octavian leaving Rome.

holy shit Im in awe... this show is so awesome! I knew Vorenus' kids would still be alive. I hope they meet up again down the line, but that doesnt look so good.

When that son of hades line was yelled I got the goosebumps. Great ending song too. I hope Beal has some pull that gets the soundtrack released.

Great episode tonight. Octavian gets on my nerves -- glad to see him get a much-deserved whooping from Marc Antony.

I think Octavian is great! I wanted him to kick marc antony's ass soooo much! I kept thinking "You went to fight school, octavian, do something!"

I really enjoyed Cleopatra's return, I didn't catch what Atia whispered to her, did anyone else? I know she said something along the lines of trollop, right?

Great episode, Sunday is officially one of the best nights for television right now.

Man, we know where this season is going, Octavian vs Antony (obviosly), but after that fight they had, it's game time!

I just wonder with Pullo's loyalty to Octavian and Vorenus' loyalty to Antony if they won't end up on opposite sides.

I cheered when Octavian got in that shot to Marc Antony. Good choreographed fight. Another great episode just to make me more sad that the show is not coming back.

"Die screaming you pig spawn trollup"

Antony whispered to Cleopatra about wanting a deep, soulful kiss and then mumbled something at the end.

Good episode

Nice touch to have the flies buzzing around the severed head

It should be interesting to see how Vorenus finds out his family is still alive.

Man, what a great episode. I can't believe this thread isn't on page 3 already.

Quick question, I was distracted by my kids during the last scene and didn't quite get it. Were Vorenus' kids in the cart with Octavian? Or did they show two different groups traveling?

there was disagreement among the group I watched with. I had been under the impression that Octavian was travelling with his slaves, other people thought that he was travelling and the girls happened to be travelling also.

looks like 2 different groups travelling, or at least I'm pretty sure that Octavian was unaware of who was in the wagon.

They may just have been sold into slavery by Erastes or Herastes, however it's spelt.
I love how all the mobsters wore Big Chains around their necks to say hey I'm a mobster!

The season 1 soundtrack comes out on Feb. 20th.

Love this show -- only 8 episodes left though. Oh, the humanity!

Thats awesome news! Im all over that. Of course Im thinking that S2 stuff will be on it too. The Carnivale soundtrack was like (I think) and theres been no other release). I just hope it has the last song that was played in the ep.

The debate on the ending here was that Augustus convoy was wipping the slave convoy to get off the road because they were coming through.

That fight was fantastic. I like both characters but Augustus was trying to be too big a shit and I woulda done the same as Marc.

So its official? The season is only 10 eps? Shit! I was hoping when I heard that it was only for the BBC

Eh...I dunno. Octavian is Caesar's son and by will the rightful heir. Seems more likely Vorenus would follow him instead of Anthony if he knew that.

Is it true that they're changing actors for Octavian. I've read reports that Simon Woods will play an older Octavian. If it's true than I'm saddened to lose the current actor playing the role.

I was flipping through channels and I saw that Rome was on long enough to hear someone yell "I'll suck your cock" and then abruptly changed the channel.

I was shocked they didn't actually have a scene where that happened.

I think we'll have a pretty sizeable jump forward in time coming up, especially if there isn't going to be another season...which is fucking CRIMINAL IMO. I'm grateful we got a season 2 (which has thus far been incredible) but to think that HBO fucked Rome and Deadwood all in the span of a year, makes me so mad I can't stand it.

And really, only 10 eps?! I was counting on the usual 12/13.

Great start to the second season. I do have one question. Doesn't Lucius Vorenus still hold his Senate seat?

Good question. They didn't really address that.

Can someone with some knowledge of Roman history spoilerize and share some info. on what happens with Anthony, Octavian, Attia, Brutus, etc.?

*WARNING in SPOILER with summarized info on what happened to 3 people*

Spoiler:
Octavian changed his name to Augustus to "soft up" the senate's objection when he tried to take Caesar's place. Augustus and Anthony team-up against Brutus and won.

Later on, Augustus turned against Anthony and Cleopatra (they're lover) for sole control of Roman Empire and Augustus won. Augustus embarrassed Cleopatra by parade her in Rome public in chain that lead her suicide. I don't know what happened to Anthony.

Augustus became the most popular Emperor in Rome history.

I might not making sense… you will have to look up in Google that usually have tons of information.

The following presentation contain blah, blah, blah, NUDITY, and blah.

Did I miss the nudity somewhere? I am generally very good about noticing it because it is when people don't have their clothes on.

Close, but not quite:

Spoiler:
Marc Antony fell in love with Cleopatra; the two had twins (and another child) and eventually moved to Alexandria.

Skipping ahead (a LOT of stuff happened between then and what eventually happened), Rome and Augustus eventually declared war on Egypt. At the Battle of Actium, Antony's quickly-assembled navy was crushed by Rome. There were rumors that a) Augustus was going to capture Cleopatra and parade her in chains through the streets of Rome; and b) that because of this, Cleopatra had committed suicide. Neither of these were true (at the time), but Antony believed the stories and committed suicide (seppuku-style) on the battlefield. Cleopatra died a few days later, allegedly by allowing two asps to bite her.

Augustus outlived them both by almost 45 years, dying in Rome of natural causes in 14AD.
