The Year Without a Santa Claus 12/11/06

NBC has taken to remake, in 2 hour live action form, one of my favorite childhood Christmas specials and it airs tonight 9/8.

Spoiler:
When his devious head elf, Sparky (Kattan), tells him that he must "keep up with the times" – no matter how materialistic – Santa Claus (Goodman) resists, fearing that the holiday has become far too commercial. Convinced that no one believes in him anymore and that people have forgotten the real meaning of Christmas, Santa decides to take the year off and not deliver any gifts, much to the dismay of Mrs. Claus (Burke), and his two closest elves, Jingle (Suplee) and Jangle (Griffin). When Santa tells them that he doesn't think there are any children left who still care about the true spirit of Christmas, the two elves decide to prove him wrong.

While Sparky schemes to take over Santa’s job, Jingle and Jangle travel to South Town, U.S.A. to find a young boy trying to recapture the holiday magic by reviving a once-popular Yuletide festival. But their efforts are complicated by Heatmiser (Fierstein) and Snowmiser (McKean), the two feuding sons of Mother Nature (Kane), whose help Jingle and Jangle will need if they want to save Christmas.

Check out this page for the stars and start flipping through the pictures. I would think most fans of the original should start getting horrified at about slide 7 at the latest.

Yep.

The whole "live action remake" of a classic makes me nervous. The cast makes me a lot more nervous. Slide #7 seals the deal.

Holy crap... I won't be watching this.

Completely agree. I thought he was talking about the cast photos at first, and was so horrified by those that I didn't see the slide show down the page until I was already saying "Oh, HELL no!". No way I'm watching this train wreck.

I haven't seen this much full-scale mediocrity in a cast since Stephen King's It.

Consider my childhood brutally raped.

Did they really have to destroy both my memories of this and of Scrooged in the same film? Shame on you, Carol Kane.

I attempted to watch this pile of crap and just couldn't do it. I watched the original right before this came on and it still holds up.

I TiVo'd and went through it, looking for specific scenes this morning. Wow, that was bad. USAToday was right, the famous song went from cute to just plain creepy. I'm going to have to watch the original about a hundred times to get this Heat Miser out of my brain. -shudder-

Also, it's sad when a 30+ year old animated feature has better sets for the Misers than it's modern day remake.

This "movie" was everything that's wrong today with Christmas and Christmas movies.

I got a definite "Muppets Wizard of Oz" vibe from just looking at the stills.

It's almost like they've forgotten how to make quality family entertainment in the past couple of decades. Aside from Pixar's films, there's little I can stomach any more. Even stuff like Dreamworks animation is so stuffed with all kinds of double-entendres and pop culture references that they seem to forget how to entertain.

Yeesh.

Remember back when John Goodman had to be desperately talking into playing Fred Flintstone? He didn't want to be typecast? I didn't ever think he's stoop to playing Santa in such pathetically bad crap as this. Really sad.

WTF?

I just saw in the ratings thread that this aired from 9-11pm. NINE to ELEVEN. I realize that I'm probably being an unrealistic fuddy-duddy here, but... isn't that running a bit late for the target audience? Or is the target audience 20-30 somethings who watch it to deconstruct its post-modern wit?

NBC doesn't air high quality programming like this in the 8 PM hour any more. Don't you remember that announcement?

Wow, I watched this last night. Actually the entire thing. The wife was insistent that it was going to get better, so we stuck with it.

The first 40 minutes were painfully horrible, but it actually somewhat picked up during the last half. Still, overall it was a terrible, terrible Christmas special, and a terrible remake to boot.

My wife wanted me to tape it, so in the interest of sheer masochism, I'm going in!

It's sitting on my TiVo right now. I skipped ahead to see the miser brothers and now I'm not sure I have any interest in watching the rest. It was pretty aweful.
