Alias worth a blind buy?
I've been pondering buying the show for awhile now, but unfortunantly I haven't seen a single episode. I do watch Prison Break, Lost, and The Shield. Would anyone reccomend me trying this out considering the shows I like?

I highly enjoyed the first season, the second was good too. The third started great and was good, but I was not at all interested in going beyond that. I bought the first three seasons blindly. I have never seen beyond that, so I don't know if it stayed good or not. The show is a girly 24-lite-ish type show, if that makes sense.

On the whole, "Alias" was a great series. The 4th and 5th seasons kinda bring down the average of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
As a fan, I was dissapointed the last episode and how things wrapped up, but there were many people who were fine with it.
I can say that the journey is greater than the destination. And it's a great journey.

Its one of those cases where, if you have the cash, go for it all. 1 and 2 are great seasons (as most here say) I didn't think season 3 was half as bad as everyone says it is. Didn't care for season 4, and season 5 tries to go back to the original roots of the show.

As someone who was in your shoes, I wouldn't recommend it as a blind buy. Not that it's a bad show, but it's a mixed bag that may not appeal to everyone.
I picked up seasons 1 & 2 as a blind buy a couple of months ago. I had just burned thru 24 Seasons 1-4 over the course of a couple of months and was looking for a show to tide me over until Season 5 dropped. I'm about 2/3 thru the second season now. It didn't hook me as quickly as others but because of the show format I did get sucked into a few marathon sessions. This is one of those shows that is great to watch on DVD because the majority of episodes end on a classical cliffhanger moment.
The show itself is a spy melodrama, not as action packed as 24 or Prison Break and not as gritty as The Shield. It will have a good fight/shooting scene once or twice per episode, but it's more about James Bond type spying. Although even that takes a back seat to Sydney's personal life/feelings. The melodrama is laid on a bit too thick for my tastes because the characters are pretty shallow the result is like a bad soap opera.
Overall it is a mashup of Guiding Light, The Living Daylights and Fashion TV. The spy missions are mostly just shallow setups for some kind of personal conflict for Sydney, action scenes and/or Jennifer Garner dressing up. If I cared about any of the characters it could really work well. The balance is a bit off for me, but I can see it appealing to others. So I say dip your toes first.

It's not worth a blind buy, but you might like the show, since a lot of people do. Here's my problem with it - the show is built on an absolutely ludicrous premise (an observation, not a criticism), and half the time plays it straight, and the other half of the time is tongue-in-cheek. For me, it's a little unsettling.

If you are looking for a realistic spy drama that pays attention to details of espionage with out sacraficing realism too much, or having ridiculous stories and logic gaps or fantastical elements than I would say no. I would recomend a Brittish TV Show called MI-5 which is just an amazing show with top notch production.

However, if you are looking for a more "popcorn" type of entertainment, where these things won't bug you that much then yeah, Alias is a fun entertaining show, which can be highly addictive. Especially the first season.
I quit after the third season though, because it just got to ridiculous for my tastes.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to try them out first somehow, and decide if I want to buy it from there. Otherwise, I'm just going to save my money for now. I need to buy a new phone anyways (stupid ESPN mobile.

I'd say the first two seasons are definitely worth buying and maybe the whole series if money isn't an issue. I thought seasons 1 and 2 were phenomenal, 3 was a huge drop in quality, 4 struggled to catch up but worked well occasionally, and 5 was excellent.

). Since I enjoyed that I got S1 & S2 from the DDD sale and eventually S3 so I could be caught up to watch it OTA S4 (after banking the 1st half of the season on my Tivo! LOL!).When I watched the pilot on TV originally, I had zero interest in it. If you get through the middle of the second DVD and still don't like it, move on. But be warned, the show "reboots" many times in five seasons - changing all the alliances, settings and how we see each character. While I agree S4 was a let down, the show wraps nicely. After renting S1 (and possibly S2 - which you may be DYING to watch after the S1 closer), you may want to consider the series box set since the season sets packaging is very inconsistent.

Tough call, because the seasons aren't consistent.
In my opinion, the first two seasons are fantastic. Then it has a MAJOR drop in quality that it never really recovers from (that, after one of the best cliffhangers in TV history at the end of Season 2). Random episodes in Seasons 3-5 are watchable, but the show doesn't ever recapture what was so great about the first two years.
That being said, I grabbed the complete collection on DVD.
Cool, compact packaging and a limit of 40,000 did me in... but most of my repeat viewing will be the first two seasons.

I am probably one of the biggest buff/angel fans around, and while I enjoyed ALIAS very much (even through the 'not as good seasons') but not as much as I enjoyed BUFFY.
ALIAS reminds me a lot like a female James Bond series for the first couples of years - just one with an ever farther-fetched promise. The show is highly entertaining/enjoyable - but like many have said its definately popcorn entertainment over serious drama.
