Oh, yeah, the sketches aren't all that funny, but everything else was firing on all cylinders, so I forgive the sketches being so-so.

The only reason for this show to be an hour long or to employ such an extensive fake show cast is for them to show us something funny each week. I'm starting to agree with those who wondered why this wasn't a half hour show. It might actually work better with less time and NO effort to ever show us the show they're making.

Yeah, I'd say that's about right. How much does it cost, though? I'd submit that they have to fill a whole hour to justify the budget for it. Without that cost, you get a tighter show that hits mostly the same plot points. That's just my sense of it.

I actually thought the Nancy Grace thing was pretty funny, so hooray! Real comedy on Studio 60! I also thought Matt nailed it in his description of the baby sketch -- that it was close to funny, or whatever he said.

I liked the scene with DL's character letting lose all the secrets with the live mic.

Decent episode not great though. The most tiring part for me is Matt/Harrietts "relationship" the most boring part of the show. YES I get they still have feelings for eachother, do I have to keep seeing/hearing about it week after week after week. That shit is annoying. But since America loves there drama, I guess we will continue to put up with it.

The Nic Cage thing was funny.
Lobster was good.

IMO this show doesn't seem to have much depth, the character developement is going ok, but the depth is lacking. I will keep with it a little longer though

I'll just say that I loved this show and love everyone on it. I could care less that the sketches arn't hillarious, thats not the point of the show.

This thread reminds me of why I stop reading TV Talk here after about 2 or 3 months into the new season. The majority of people here expect every single show to be perfect, and generally pick them to death to the point where I start enjoying a show less and less not because of the show, but because of all the complaints about the show here. *shrug*

It seems to me that if Aaron Sorkin has a few months to write the sketches, he does a good job (musical number in the second episode). Otherwise, yikes. They really need to show less of them. Unless this is part of some grand plan and they're showing the worst sketches deliberately.

The last song was "Fields of Gold". Not sure of the first song's title. The instrument was a lute.

Is this show taking place 3-4 years ago? Has Sorkin been watching any network TV the last few years? There is no way (I hope) a show like "Search and Destroy" would be a hot property today. There are so many current and juicier targets (the FCC, for example) in the TV business that could be focused on, that it's a letdown to see a show with this much talent behind it attack such an overused, easy, and dated topic like reality TV.

The "Nations" subplot (the Sorkin-esque writer with the show he wanted on HBO) could have set up an interesting Cable TV vs. network TV debate. Maybe we haven't heard the last of it, but it seems like a wasted opportunity right now.

To me it isn't even so much that the skits aren't funny, it's that the show is almost pompous in its insistence that they are. Several posts here have argued "But it's supposed to representative of SNL and that's not funny, etc.", but SNL in reality has far from the glowing overall praise that the 'Studio 60' in-show is getting. If they were intentionally attempting to represent the skits as sub-par, why hasn't there been any 'this show isn't funny' backlash shown? They make it seem like the only people who don't love their show-within-a-show are either offended conservatives or just too stupid or classless to 'get' the jokes.

I have to agree here. To me there is are multiple levels of "suspension of disbelief". Even within a sci-fi/fantasy/horror movie or show there are different levels. It's like accepting the idea that aliens could invade the earth but still being able to roll your eyes that they are ultimately brought down with a virus uploaded from an iMac.

I know humor is subjective, and I know the jokes aren't "the point" of the show. But shouldn't a show, especially one that is ultimately a real world drama despite its humorous touches, be authentic to real life? If we can take shows like Prison Break or 24 to task for their unrealistic elements, why is this show above criticism?
