What's up with Pimp My Ride??

No more West Coast Customs...all the "mechanics" are gone...except Mad Mike for some reason...and the show is 100% more scripted then ever. Seems all the cast is reading directly from cue cards.

I'm guessing that there was a contract dispute somewhere and MTV decided to just create its own 'garage' and while they're at it, might as well get a couple of writers for the reality show. Mad Mike and Xzhibit are the only survivors.

PMR was a joke before, but now compared to Payback and Overhauled and American Hotrod and even Monster Garage, it's pathetic.

In case you didn't remember, Mad Mike left West Coast Customs last season. He wasn't there the last couple of episodes. I don't know why PMR followed him to the new shop or why he left, because there was no mention of it last season.

I know Mad Mike is a defacto producer since he comes up with all the ideas for the cars. Maybe they felt that he was more important to the show than West Coast Customs.

I noticed this the other day. It's not a show I make a point to watch, but will if I stumble onto it. So I stumbled onto it the other night and was,

Not only does it seem completely scripted, but the head guy(white guy, beard, long hair) just reeks of actor-not a car guy at all. Not only that but but pimping out an ice cream truck to help the guy with his business? Fuck that. Borrow money and start up a small business like everyone else. Stick to the sob story(older sibling driving cancer stricken brother to the doctor and needs a decent ride, etc.) crap.

Seems like all the car rebuild shows are turning to crap. Pretty much given up on Overhaulin as well, since it seems to be more shots of the crew going "Wow dude, you're gonna love your new ride!" then footage of the build.

All TLC's fault no doubt.

You certainly don't know this place well enough for a guy who's been here for two years.

From Wikipedia:

Beginning with the fifth season, the show moved to another garage, GAS - Galpin Auto Sports, as Ryan, the WCC Owner has moved his shop to Corona, CA and is worried about his ability to both do the show and have another shop. However, the show retains Mad Mike [www.cmimadmike.com], now dubbed a "car customization specialist".

Apparently no big conspiracy. I still enjoy the show when I catch it. I think Xzibit is a really natural host, and seems like a good guy.

I don't know the answer, yet curiously choose to not remain quiet. Sometimes life's a bitch.

I used to get a good laugh out of this show for various reasons. One, it was ridiculously over the top. Who in the world needs a monitor just outside the fenderwell of their car? Who needs or would want all that crap in their car? Even if you had all of that, you wouldn't have it long because you would have been ripped off in less than a week. Two, you can only laugh at the junk they try and pass off as cars that people would actually own and drive. They just grab crap from the junk heap. It's all a con.

Add to that, somebody would need at least a couple batteries in their car to use all the monitors and shit that is thrown in there. I don't think the guys on the show work on the engine or any of the important aspects of the car that need work, unless it's greatly needed. And in that case, their solution is usually to just buy a Scion or some other car and deck it out. Wouldn't that be great? Taking in a piece of shit that was either passed down or, as you said, picked up at the dump, and get a free brand new car with all these TV's and add-ons that I would personally take out and pawn before somebody jacked them.

I've always wondered if any of those pimped-out cars ever got stolen. Many of the people they choose seem to live in less than perfect neighborhoods. I doubt a Honda with giant plasma screens and Xbox's would last long parked on the streeet.

They should definitely have a follow up "where are they now?" Pimp My Ride special. I think everyone that watches the show wonders the same thing. Unless of course it is a complete sham like mentioned above.

I've seen them throw extra batteries in the cars many times, and I doubt that legally MTV wants to deal with putting unsafe vehicles on the road. They do engine work when it warrants it too.

They also seem to pick good, deserving contestants who are grateful for the cars. I've never seen a Trading Spaces-like meltdown, and it's always fun to watch their reactions.

Not sure why there is so much hate for the show...

the show is only 30 minutes. it's not like overhaulin, where they have time to show all the stuff they do. since it's pimp my ride, they only concentrate on the pimp part.

i have seen them put a whole new engine in a car.

This is a fact. There was one episode where some kid was driving a car that had been 2 halves of two different cars welded together. Totally unsafe. They flat out wouldn't touch it. They bought the kid a new Scion (Element looking car/truck) and pimped that out instead. Needless to say that kid was blown away.

One of them went on ebay before it could get stolen:

Xzibit's a jerk. The show is just silly. When I saw them actually trying to restore a 1977 Chevy Malibu, it tells me the show is coasting on fumes. And really, after the cameras stop rolling that dude still has a 1977 Chevy Malibu regardless of what "cool gadgets" are inside of it.

I've seen a number of them up on ebay. I think most of the people they build the cars for can barely afford insurance and maintenance on the junk heaps they have, much less customized cars. I'll be willing to bet that less than 20% of the people still have their cars after the first 6 months.

Has that crappy show really been on for 5 seasons? it seems like 3 maybe..
