"Heeere's Johnny!" is top U.S. TV catchphrase

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061206/...tchphrase_dc_2

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Heeere's Johnny!" -- the introduction for U.S. talk-show host Johnny Carson for 30 years -- has been ranked the most memorable TV catchphrase in a Top 100 list covering 60 years of American television shows, cartoons, commercials and quotes from news programs.

Neil Armstrong's famous "One small step for man ... " comment when stepping on the moon on July 20, 1969, took second place in the list compiled by TV Land, while millionaire businessman-turned-TV star Donald Trump came in third with his curt "You're fired!" ousting of contestants from the TV show "The Apprentice."

The list, which features catchphrases and one-liners from 10 commercials and 28 comedies ranging from Alka Seltzer to "Star Trek" and "The Simpsons" will be presented in a five-night TV Land special starting on Monday.

It also includes moments from televised events such as the 1969 moon landing and President John F. Kennedy's 1961 inaugural address. Kennedy's line "Ask not what your country can do for you ..." came in fifth place.

"We have found that television is such a huge part of baby boomers' DNA that it makes sense that so much of America's pop culture jargon comes from TV," said Larry W. Jones, president of TV Land. The list was complied by TV Land producers and editors.

Carson became a household name as host of "The Tonight Show" from 1962 to 1992 and was introduced by sidekick Ed McMahon to the studio audience and the nation with the rallying call "Heeere's Johnny!"

Trump's "You're fired" in no way should be #3.

Exactly! It hasn't been around long enough to be. No one is going to be saying that in 5 years or so.

Mixing historical quotes with commercial catchlines with quotes from tv shows seems to be three different lists.

#2 -- "One small step for man ..." (Neil Armstrong)

When he said that, you always knew he was about to trip over that damn ottoman again.

And only 1 Simpsons quote? You could probably make a list of 100 Simpsons catch phrases that would be better than this list.

And it was Fat Albert who said "Hey hey hey!"

All lists are dumb.

But this was always my favorite. Cracks me up every time I hear it.

Trump is way too high (shouldn't be in the top 50).

Walter Cronkite is way too low (should be in the top 10).

Once again, a list created by people under 30 (I'm guessing).

Actually four lists if you consider that the tv show quotes seem to be a mixture of classically famous lines that aren't necessarily used as catchphrases anymore (4,9) and more recent lines that actually are used as catchphrases (3,7).

Of everything on that list, I easily use "D'oh!" the most, as I probably use that at least once a day.

And as far as current shows go, "Denny Crane" makes the list, but not "Hug it out" or "There's not enough time!"? Or even "Giggity"? I've actually heard people use that one in real life.

Oh they'll be saying it, only it won't be as a "catchphrase" (just as it was long before the show started).

Really? I've never thought of the Simpsons pumping out memorable catch phrases(to hit the mainstream) outside of the intial couple of seasons(Eat my shorts).

Now if you said Seinfeld that would be different. They seemed to churn out a dozen+ a year. Good to see a couple Seinfeld ones. Should bug all the haters on this forum.

No wrestling catchphrases? Then what made Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock famous?

I love how they got to use the words "hey hey hey" as 2 different catch phrases...Brilliant! It must be comedy gold, I think someone on the Office should start saying HEY hey hey.

Funny, I think Fox Mulder may have said "The Truth Is Out There" ONCE in 7 seasons of X-FILES. And it was something like "The Truth? It's Out There, Scully..." or something along those lines. It may be the only one on this list that wasn't SAID over and over by the person in question (of course, it was the tagline on the majority of opening credit sequences).

The reason is the show hasn't been in syndication as far as I know, in the last 10 years or so. Maybe it is on TVLand?
