I didn't really care for the hostage situation part of the episode. The ending was a surprise, I'll give them that. But only because it seemed entirely out of the blue. I'm assuming Dan still thinks Keith tried to kill him, cuz there's no other reason for him to shoot the dude. But if that's the case, what was up with the scene in the park last episode?

I have never been more annoyed with a show...they had a good opportunity to take a very serious turn and produce a quality episode. Instead, they spent a full hour preaching to us and making every possible excuse to take some of the blame off these twisted little f***ers that shoot up schools.
According to the wisdom of OTH, none of it is really their fault. The blame all lies on the OTHER students. blech.
I have a feeling this is all gonna be SOMEBODY'S dream.

Where the writers really screwed up with tonight's episode was not building up "fatass" all season long. Yeah, he'd show up every once in a while, but that was for all of 5 seconds. Suddenly last episode he's thrown right into the middle of everything which did nothing more than telegraph tonight's events.

He didn't have that "I could shoot up a school" look.
He had that "I could eat a box of dounuts" look.
A little too heavy handed on the message. Some craptastic acting. Otherwise not a bad episode.
Great ending.

"Haha, that was a good one Danny!"
"Sorry Keith, I just wanted to test out that bullet-proof vest I made you wear."

I hate to criticize any piece (movie, show, song, whatever) where someone is trying to teach/enlighten, but I have to.
Payton (I still never learned how to spell her name) had some really really awful acting. I know she was wounded and her mental state was supposed to be questionable, but it really hit me that Hilarie Burton is eye candy with no acting chops.
Keith calling Jim "son" over and over again, while I know it was serving a purpose was equally as teeth gritting. He just sounded weird doing it. Like it was forced.
The part reedeming the show - in regards to not being drab was the ending. I was groaning when Keith went in, thinking oh no there goes one of my favorite characters. Then comes Jimmy killing himself and I think, "Okay, not unpredictable, but at least Keith lives." But Dan shooting Keith. Amazing. I didn't see it coming from anywhere. And while I don't put it past Dan, that is probably the ballsiest thing I've seen done on TV in recent memory.
I think the episode was carried out well, not nearly as groanworthy as I expected. I just home Keith is alright and somehow Dan gets nailed.

I'm not so long out of High School, and what these kids are going through wasn't remotely what was happening at my school. Granted I grew up in a very liberal/diverse area (SF Bay what what!), so my views are probably the extreme positive side of the argument. The so-called nerds at my HS ran the place. The artists and goths and what not had massive friend circles. And there really weren't "cliques". The Jocks/nerds/whatever else grouping you can name all hung out together. I know I can't be completely all inclusive, but when I was a senior I could name my whole class by face. And it isn't like I spent nights studying my yearbooks.
Does stuff like this (not the shooting but the bullying and outcasting) actually happen elsewhere? If it does, I'd probably be one of the nameless few. Not saying I'd shoot up the place, but if I was picked on all through HS I honestly couldn't say what would happen.
I think the part where Keith hugs Karen calling Luke their son right in front of Dan was the snap. Whether or not they reconciled (and they didn't it was more of a mutual I f**k you, I'm f**ked), Dan still hated Keith (for Deb, Karen, and Luke).
That's what I was thinking. If they brought some semblance of him being actually at the school for any of the last 2 seasons the show would have been a lot more worthy. But the way it was done, put the viewers in a "so what?" state. We don't know the guy, we don't care so much about him.

That and poor ratings ... although "many" was the wrong word. Sorry :-)
Edit:
NOTE: The following is about Everwood and a different production company.

good episode imo. i actually cursed at the tv when dan killed kieth. since our local affiliate had an acc game on after the show, they actually started the commercials right in the middle of "the important announcement", which i kind of found humorous.
