My first post. I was wondering does anyone in the USA record new shows with captions or open subtitles. If so could you please let me know.

I can't say for sure, but I would think that most new shows on any network would have closed-captioning.

In fact, I'm pretty sure shows must provide CC by law in the US. The only channels I've noticed not provide captioning on a regular basis are History Channel International and Universal HD.

As of this year, every new show must provide closed captioning. However, right now, networks have to provide captioning on only 30% of their "old" programming (anything produced before 1998). This may be why some channels have infrequent captioning. This requirement will increase to 80% of all old shows in 2008.

As for the OP, I don't know if many people record shows with the captioning turned on, but all VCRs should capture the closed captioning on a show, meaning the captioning could be turned on and viewed later with the proper TV. I think a good number of DVD Recorders and PVRs are capable of preserving the closed captioning as well.

My VCR records the closed-captioning. I use it a lot when I can't make out what was said.

Closed captioning is actually encoded in the picture (off the edges that you can't see), so it's always recorded regardless of the device.

A quick google shows that there's some DVD recorders that people have had issues with. It could do with the compression of the image and some DVD recorders not preserving the line 21 information correctly.
