Well obviously your going to have to catch up with DVD and re-runs. The show returns next April for it's final 10 episodes.
I don't watch SG-1, but I do enjoy Atlantis and I think there is alot of action and humor in the show.

There really are not all that many similarities between the two. For me Stargate is kind of a mixed bag of good and bad. There are some very solid episodes and story lines mixed in with a little humor at times (sometimes some painfully campy humor as well), but you have to sit through some of the mediocre ones. Overall I think it is worthwhile.
Something like Farscape may be more of what you are looking for.

Stargate definitely has humor. Although it is more of an old fashioned sci-fi adventure show than Firefly is.
In Stargate, the American military find a stargate portal that lets them travel to other planets. This is set in modern times - it is not set in the future like Firefly is.
There is also Stargate - Atlantis, in which the stargate personnel set up a special base on another planet called Atlantis.
I would recommend that you try Stargate, although season one isn't the best. You might want to jump into a later season. And generally, the production values and special effects are not quite as good as Firefly's.
Also, if you love Firefly, you might want to check out Buffy and Angel, both produced by Josh Whedon, and Wonderfalls, which was produced by Tim Minear, who worked on Firefly.
Buffy was a hard sell for me (a cheerleader girl who fights vampires?), but once I got into it I loved it. Although, most people feel that seasons 1-3 are the best, and the show was pretty bad by season 6.
You might also want to try Battlestar Galactica, which is darker than Firefly, but it is really good. Also, Farscape, which has a lot of humor.

Although be warned, if you start at the beginning, the very first episode of Season One (the pilot, I believe) has some nudity action goin' on.

I often wished Stargate had been around when I was that age - I would have loved it when I was around nine. I have a mad crush on Col. Carter. If I had seen the show when I was nine she would be right up there with Lynda Carter and Jaclyn Smith on my list of childhood crushes (plus the girl from Buck Rogers....mmmm...Erin Grey...mmmm)

The programs really have nothing in common, except that they are science fiction. Between the two, I believe Firefly is the better program. However, I consider SG1 "light" sci-fi in the vein of ST:TNG....
