Ann Curry has been waiting in the wings longer than any of them and, by all rights, should get it. The fact that she often acts like a 33 1/3 record played at 45 will try my nerves on a daily basis, though, I can assure you. As mentioned above, Campbell Brown is mesmerizingly awful, with ZERO, ZILCH, NADA sense of humor and should be dropped from Today altogether, god forbid promoted. Merideth Viera isn't much better--she's definitely an ice queen and frankly gives me the heebie-jeebies. She always seems to me like she's in dire need of a good screw. Natalie Morales isn't bad at all, but again, seniority should rightfully win in Ann Curry's favor.

OldBoy 04-05-06 05:06 PM

if Merideth Viera gets the gig and actually stays there, i wouldn't be surprised if the other mainstays, Matt included, will follow Katie's suit and leave. she is a horrible choice. she has no personality and as dry as an otter in the Gobi.

I agree. I think Meredith is holding up better than Katie in the looks department, but she doesn't have the energy Katie has now, let alone 15 years ago when Couric was making her name on the Today show.

On the other hand that french chick is too good looking and probably too young. Housewifes (Today's bread and butter) would hate her.

Hey, I'm Today's bread and butter, and I think she is gorgeous, in a non lesbian kind of a way, mind you.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Patman 04-05-06 07:19 PM

I'm not sure how I feel about a chipmunk telling me the daily news...

Cardiff Giant11 04-05-06 07:42 PM

I've been a CBS New viewer for years but I'll probably switch to NBC, I just don't like Couric she's too peppy. If anyone should be pissed off it's Bob Scheffer and John Roberts. When rather left, I really thought John Roberts would immediately get the gig. Guess I was wrong.

Jadzia 04-05-06 08:00 PM

I love Meredith Viera, she is the only tolerable thing about the View. I have never liked Katie Couric and don't watch Today mainly for that reason. Plus I love Diane Sawyer on GMA.

Diane is 60 and looks great so I don't see why Meredith's age should matter.

huzefa 04-05-06 08:11 PM

How come nobody's pushing for Star Jones to be put on the show? ;) We need more people of color on our morning shows.

bluesix 04-05-06 10:54 PM

This is a horrible idea that will inevitably fail! How can CBS be so stupid?

The fact that their evening newscast is actually managing to GAIN some viewers by using a serious newsman with loads of credibilty like Bob Schieffer should tell them everything they need to know. Kudos to him for putting up with their crap!

America does not want someone as lightweight as Couric delivering the serious stuff we see on the 6:30pm show. Sure, she covers some news events on Today but name one big world changing event she has covered. Her hardest hitting interviews have been with celebrities! If CBS needs someone to host, find someone who has spent some time in Iraq at least once in the past 3 years for Chrissake!

She is a laughable choice doomed to fail. At least it will ensure Brian Williams another year at #1. He's been a fine replacement for Tom Brokaw in my opinion. And as someone else pointed out, it also gives NBC an easy way out to escape criticism for replacing Katie with a fresher face.

You can't blame her for wanting to try something different but jeesh, CBS News really has fallen far.

magiccmom 04-05-06 11:29 PM

I get all my serious news from John Stewart and the Daily Show anyway~

That's what Roberts thought, too. . .

What happened to John Roberts, CBS News' White House correspondent? We miss him.

You can now find him on CNN, where he moved recently. Roberts made the switch after the new chief of CBS News inferred that the new permanent anchor of "CBS Evening News" will not come from within the division's current ranks. In the eyes of many outside observers, Roberts had been the front-runner for the job.
I like Meredith, too--and I agree that she's pretty much the only thing that's even remotely tolerable about The View. But I guess I'm just surprised that they're going with the 52-year-old Vieira when they've got those young thirty-somethings waiting in the wings.

Bob Schieffer, who is 69 years old, has made it clear that he accepted, and wanted, the position as a temporary anchor until CBS chose a permanent anchor, and it has been well-publicized that ever since Dan Rather left, Les Moonves has wanted Couric to be the permanent anchor.

Credibility, schmedibility

I don't see why it takes "credibility" to read a TelePrompter

Forget about that--how about getting the news from Internet web sites all day long??

movieking 04-06-06 11:09 AM

The only time I get news from TV is when it is breaking news that interrupts my shows. Otherwise, 99% of the time I get it via the web.

Patman 04-06-06 01:00 PM

I'm surprised Julie Chen isn't the CBS news anchor with Moonves at the helm.

BravesMG 04-06-06 01:29 PM

Not that I watch network news or anything, but this giggling moron certainly won't help. I agree with the post that all these people do is read TelePrompters, I'm not exactly sure what skill is necessary for that. But I've got two words how to get me back. ROBOTIC NEWS. I'd watch a robot read the news every freaking night. (insert your Stone Phillips joke here :) )

Patman 04-06-06 01:50 PM

Meredith Viera did get the Today Show job now vacated by the chipmonk.

wmansir 04-06-06 01:51 PM

Lead anchors in the US aren't like news readers at local stations. They can select stories, edit copy and can have near complete control over the newscast. Couric probably won't have as much control as Rather did, but she was named something like executive producer in addition to lead anchor.

Also it's official that Meredith Vieira is taking over for Katie on the Today show.

Filmmaker 04-06-06 02:20 PM

Yep, backed up here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12185893/?GT1=7938

YUCK!!!

B.A. 04-06-06 02:26 PM

She's a good, safe choice.

tucker 09-05-06 07:29 PM

tonights was her first night. what did you guys think??

TomOpus 09-05-06 08:15 PM

The format of a nightly news stiffles whatever spark she had on the Today Show. Gone is the playful banter with co-hosts and guests. Gone is the hearty laughter and teeth-baring smiles.

Everything fun about Katie is gone...

Which is precisely what's wrong with this ever increasing mix of entertainment and news that's been spearheaded by the morning news shows.

In a recent promo show for "My Network" had KTTV's news anchor Mark Thompson interviewing the actors "in character." Where does make-believe and real reporting begin and end?

Nick Martin 09-06-06 12:16 AM

My tuning in had nothing to do with Couric. I just wanted to hear the new theme music.
