That pan shot showed the island is much, much bigger than we believe it to be. She probably didn't want to stray too far from her home base considering her fear.

But in truth, the villiage HAS to be close to the crash sites, since they Ethan and Goodwin arrived there quickly.

Brings up a good question -- why was this ep named "A Tale of Two Cities"?

Palaver 10-05-06 09:17 AM

Here’s my theory on what is happening on the island. It’s only speculation, but I will spoilerize just in case:

Spoiler:
The Hanso group was doing several different types of experiments on the island. These probably included telekenetic/ESP experimentation (on the group now known as the Others), nano-technology research, experiments with the natural magnetic properties of the island, and experiments with different types of animals.

An accident has been alluded to in previous episodes. This accident may have merged some of the experiments into what is now referred to as the “monster”, which is a self-aware nanotechnology swarm with telekinetic powers.

The monster may have reeked havoc with most of the experimental stations, possibly killing most of the Hanso scientists. With its ESP-like abilities, it may have influenced events in the outside world to bring people with certain attributes to the island (aka the Survivors.) It’s possible that most or all of the survivors may have some sort of untapped ESP abilities themselves. These abilities may be hampered by whatever emotional baggage that they all seem to have. The monster might be subtly influencing events on the island to help them lose this baggage and realize their full potential. Possibly hoping use them to eventually leave the island for some type of greater worldwide plan.

The Others are the only group on the island that has any defense against the monster, since they, themselves, have strong ESP-like abilities as well. They are probably voluntarily staying on the island in an attempt to contain the monster and keep it from escaping the island. When the plane crashed, the Others realized (possibly from past crashes/shipwrecks of this type) that they needed to find out which survivors would be helpful in their fight against the monster. It was obvious that Walt had the strongest ESP abilities, so he was the main focus from the front-section of the plane. Walt was too powerful to be controlled by the Others, so they sent him and his dad off the island so the monster couldn’t utilize his abilities.

I think the next few weeks will be a series of tests of Sawyer, Jack, and Kate to see how useful they will be in the fight against the monster which will be the major focus in future seasons.

I’m anxious to hear anybody’s feedback on this theory. It seems to fit everything we’ve seen to this point.

Well "Ben" did tell Ethan (or was it Goodwin) that if he ran he could get there in a day. So the island is huge but if you're there for 16 years and insane I think she would be scouring that island or at least tracked one of them back to the village.

I think we're on the same side here. I'm saying that Ben didn't hesitate to save himself and sacrifice her to the waters above the Hydra. I really don't think he cared whether or not she came out alive.

True True. me and the fiance looked at each other and said "She is going to make a power play, I can just see it coming"

Red Dog 10-05-06 09:27 AM

I wondered about the French lady and the town too.

Great episode, can not wait till next Wednesday, and I hope that my cable company is settled with the ABC affiliate by then and I have my HD back. It was hell watching this for the first time ever in SD, it was like watching it through cheese cloth.

Ben: Goodwin? You see where the tail landed?

Goodwin: Yeah, probably in the water.

Ben: You run, you can make that shore in an hour. Ethan, get up there to that fuselage. There may actually be survivors and you're one of them. [To Goodwin] A passenger, you're in shock. Come up with an adequate story if they ask, stay quiet if they don't. Listen, learn, don't get involved! I want lists in three days. Go.

Other than her wrists - were there any other marks on Kate? The wrists would have come from the cuffs that Ben made her tighten before eating. Perhaps in order to eat she would have had to move around with those tightened cuffs on.
Well, I think that the bruises from the cuff marks was an indication that Kate did try to escape, or at least did not cooperate with Ben (Henry)

Anyone else notice how hungry she was when Sawyer tossed her the rest of the fish biscuit? She obviously didn't partake of of breakfast on the beach...

I just made the assumption that they gave Kate a chance to join in, and when she didn't, in the cage she went...

Anyone catch a glimpse of anyone who could have been "Mr. Friendly" a.k.a. fake-beard guy? I guess I was expecting to see him at some point in the ep...

beatccr 10-05-06 09:36 AM

i thought for sure when juliet said she had info on sarah that jack was going to ask what was the boyfriend's name.

I think it shows that he's realized it doesn't matter. He's moved on (let it go) and more concerned with her happiness.

he was in the episode A LOT. he was the guy with Kate at all times. in the shower area, leading her to the cage, etc. that was Zeke/Mr. Friendly/Fake Beard guy.

and yes, it was definitely ethan fixing the plumbing. you people need to pay closer attention!

Guess I heard it wrong. So if they're only an hours run from the tallies it's completely feasable that Russo would have found there village.

He was in it throughout. He was the one who told Kate to take a shower.

JayDerek 10-05-06 09:43 AM

I'm wondering if that tank near Sawyer's cage has anything to do w/ the 'monster/security system'? Maybe this 'monster' is is how the Hydra Station gets it's name? The producers have said the smoke monster we've seen so far would be considered only part of it...basically like its 'big toe'. Just a random thought.

I really enjoyed the episode. It's been getting a lot of flak around most message boards though. Most people still seem to want every possible answer right now which is pretty ludicrous. We'd have no show then...

And Zeke dropped the line hinting that he might be gay.

They gave Mr. Friendly's real name in the season 2 finale. I don't have my clue notebook with me right now, but I'm pretty sure it was "Tom".

What happened to Mrs. Clue?

Not necessarily, could be that leaked bit of info about the numbers could be correct.

Spoiler:
In short, the numbers represent the Valenzetti Equation: a mathematical formula having to do with the timetable for humanity's extinction.

The show's sinister Dharma Initiative seems to have been an effort by the mysterious Hanso Foundation to ward off that inevitability. When Dharma failed, Hanso's nefarious acting leader, Thomas Mittelwerk, set in motion a plan to release a virus that would kill 30 percent of the world's population.

Well, their experimental island caused the crash. Alerting people would only draw unwanted attention to their "Initiative." I don't think they have a connection to the outside world though... read on...

Great episode. I don't think the Others planned the crash. It just doesn't make logical sense. First Ben's reaction to it is contrary to that belief. Second, Ben had been trying to infiltrate the hatch, probably since the crash. Third, Desmond was in complete shock when he saw his missing numbers caused the crash. They just don't want potentially

I'm not sure if the Others have anything on Jack or the others in thier files. I think it was a stack of plain paper. I'm leaning towards mind reading, which would go right along with Telekenisis. She got the info out of him by reading his mind and that is what Ben was thanking her for, not necessarily "breaking him." Same goes with her knowing he wasn't a repo man. So the next two "unpleasant" weeks to me indicate tests for both "powers" and medical tests to guarantee they aren't

It was bizaare how different they treated each prisoner. And why was Jack taken to the Hydra station? What purpose did that serve? All that did was give Jack more insight into what is going on.

It went fast, I had to rewind it a few times to get that transcript right.

They never did say how long it would take Ethan to get to the beach, but we know it took the Tailies several days and Ethan would be far more comfortable with the island. So I'd say at least a day, maybe 2 before he could have shown up.

No idea if Russo ever found them or not, but she seems easily frightened.

I think I read it in this thread that the cable Sayid found in Season 1 going into the ocean was for this Hydra place. Does that seem to jive with anyone? I don't think he was near Pleasantville/Stepford by then, but there's no reason to think the Hydra is located directly there anyway.

Big Boy Laroux 10-05-06 09:52 AM

i had always assumed that the cable was from an underwater generator (you know, powered by the currrent), that in turn fed power to somewhere on the island.

not sure why no one has yet to follow it all the way inland (sayid was captured by russeau before he could).

so if the others have such a good track on everybody, how do they not know russeau's daugher is living with them and the one who helped claire escape?!
