Regarding 24 and Alias, I love them both but both shows have had their fair share of moments that made me roll my eyes. The differences for me are that 24's groan-inducing moments are usually either part of the side stories and not part of the main arc
, or they are quickly forgotten because the story shifts at such a fast pace. On Alias, however, they are often the big moments
. Of course, neither show comes close to Smallville in that regard, but that's another thread entirely.

I used to watch the show starting with its original episode. And I liked Season 1 all right, but the up-and-down Seasons 2 & 3 caused me to bale out on the show when Season 4 started. I haven't looked back.
(And I have a friend who claims 24 is the best show on TV... something I strongly dispute, but I just can't convince him to watch, IMO, superior shows like LOST and Battlestar Galactica to prove my point.)
