"Firefly" to air in high definition on Universal HD

I guess Universal HD grabbed the rights to show Firefly in high definition when their corporate sibling Scifi gobbled up the cable rights.

"Serenity: Part 1" is on their schedule for 9/24. The word is that the effects weren't rendered in HD, so...don't expect it to look consistently great.

This may actually be a good reason to finally pick up an HD provider... I was hoping for Verizon Fios to show up around here by then but it doesn't look like it. Damnit I want my 1080i Firefly.

Wasn't the show aired when Fox was still doing the "fox widescreen ultra resolution" or some bs like that when it was higher quality then standard but not much better?

I think the first 2 episodes of the series were called Serenity as well. I'll be watching just to see what all the fuss was about.

Yeah, the pilot was called "Serenity" as well. This is definitely the show, and a great one as well. Saw it when it first aired on FOX, own the DVDs, but I'm looking forward to enjoying it in HDTV for the first time.

I did the same thing last year with Netflix, and I was not too impressed. However I have since seen the movie, and it really impressed me, enough that I will get the series on my DVR on HD (along with the movie in HD that has been on HBO this month. Give it a shot, and if you have not yet, watch the movie after the series.

There is a radio play netcast of firefly called Old Wounds. Its pretty good if you like that sort of thing. Good for the times you are stuck in traffic any way.

Have the DVR set to record all of these, but I watched a little bit of the pilot just for a teaser and it looked GREAT in HD!!

Can't wait to watch the whole series.

Is this a direct TV channel or something? I don't think Comcast has it.

It's not exclusive to any satellite or cable provider. The channel is available to any provider, it just depends on whether the provider chooses to carry it. If you don't have it, you should notify your provider that you do want it, and they may pick it up.

Nice. Just watched the movie on HBO HD a week ago and had never seen the series. Got the DVR set to record all of this.

Honesty....

I thought some scenes looked like shit....especially during the Battle of Serenity Valley.

I'm going to go back and compare it to my DVDs upconverted on my HDA1.

I watched part of it. Not sure I see much difference from the DVDs upconverted. But it is fun to get in the middle of an episode without planning to watch the dvds.

I compared it to my upconverted DVDs, switching between sources. Universal HD definitely looks better than the DVD, with more detail, but the compression on the HD means that it could look even better. The HD version had slightly less color saturation than the DVDs, although I think the HD colors may look more natural.
