LOST followers .... does this get any better??
Well folks I finally got a chance to get started on LOST S1. I am half way through it and I am wondering what all the hoopla is about this show.
Spoiler:
While I do find it mildly interesting enough to see the next episode, I DO NOT feel utterly COMPELLED to keep going (as in I absolutely have to see what happens next and cannot put the remote down). I fully expected to be captivated with this show and dying to see each new episode like I did with 24, Farscape, BSG, West Wing, B5, Alias, but its not there right now. I do admit that I think performances on the show are excellent - Jack, Kate , Sawyer, Lock (this guy is creepy cool), even Hurley is a fun diversion. I could do w/o Shannon and her brother though. I plan to keep going with it til the end of the first season but am I missing something here?? Sorry for the rant & thanks. Greg PS - It was cool to see Mira Furlan back on the small screen! |
I'd say if that's how you feel after the midpoint of season one, there's not a real good reason to continue.
|
If you're not sucked in by now, it may just not be your "cup of tea". Nothing wrong with that. I watched all of Season 1 in like a week last summer because I couldn't stop.
But you coulnd't get me to watch American Idol or 24 if they were the last shows on Earth and I am obviously in the minority there, so different strokes for different folks. |

I loved from ep 1. If you don't care for it by now, I'd look for something else. LOST isn't for everyone. |
I'd say it's not the show for you. If you're not digging it by now, you probably won't enjoy the rest any better. Unlike something like B5, there's no magical point you have to reach before the show starts getting good.
|
Yeah, if you're not in by now, you won't be in as the first half or so of Season 1 is arguably the strongest of the 2 seasons thus far.
|
If you're not loving it by now then you probably won't enjoy the rest of it. And I can't imagine what you would think of S2. :)
|
It took a couple episodes to grab me, but not until halfway through the first season. I'd say I was officially hooked with Walkabout, which I think was the 4th or 5th episode. This was watching it on tv though. I think having to wait a week to see what happens next ratchets the suspense up a bit more than being able to just pop in the next disc. Either way, if you're enjoying it despite not feeling 'compelled' to watch it, I'd go ahead and finish season 1 at a minimum. I think it's some of the best writing and acting I've ever seen in a television season. The second season, IMHO, drops off in quality quite a bit, staying pretty uneven throughout before kicking it up a notch to finish with around 7 or 8 really great episodes.
|
As has already been said, you probably want to bail now if the show hasn't grabbed you by the throat. And quite honestly, if the pilot ep didn't do it then it's just not your bag.
If you are, however, interested in selling your Lost S1, drop me an email. |
I'll reiterate what the other posters said. If you're not digging the first half of Season 1, just quit now while you're behind.
The first 2/3 of Season 1 represent Lost at its peak. The final 1/3 of the season was filled with worthless flashbacks and the finale was a joke. Now fortunately for you should you decide to continue watching, you can go right from the finale to the Season 2 premiere. The massive letdown of the Season 1 "cliffhanger" will leave you a lot less underwhelmed if you can jump right into the following episode. Season 2 however is a major dropoff even from the final 1/3 of Season 1. More worthless flashbacks, an annoying new character is introduced(well technically she's shown toward the end of Season 1), and the show spins its wheels for the majority of the year since the producers and ABC are blatantly trying to milk this thing for all they can. The final handful of episodes were pretty solid, but for me it could be too little, too late. Plus the Season 2 cliffhanger made no sense to me whatsoever and was eerily reminscent of another J.J. Abrams 2nd season ending(that being Alias) which marked the "jump the shark" moment for that show. |
Thanks folks.
I am definitely going to watch the rest of S1. I will admit one of the reasons I have watched this many so far is that I feel that everyone is doing an excellent "job". That being said I guess I was expecting a little more of a grab ahold of you and fling you out of control down a cliff like 24 does. Its not that kind of show and I guess my expectations were simply set in the wrong place. I definitely enjoy the character interaction. The flashback stuff is annoying for sure (to me that is), and the "hokey" crap they have alluded to since day one Spoiler:
I'll give it til the end of S1 minimum as I am curious see what's up with Spoiler:
Thanks for the input though folks, much appreciated!! Greg |

i was hooked once that man got sucked into the engine. just wow!
|
I was hooked about 5 minutes into the pilot. If you're not into it by now, you probably never will be.
|
It's basically like x-files, there are no answers but more questions.

I think you still might come around to liking the show more because a lot of interesting ideas start up in the 2nd half of the season, so definitely keep watching until at least the end of Season 1. If the Season 1 finale doesn't leave you wanting to see more, then that's the point you should stop watching.
BTW... Spoiler:

I was hooked five minutes into the first episode, and I've never looked back. While it's hard for me to imagine someone not being interested in this show, I'll have to agree that, if you aren't that into it half way through S1, you might as well give up now.

I can't get my brother to even watch this show but he loves Grey's Anatomy and wouldn't miss an episode of it. Funny how some people are simply turned off from watching a show simply because other people love it and want more. I never watched Lost during the first season's run because I was unsure what it was about, but when the dvds came out I bought em and we watched the whole season within a few days.
|
Yup, hooked from the beginning and I think it's been strong ever since, so it's probably not for you.

Like others, we were hooked five minutes into the first episode. And if you aren't hooked at least by Walkabout you likely never will be. However, I will not say you should bail. It is an excellent show that even by your own estimation is far better than most of what is one tv. Keep going with it, including season 2 and just maybe you will find the episode/character/moment that does hook you. If not, all you have wasted is a bit of time watching a very good show with excellent performances.

What show have they been watching? During the second season we have learrned: Spoiler:
And that's just stuff left over from the first season. It's like people are pissed off because the producers don't hold their hand and answer every little question and tie up every dangling plotline immediately. So far, "Lost" has done a much better job of toying with the audience and answering questions in a coherent, satisfying manner than "X-Files" ever did. |
I'd continue to watch the rest of the season because it only gets better from where you said you were. Like others in this thread, I finished the first season in days—I found it that damn good. However, if by the end of the season you still do not feel compelled to watch, stop watching...because IMO the second season was no where near as good as the first one.
|
I was hooked pretty much from the first shot of the first episode so I'm not sure I can help you. It's been a bumpy ride but it's been really reqarding. Give it a couple more episodes but it is sounding like maybe it's not your thing. Still, a lot of stuff is going to happen soon.

As just a casual viewer it doesn't really get any better, but if you decide to start over analyzing everything, doing screen captures to spot clues, keeping journals, rewatching eps in slow mo, stuff like that...THEN it becomes an awesome show.
;) |
No offense to the OP, but I don't understand how some LOST fans continually say they "don't like the flashbacks." The flashbacks or "backstory" as we all call them now are such an integrated part of the LOST experience, that LOST wouldn't be LOST without them (IMHO). I think some sci-fi fans want Lost to be all about "the island" and not about the people - when it's really about both. I think learning about the lives of the people before the island and how they all tie in with each other (and why) are just as entertaining as plotlines like
Spoiler:
PS - the flashbacks don't go away. |

PS - the flashbacks don't go away. Now the FBs in LOST are absolutely critical I agree and they are well done. Without them we wouldn't crap about the characters. Therefore they are necessary, I just don't like that method of storytelling that's all. The reason I have stuck with the show and will is because it is very well done. The characters are great, the acting is excellent, and even the writing seems to be quite good. It is a good show and certainly worth watching it just doesn't have its hooks in me like the other shows I mentioned did/do. I am guessing I was expecting a lot from the show based on the hype. I mean I was thinking I was going to be so amped up needing to see what happens next that I would be staying up late and losing sleep over it (24 always does this to me). It hasn't done that ... bear in mind since I was home sick the other day I did barrell through the first three discs in one day. I will keep watching mainly cause I do like the people on the show. Ethan sure is a creepy-a$$ mofo though. But Lock may be the weirdest of all. I do like Lock's character the best, Karen (not sure what it is about this woman but I really dig this girl) and Sawyer are also very good too. Greg |
LOST is 80% about flashbacks and character study. If you remove the flashback part of the storytelling the show dies. We would have no way of finding out who these people are unless they all sat around a campfire and shared their stories. Boring. Without knowing anything about the castaways, it would just be a drama on an island with good guys vs. bad guys. Boring. The flashbacks make the show what it is. The creators know this. They ain't goin' nowhere.

(I crack myself up!) |
I predict that if you stick with it for the entire first season, then you will go on to watch the second season as well.
You'll know why I say that once you finish up the first season. One of the things that you have already said is what makes me think this. :) |
Ther think the flashbacks were good the first season but have grown unintersting.

you should at least stick with it until you see the episode that reveals that jack once got his hair cut.
