One of their many, many Star Trek fuckups--seems they've hardly ever done anything *right* with the franchise.

I think it is better that Trek Phase II never saw the light of day. It was going to be part of a 4th network at the time, and would have been expected to be the flagship show. Would have been too much pressure for a sci-fi show that didn't rate well to begin with. Had it gotten an early hook, we probably would have never seen any Trek movies nor future Trek television series.
In other words, be happy with what actually happened.

As for why Paramount decided to do a movie, blame George Lucas -- when Star Wars hit big, it made Paramount realize there was an audience that was willing to pay money to see science fiction in the theaters.

Hunter
Ran from Sep 1984 to Apr 1991.
Returned with two tv-movies in 2002-2003, which were succesful enough they temporarily brought the show back with 5 new episodes which aired from Apr 2003 to May 2003.

I'd give my right arm if this would happen with STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE!
Oh and adamblast, if there was no STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, there'd be no WRATH OF KHAN or any of the other extraordinary, Spock-included, filmed adventures--methinks thou doest protest too much.

Exactly... if the Phase II show had crashed and burned (and I think that's probably likely), that would have been the end of it. No Wrath of Kahn and other movies, no TNG, no DS9.
The decision to go directly to a big-screen movie series was hardly a fuckup. It was financially (and, I would argue, creatively) successful.

UK shows don't count. They don't run in consecutive seasons like US shows but as individual series at the whim of the producers. It's not unusual for a UK show to skip a few years then come back.
Anyway, I'll add "It's a Living" which ran from 1980 to 1982 and from 1985 to 1989.
The shows like Charles in Charge with same basic characters but with a new family should count. Shows that run for a long time without going off that air often change most of their characters during the run (ER, M*A*S*H). Reinstated shows shouldn't be held to a higher standard.
Also, Mission Impossible. It was brought back during a writers strike and then kept for a little while after. It was conceived as a remake using the old scripts, but they ended up only reusing a couple.

Way to go, Sam!!! And the world is a better place now that he fixed that point in time.
I could of sworn that it had gone away for a while and then was brought back. Maybe the network had decided to cancel the show at the end of one of the seasons but then gave into fan support to bring it back the following season uninterrupted. I honestly do remember at some point QL was going to be cancelled and then the fans saved the show.... just apparently foggy on the details.
