The CW Unveils New Logo, Sets Pickups
By Brian Ford Sullivan (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The CW has set its inaugural lineup of 12 returning series - six from UPN and six from the WB - as well as three newcomers.

In addition, the network has unveiled its new logo (see below), all in advance of its upfront presentation tomorrow.

http://img23.imagevenue.com/loc127/t..._theCWlogo.jpg

The WB's contribution, as expected, will include "7th Heaven," "Gilmore Girls," "Smallville" and "Beauty and the Geek" as well as the recently renewed "Supernatural" and "One Tree Hill."

Among those not making the cut: "The Bedford Diaries," "Blue Collar TV," "Everwood," "Living With Fran," "Modern Men," "Pepper Dennis," "Reba," "Related," "Survival of the Richest" and "Twins."

On the UPN side, "All of Us," "Girlfriends" and "Veronica Mars" are set to join "WWE Smackdown," "America's Next Top Model" and "Everybody Hates Chris."

Not so lucky were "Cuts," "Eve," "Get This Party Started," "Half & Half," "Love, Inc.," "One on One" and "South Beach."

Overall the combined lineup will feature the eight most-watched shows between the two networks - "Heaven" (5.28 million viewers on average), "Model" (4.99 million), "Smallville" (4.68 million), "Gilmore" (4.61 million), "Smackdown" (4.31 million), "Chris" (4.30 million), "Geek" (4.19 million) and "Supernatural" (3.82 million).

As for the remaining quartet, "One Tree Hill" (2.82 million) and "Veronica Mars" (2.31 million) are the 17th and 23rd most-watched programs respectively - behind "Everwood" (3.65 million, 9th) and the departing "Charmed" (3.52 million, 10th) - while "Girlfriends" (3.39 million, 12th) and "All of Us" (3.21 million, 13th) are just short of the exiting "Reba" (3.40 million, 11th).

On the pilot pickup front, the CW is said to be moving forward with "Runaway" and "Girlfriends" spin-off "The Game" for the fall with Kevin Williamson's "Palm Springs" snagging a midseason order.

"Runaway," from Sony Pictures Television, revolves around a family that becomes fugitives in order to prove the innocence of their patriarch (Donnie Wahlberg) - who's convicted of murder. Dustin Milligan ("The Days"), Karen LeBlanc ("Kevin Hill"), Leslie Hope ("Commander in Chief"), Nathan Gamble, Sarah Ramos ("American Dreams") and Susan Floyd ("Law & Order") also star in the hour, which comes from creator Chad Hodge and executive producers Darren Star and Ed Zuckerman.

"Palm Springs," from Lionsgate Television, is a coming-of-age drama about a troubled teen ("The O.C.'s" Taylor Handley) who moves to a gated community, where he uncovers some dark secrets. Amber Heard ("Alpha Dog"), Cheryl White ("The Book of Daniel"), D.W. Moffett ("The Book of Daniel"), Ellary Porterfield ("The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio"), Gail O'Grady ("Hot Properties"), Michael Cassidy ("The O.C.") and Sharon Lawrence ("Desperate Housewives") star.

And finally, CBS Paramount Network Television-based "The Game" is about a group of women in various stages of relationships with pro football players. Aldis Hodge ("Numb3rs"), Coby Bell ("Third Watch"), Hosea Chanchez ("Everwood"), Jennifer Baxter ("Dark Water"), Tia Mowry ("Love, Inc.") and Wendy Raquel Robinson ("All of Us") all star in the half-hour, which comes from executive producers Dan Dugan, Kelsey Grammer, Mara Brock Akil and Steve Stark.

As for lineup specifics, "Heaven," "Gilmore," "Mars," "Model," "Smallville," "Supernatural" and "Smackdown" are each expected to remain in their current time periods with the four comedies - "Chris," "All of Us," "Girlfriends" and "The Game" - shifting to Sundays starting at 8:00/7:00c. "Model" encores will likely fill the Sunday, 7:00/6:00c hour with "Runaway" on Mondays at 9:00/8:00c and "Hill" on Wednesdays at 9:00/8:00c. "Geek" then will spell "Model" cycles on Wednesdays.

As for Everwood having the higher numbers.
I remember back to when Jack & Bobby was cancelled. There was a rumour about a falling out between Berlanti and The WB. This could have been about the new Berlanti series that didn't make the cut last year. That point seemed to have marked the end of Berlanti. The cancellation of Everwood was just the final chapter, since Berlanti is now under contract with Touchstone (ABC).

I don't think this had anything to do with OTH or VM, but network politics. The powers that be wanted Berlanti and his productions gone.

That makes a lot of sense. It's really too bad ABC didn't just take over Everwood somehow, though. It's a lot better than the shows they're picking up based on the descriptions.

I remember when the series began -- it really had such promise. If I remember right, it was the envy of all the networks during that upfront cycle. It's a pity the WB didn't capitalize on it better.

That's good news for O.C. fans. If Oliver is busy on another show, the odds of him returning to The O.C. are slim-to-none.:)

I'm glad "Palm Springs" and "Runaway" got picked up (they where the two drama pilots I was looking forward too)... Especially 'Palm Springs' becuase I miss Kevin Williamson

That logo is so 70's.

Everwood.

There's been a miracle ressurection.

It's now in that small group of shows to have a series finale and then an "oops, one more season"...

Ahhh, so the CW rolled back the stone and found the 7th Heaven tomb empty. It's a miracle!

SuperBatMan 05-17-06 04:25 PM

Yay for Smallville, although it was all but confirmed.

Double yay for Supernatural, although it wasn't as close to cancellation, but still.

That logo is God awful though.

Draven 05-17-06 04:37 PM

So the whole "Say Goodbye to the Camdens" or whatever the WB marketing department is slapping on the promos is a load of hooey?

Rypro 525 05-17-06 05:47 PM

I couldn't help but laugh out loud because of how ridiculous it is that the cw renewed '7th Heaven' over 'Everwood.' Now I'm not hating 7th heaven, and I will admit to watching it back in the 90's, but from an executive standpoint, you would think they would renew the critically acclaimed show vs. the show that most people have been calling (the show that needed to end two years ago) for the last couple seasons...

And about the new logo... does anyone else like the old one much better?

dvd-4-life 05-17-06 06:01 PM

What happens to the WB Kids and more importantly-The Batman?

theedge 05-17-06 06:07 PM

I keep thinking of this everytime I hear about this network...and even more so since the logo was unveiled...

NOOOOOOOOOO REBA?
WTF?
I love Reba

DJariya 05-17-06 06:19 PM

I heard Alfred Gough and Miles Millar want to do 7 seasons of Smallville. So, 2 more to go.

Patman 05-17-06 07:10 PM

Rotate the logo 90 degrees clockwise, and it's almost the thumbs up sign (or thumbs down sign if you rotate it 90 degrees counter-clockwise).

I hope Supernatural doesn't remain in it's current time slow. I heard a rumor that it would return to Tuesdays. If it remains, then I have problems since I already have two other shows Thursday at 8:00.

Of course that's also the perfect excuse to finally pickup another DirecTiVo. And now that I've successfully hacked the other, I could easily setup Multi-room viewing.

Personally, I think it makes more sense to pair it up with VM or Smallville, rather than Gilmore Girls (assuming that they leave GG where it is, which they probably should).

Then again, I'm fairly confident I could combine these two networks myself in a single weekend (maybe longer if I have to watch pilots in development) and do a better job than they have... ;)

That was the temporary logo they had when they first announced plans for the network in January.

riley_dude 05-17-06 11:29 PM

Actually I like the design of the new logo but would rather have the blue from the old logo. I don't like that green.

They should shop it to Sci-Fi channel.

I thought that they might change their mind since I read yesterday that cancelling it would cost them over $20 million because they had a two year contract. I guess they're willing to pay out that money. I was one of (I guess the few?) that enjoyed this show.

critterdvd 05-18-06 11:28 AM

does anyone know when the press release will be made available?

Midseason Heats Up with New Drama Hidden Palms From Producer Kevin Williamson

May 18, 2006 (New York, New York) - The CW Network unveiled the schedule for its premiere 2006-2007 season today at Madison Square Garden before more than 3,000 advertisers, affiliates and national media. The announcement was made by Dawn Ostroff, President of Entertainment, The CW.

With the launch of The CW, we have an unprecedented programming advantage, said Ms. Ostroff. By bringing together established hit series with innovative new shows, we were able to create a stellar schedule for our premiere season. Putting this lineup together was a programmers dream with so many choices and so many passionate fans making their voices heard about the shows they love. We will launch in the fall with hit shows on all six nights, giving our affiliates a strong foundation to succeed from day one. The CW will be the destination network for viewers 18-34, and we will deliver quality, diverse programming that advertisers and viewers will embrace in a major way.

With a strong commitment to diversity, The CW will schedule two original hours of urban comedies on Sunday night. The returning series begin at 7:00 p.m. with EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS, the most acclaimed new show last season, from executive producers Chris Rock and Ali LeRoi. At 7:30 p.m., ALL OF US, from Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, is coming off an impressive season, and will be followed at 8:00 p.m. by GIRLFRIENDS, which has been the most-watched show by African Americans since it debuted in 2000. The new comedy, THE GAME, from GIRLFRIENDS producers Mara Brock-Akil and Kelsey Grammer takes a comedic behind-the-scenes look at the lives of the wives and girlfriends of the star athletes on an NFL team. The series stars Aldis Hodge, Coby Bell, Tia Mowry, Hosea Chanchez and Wendy Raquel Robinson. The 9:00-10:00 p.m. hour will top off the evening with an encore presentation of AMERICAS NEXT TOP MODEL.

Additionally, the four comedies will repeat on Sunday from 5:00-7:00 p.m., giving the network four hours of programming starring African-Americans on the most-watched night of the week.

Televisions longest-running family drama, 7TH HEAVEN, will return for an unprecedented eleventh season in its familiar Monday night timeslot. Due to the overwhelming outcry from fans and the fact that the series ratings were up in key demos last season, 7TH HEAVEN is the perfect platform to launch the new drama RUNAWAY, from executive producer Darren Star. Starring Donnie Wahlberg and Leslie Hope, along with newcomers Dustin Milligan, Sarah Ramos and Nathan Gamble, RUNAWAY focuses on a family on the run from the law until the father can prove he was framed for the murder of a co-worker. Living under assumed identities, the family has to stick together under extreme conditions in order to survive.

Tuesday nights are all about girl power with the return of the award-winning series GILMORE GIRLS, starring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, at 8:00 p.m., followed by another critical favorite, VERONICA MARS, starring Kristen Bell, at 9:00 p.m. These highly compatible series will each bring new viewers to the Tuesday lineup.

On Wednesday night, AMERICAS NEXT TOP MODEL will return in its highly successful 8:00 p.m. timeslot. This super-hit from supermodel Tyra Banks will air two cycles each season, alternating with one cycle of another hit reality show, BEAUTY AND THE GEEK, from producers Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg. Returning drama ONE TREE HILL will continue to build on its already loyal young fan base on Wednesday night.

Thursday night turns on the testosterone with the pairing of two action-packed dramas, SMALLVILLE, starring Tom Welling as the young Clark Kent, and SUPERNATURAL, starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. Both series showed extreme compatibility after being paired together the second half of last season, with SUPERNATURAL retaining more than 90% of the SMALLVILLE lead-in in key demographics.

The wildly popular FRIDAY NIGHT SMACKDOWN! rules the night with two hours of original wrestling extravaganzas 52 weeks a year.

Uprooted to a new neighborhood and bused into a predominantly white school two hours away by his strict, hard-working parents, Chris struggles to find his place while keeping his siblings in line at home and surmounting the challenges of middle school. Personally, I TiVo everything and couldn't give a rat's ass how they choose to pair things up. I make my own TV schedule and combine things as I decide.

Still, I guess your point does have a certain ring of logic to it. I can understand why they would pair certain shows together regardless of my personal needs. :D

Anyway, this is a blessing since it's the perfect excuse to finally add another DirecTiVo to the house.
