12/07/06 - My Name is Earl - South Of The Border, Part Uno y Dos

Summaries:

Spoiler:
After Earl accidentally gets Catalina deported, Earl and Randy go on a full-fledged mission to get Catalina back. Earl's fear of flying stalls the process but nothing can stop Randy, a love-struck man, from getting to Catalina. As Earl and Randy get deeper into their plan to save Catalina, the obstacles they face make their mission more and more difficult. Meanwhile, the meds Joy takes calm her temper but the new pleasant Joy frustrates Darnell.

At the end of the first half of Earl and Randy's adventure to bring Catalina back to America, gunmen had kidnapped Earl. While Earl befriends Diego, the fashion challenged criminal who takes him hostage, Randy encounters a married couple that use him to fill a void in their life. Despite whatever hurdles they encounter, nothing can keep Earl from scratching Catalina off his list or Randy from getting the love of his life back. Meanwhile, Darnell finds it difficult to cope with Joy's new happy attitude as their neighbors become more and more invasive.

Wow. That's the longest episode description I've ever read.

Am I alone in not getting how Catalina being deported is Earl's fault? Sure, he could have paid more attention to her and less to the mountains of money he was winning, but she's aware of her own situation - if she was gonna be late for work, it was her own fault. Not to mention, speeding while being an undocumented alien; not smart. She got deported because of her own errors of judgment, not Earl's.

I'm glad this is going to air tonight. I thought after last week that Catalina's fate was going to be the mid-season cliff-hanger (for some reason I thought it was a Christmas episode, likely to be the last until January but I guess I imagined that).

DOes that mean theres no office?

I wish Catalina would stay gone. She was alright in S1, now shes just stupid and annoying. Why cant she talk either? She has a lisp now and slurs her speech. Did she have a stroke?

My guess is that the actress has just gotten lazy with the accent.

Sounds like a winner, although Randy's love will probably still be unrequited.
And I can't see Joy's pleasantness lasting long, even with meds.

TIVO WARNING.....my Tivo had 2 "Earls" scheduled for tonight - 1 from 7-8, the other from 7:30-8. So Smallville wasn't going to be recorded. I think initially they had this scheduled as 2 1/2 hour eps.

Jaime Pressly being good in a role is still hard to buy.

That said, Joy on happy pills = greatness.

Who was the old guy that played Earl's pediatrician? I recognized him from some old show but couldn't quite place it.

That was William Schallert who was Patty Duke's dad on The Patty Duke Show.

Not sure if that's where I was originally thinking of him from, but he's got such a huge resume I can't even tell now.

Was he a pharmacist in something?

This episode (these episodes?) was (were?) great.

I loved the village version of Earl and Randy...kidnapping the friend's mother to force her to smoke until she died.

Joy going off on the people while hopped up on nice pills was also outstanding.

That was a great callback to the episode where Earl kidnaps his friend's mother and ties her to the chair to force her to quit smoking.

I also loved the guy playing "Time After Time" in Spanish after Randy got his heart broken.

Crabman was great this ep. the way the normally calm Crabman started to unravel when Joy became nice was hilarious.

a couple of (geeky) nitpicks: a) since when does it take just a couple of hours to get a passport?
b) I didn't know everyone in Mexico speaks english.

She's turning into a female version of Randy. This show seems to think idiocy = hilarity. Whatever, just give Catalina less dialogue and more time in stripper gear.

Great, great episode. Quite a few laugh-out-loud moments from me tonight including Darnell's turtle on Joy's pills,"Bugle Boy Jeans" and Randy wanting to throw the dead son back up.

Season 2 DVD is a lock for me to own just for this episode alone.
