Not a fan of either show, but at least Courteney Cox is drool-worthy (after the first couple of seasons, anyway). 'Living Single' doesn't have any eye-candy to overcome its writing flaws.

I'm white and I preferred Living Single to Friends. I liked some aspect of all the characters on LS, but of the Friends, I only found the dopey Joey and the flakey Phoebe to be even remotely likeable. Friends was, of course, vastly superior in terms of production, and much of the early and middle writing was very amusing, but it was a cold program, with little in the way of heart or sincerity. On the other hand, I consider Friends the perfect show for an audience of people who never quite "got" Seinfeld.

Fixed. Friends is classic because of its longevity and popularity. It is funny, but nowhere near the level of most of the shows you mention. It was a decent, serviceable show that although broke no new ground did what it did better than most other shows of its kind during that time period.

Couldn't disagree more there. Occassional heart and sincerity is what made Friends stand out to me. It showed heart plenty of times, unlike something like Seinfeld in which everything was always a joke (not that there's anything wrong with that. :)).

Ive seen Living Single, It is a watchable show... but I am a pretty big Friends fan, so I had to vote for Friends.

I disagree but I can see where you're coming from.

White people are certainly less likel to watch a black show I'm sure, but "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" had good cross over appeal. And "Living Single" seems to be cut from the same mold, more or less.
Sure, you'll get your,"Crossover black shows", like The Cosby Show and Fresh Prince. The common denominator....Both shows feature "safe non angry negroes".:lol::lol::p

I disagree. But I don't expect dvdtalkers to see the beauty in girls who're not thin or "Courteney Cox-like". ;)

I don't find CC attractive in the least.

I'm white and I prefer "Living Single." I also think the characters on that show are more interesting.

This cracked me up; though I disagree with your assessment of FRIEND's "heart", you've certainly got me and my wife pegged--we both adore FRIENDS and detest SEINFELD.

I preferred Living Single over Friends.

Living Single premiered during the 1993 to 1994 season and Friends during the 1994 to 1995 season. I always felt that Friends was inspired by Living Single.

It's fashionable to hate FRIENDS these days, but it was a very good sitcom. Not as good as CHEERS or SEINFELD, but certainly better than some of today's popular multi-camera sitcoms (ahem, TBBT :)).

I'll give you that. It was a niche show geared towards Black America. White people are less likely to watch such a show. Blacks however, can crossover to white shows much easier.

i.e. I happen to be a huge fan of Frasier which was even "whiter" than Friends. :D

^ Still fuckin' true.

Re: Which do you like better, "Living Single" or "Friends?"

Yes, Friends was a "cold show". That describes it perfectly to me. I didn't have an attachement to any of the characters, I didn't care where any of them went. Even with Seinfeld whos characters were supposed to be cold I actually felt for them.

As far as the 8 year old question, I can't say I was a fan of either but I think Friends had the higher highs in those first few seasons.
