I remember in season 2 of Mythbusters when they started adding girls to the show left and right to get the ratings up. I think at 1 point they had 3 women on the team at once.

I don't think they kept adding women solely as a ratings ploy. Kari and Scottie both worked at the company before the show started. The reason they expanded the cast and re-structured the show a little was because Adam and Jamie did almost all of the work in season one and they just couldn't produce episodes fast enough on their own.
For that reason I think the first season (even without kari) is the best. There was a lot more Adam and Jamie screen time and they tested individual myths consecutively during a show instead of intercutting each myth (one of which usually isn't even very interesting) over the whole hour and saving the results of each until the end.
