You should've asked DirecTV for the locals only service. I think it's $5.99 or $9.99.

We dropped our basic cable/broadband package last month ($58/month) and added DSL ($13.99/month) to our new phone package. Our tv is stricly OTA, but we are saving over $50/month. Now all we have to do is potty-train the daughter and we can afford that Series 3 Tivo in a few months.

I didn't think this was even possible? Can anyone second that?

I would love to use my HD DirecTiVo for just OTA (I've already invested plenty in it, spending another $700-$800 on a Series 3 TiVo doesn't sound like a plan).

You know, I too would be interested in "locals only."

Any input on that?

Same here...I've gotta believe they have a way of not letting you do that.

Good luck, nothing beats getting out of debt (especially if it's credit card debt--paying hundreds of dollars a month that's just interest sucks).

Think of how many IQ points you will gain by not watching TV!

You're in the wrong forum for that kind of crazy talk.

Take a look at the bottom of one of the pages for the international plans. For instance, this one.

They list a DirecTV Basic plan for $9.99 and a Preferred Choice plan for $29.99. The descriptions for these plans aren't listed anywhere on their site but I suspect the Basic plan is locals only and the Preferred Choice plan is equivalent to Dish Network's Top 60 plan.

I did a little research on the dbstalk forum and came up with this:

Those two packages are exclusive to their "WorldDirect" international programming. You can't get either package without subscribing to WorldDirect programming.

Basic is 50+ channels (including locals)
Preferred Choice is 80+ channels (including locals)
and
They don't like to advertise it, but yes I believe you can get DirecTV Basic if you want. However, you have to have already fulfilled your commitment and not be under contract. Basic will not satisfy the minimum programming requirements in the contract.

Actually, after your contract is up, you'd be surprised that you can get almost anything you want.

Just Basic....
I've read about someone that gets just HBO.
I personally get just NFL Sunday Ticket

They have the ability to turn any channel on or off, so why would they rather lose a customer than to maybe get a little money from them?
From the expertsatellite site:

I'm guessing a "can I get this" call isn't going to work, while a "give me this or I'm going to cable" might?

I got a call tonight from folks at DirecTV asking me to come back to them.

I told them that we were getting a local channels package from our cable company that was $15 a month with taxes.

They offered me $10 off their new Family Choice Package which is regularly $29.95, so I'd get it for $19.95 but with taxes and TiVo it would be about $28-$30.

I asked them if they had anything comperable to my little cable package and they said that was it.

I declined and said that we really only want to spend $15 a month. She understood and she thanked me for talking to her and we hung up.

So I guess that $10 package mentioned earlier in this thread is a myth.

The package is available, you just spoke to a CSR who didn't know. I think you're supposed to ask someone in the retention dept. And you won't get it if you're not persistent. You should read some of the threads on fatwallet. Some of those guys are able to get way more than what you're asking for.

Funny thing is the original CSR who called me transfered me to the retention department. I was on the phone with her for over 10 mins as she explained the different options, and I kept saying no. I even went downstairs and "talked" to the wife about and held firm that we didn't want to spend more than what we'd get for $15 at the cable co.

I scanned FW quickly and didn't find anything (searched for "directv retention")... when they call me back again, I'll see what they say.

I called my cable provider to find out the price on Basic service (just locals) and the HD package with DVR. They won't allow for non-locals in HD if you go this route (meaning, no InHD, Universal HD, etc). Essentially, only local channels in SD and HD with a DVR.

$34.39 per month.

No wonder I left cable.
