AOL's IN2tv has launched - Freakn' Sweet!

I just got an email from AOL saying that their IN2tv site has launched.

http://television.aol.com/in2tv

If you don't know what this is, well its a partnership with AOL and WB to offer a bunch of full length episodes of tv shows to watch on your computer for FREE (advertising is shown). Currently it looks like they have 10 episodes of each of the various shows that they offer.

The regular low quality resolution is 320x240. The high quality episodes require you to install an activex plugin which takes only a few seconds to install. The full length episodes are downloaded to your computer using a download manager and one ~43 episode was roughly ~485 MB and I was downloading an episode of Lois&Clark at about ~285 MBps with my cable modem. I was also downloading an episode of Freddy's Nightmare's at ~1-3 MBbs which is pretty fast. The lower resolution is not that bad for casual viewing, and are streamed directly in your browser. The higher quality relosution is pretty good, but I imagine it would be a bit better on DVD.

I've been anticipating the release of this since it was first announced. A lot of these shows are not on DVD yet so it's going to be great to finally see some of these shows again like PINKY and the BRAIN, BRISCO COUNTY, FREDDY's NIGHTMARES and BEETLEJUICE! Hopefully they will be tracking the viewship of these episodes to guage a possible interest in DVD releases. I know watching some of these shows will probably get me to buy them when they come out on DVD.

They say they are going to be offering more shows and also newer shows that I guess would have recently aired as well as movie trailers and other exclusive content.

List of currently available shows:

Adventures of Brisco County Jr.
Alice
Babylon 5
Beetlejuice
Chico and the Man
Dark Justice
Eight is Enough
F Troop
Falcon Crest
Freakazoid
Freddy's Nightmares
Growing Pains
Hanging With Mr. Cooper
Head of the Class
Histeria
Kung Fu
La Femme Nikita
Lois and Clark
Maverick
New Adventures of Batman
Perfect Strangers
Pinky and the Brain
Scarecrow & Mrs. King
Sisters
Spenser for Hire
The F.B.I.
The Fugitive - Recent version
V
Welcome Back Kotter

No go for Mac and Linux users, at least not yet. Just a warning to those that don't subscribe to Redmond.

I was so excited to see Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain and Freakazoid!...then I find out that it's not for Macs. I was quite disappointed. Let's hope they get around to Mac support soon.

I would assume you could use the S-video out on your video card if you have that option. Otherwise maybe some sort of adapter.

If you have a TIVO you could use JavaHMO to show your computer screen on your TV.

Probably a bunch more ways to get the picture from your computer to your tv.

Ironic, considering AOL was originally for Mac.

I did as well. Acorrding to windows update, I have all updates for WMP installed, yet when I try to view the Hi-Q vid, it gives me an error that the license is expired, but right in the "My Videos" frame it says it expires 1 June 2006. For the low quality, all it plays is the ads; it won't even load the show. I've never had any problem playing a wmv before. I just wants ta watch mah F-Troop!

also, I didn't see Animaniacs in the list. Is there a ETA on when it will be on the site?

Is there a way to download these directly or must you watch them streamed online and that's that?

Is this restricted to US citizens? I tried viewing some of the shows and nothing happens for me.

That's kinda like Mac, right?

Maybe it didn't really become popular until the Mac version came out? There's some connection with Mac and AOL, unless I'm just making it all up..?

I believe I read yesterday that it's free streaming with a paid download service to come in a few months.

I tried downloading the HI-Q version of the pilot for "THE FUGITIVE" and it downloads the pilot episode of "ALICE" instead. Anyone else having this problem? What the heck...

Just saw 21 minutes of Wonder Woman in Hi-Q but when I went back to finish the ep, it wouldn't let me FF into the ep. Plus, the site for the low quality stuff is really slow.

But still, Babylon 5, here I come.

Yeah, there doesn't appear to be a FF option. I just pause and come back to it later without closing the window.

It's actually kinda convoluted. (Simple version.) Q-Link was for the 64, which was followed by PC-Link for PCs, Promenade for the PS1, and AppleLink for Macs. The latter three then got merged together to form AOL. Q formed the basis for the server software that became AOL, but it never actually evolved into it. (Which is why until a couple years ago the limit for users in a room was 23, it went back to the limit of the C64 stack.)

Same thing here using IE. It said to re-install Windows Media Player. Re-installed WMP 10 twice, still got the same error. It wanted an ActiveX plugin for Firefox. Riiggghtt, I'm gonna install a big security hole in Firefox. Don't think so. Finally just gave up on the idea of watching anything on that site.

This sounds like the same thing that happened to me, follow the instructions here and see if they work:
