It's too bad that with Ferrell gone, they haven't done anymore Celebrity Jeopardy skits. Those are classics. Until it became less about vapid & clueless celebrities and more about Sean Connery vs. Alex Trebek.

It's probably worth mentioning that Ohlmeyer apparently wasn't just out for MacDonald; he had a fairly long feud going with (long-time but by then pretty much WU-only writer) Jim Downey that almost even predated MacDonald's presence on the show, let alone their partnering on WU.
By Downey's account (by way of Live From New York), Ohlmeyer had "been just relentlessly trying to get me fired for like nine months before he ever laid eyes on me," had even more-or-less done so in whittling his presence down from head writer to just WU, and just didn't seem to find Downey funny. That MacDonald, Ohlmeyer's own pick over a similarly difficult Al Franken, would bond with Downey likely didn't help matters.
As close as the two were, firing MacDonald seemed to be effectively firing Downey, because he left the show as well that year, and didn't return until Ohlmeyer had been replaced.
Such is TV politics, I guess.
