This could be old news, but i haven't seen anyone talk about it in one of these threads. When I was looking for the episode list, I thought the site had dharma in the title, so I did a search for it. the first one i clicked was one that said something about dharma. I didn;t realize Dharma was a buddhist principle or something along those lines, but I thought this was interesting...

Welcome to About Dharma
Everyone wants to be happy and no one wants to suffer, but very few people understand the real causes of happiness and suffering. We tend to look for happiness outside ourself, thinking that if we had the right house, the right car, the right job, and the right friends we would be truly happy. We spend almost all our time adjusting the external world, trying to make it conform to our wishes. All our life we have tried to surround ourself with people and things that make us feel comfortable, secure, or stimulated, yet still we have not found pure and lasting happiness.
It is time we sought happiness from a different source. Happiness is a state of mind, so the real source of happiness must lie within the mind, not in external conditions. If our mind is pure and peaceful we shall be happy, regardless of our external circumstances, but if it is impure and unpeaceful we can never be truly happy, no matter how hard we try to change our external conditions. We could change our home or our partner countless times, but until we change our restless, discontented mind we shall never find true happiness.

Dharma" means "protection". By practising Buddha's teachings we protect ourself from suffering and problems. All the problems we experience during daily life originate in ignorance, and the method for eliminating ignorance is to practise Dharma.

Practising Dharma is the supreme method for improving the quality of our human life. The quality of life depends not upon external development or material progress, but upon the inner development of peace and happiness. For example, in the past many Buddhists lived in poor and underdeveloped countries, but they were able to find pure, lasting happiness by practising what Buddha had taught.

If we integrate Buddha's teachings into our daily life, we will be able to solve all our inner problems and attain a truly peaceful mind. Without inner peace, outer peace is impossible. If we first establish peace within our minds by training in spiritual paths, outer peace will come naturally; but if we do not, world peace will never be achieved, no matter how many people campaign for it.

No, silly, they dropped him off in front of a green screen.

Eh, The $$$ and knowledge somebody it working their ass off rendering you a background is comforting at least.

I don't get why people get pissed off when they don't provide answers in the show, the entire fun is speculating and figuring out what is going on, and the hints continue to come. Solid answers come too, but they aren't nearly as fun. To each their own I suppose.

That was Kate's dad.

There's no comedy in the words "green screen", or "CGI" for that matter. Now, "matte painting", that's comedy gold.

wow took me an hour to get dvdtalk to come up.

i have cable internet.

did Lost kill the internet tonight.
htf is slower then ever.
dvdtalk isnt coming up.
4815162342.com is superslow.
www.lost-forum.com is about the only one coming up quick for me.

so while the red panels are flipping i could see at least two other objects.
one was another bird.
the other was hard to tell it could have been a being crouching with the legs or arms folded over or a flower.
the stems coming up and down in 2 arched on either side of the main stem.

then after locke hit execute as the camera pans over his shoulder the is a knife in the first panel on the left.

then it quickly changes to the flower/crouching guy like thing.

and there is another flower/guy in the 4th panel.

Holy Shit! What a tease that was in the hatch with the counter. I am dying to know what was gonna happen.

No shit. Loved it.

Loved the episode, Sayid is gangster. :johnwoo2:

mongoco 02-16-06 01:01 AM

For someone who felt so bad after what he did to Sawyer, Sayid sure fell back into his torturer role pretty easily. Also, since when does Ana Lucia take orders from Sayid?

Charlie Goose 02-16-06 01:03 AM

Poor Locke was squirming in Jack's grip as the counter ticked away.

I guess the Sawyer/Hurkey subplot was just to show that Sawyer really really is an asshole. Good old Hurley was going to carry that little frog to safety. I liked his reaction when Sawyer squished it; his standard chestnut, "Dude."

Sayid is one badass interrogator. When Jack (who is really getting on my nerves now) pulled him out, and Sayid and Balloon Man exchanged glances, it really didn't look like BM was afraid of him. Maybe he is an Other. I liked this Sayid episode more than his first one.

Baron Of Hell 02-16-06 01:03 AM

I liked the CG myself. I thought it gave the flashback a dream like quality.

Legolas 02-16-06 01:19 AM

They must've hired the green screen guys from Highlander: Endgame.

Speaking of Highlander, I wonder if Clancy Brown taught Sayid to use a sword.

jarofclay73 02-16-06 01:43 AM

Actually, that solider with Sayid is Kate's stepdad (and they had to show us the photo to prove it). Kate blew up her "real" father.

Liked the episode. I felt we didn't see Sayid grieve enough about Shannon but here he proves that he really DID deserve an Emmy. But, like last week's "I'm hiding guns because you stole my stash" explanation, I didn't really buy the "I know he's one of the Others beacause I felt no guilt" explanation. The final glance at Balloon Man was great though. However, I did like the fact that Sayid pointed out that everyone forgot what happened in Season 1. And it's a nice segue to next week's episode about what happened to Claire when she was kidnapped.

Josh-da-man 02-16-06 01:54 AM

Henry Gale, the man from Minnesota who crashed the hot air balloon on the island.

Consider these facts:

* In "The Wizard of Oz," Dorothy's Uncle was named Henry. Her last name is Gale.
* The Wizard had a hot air balloon.
* Judy Garland was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. (I have relatives who live there, so I know this.)

Easter eggs planted by the writers, or is "Henry" making it all up?

I hope we see more of Clancy Brown. I think he might be one of The Others. The tape he played for Sayid had "Property of the D.I.A." embedded on it. D as in Dharma? Maybe he's on the island with Mr. Friendly.

Or maybe he told Sayid to beat the prisoner with a pillow case filled with cans of soda.

Wow, I just made a very obscure reference. Yay me.

I didn't notice all of the Wizard of Oz references to the Balloon Man. I love when writers do good research.

I'm thinking he taught him to calm a room of stark, raving lunatics by whispering "Be still" so he could hear the radio better.

Or maybe how to make a mean Krabby Patty.

sven 02-16-06 04:58 AM

I hope the next episode's flashback stars someone from The Wire or Rome.

movieking 02-16-06 06:19 AM

To me, I thought that Sawyer should have let the frog go. What exactly does killing the frog do? We already established last week that he is a badass, etc. By letting the frog go, it would have started to show some of his good again, which you just know is going to happen sooner or later, when Kate starts making goo goo eyes at him again.

I didn't miss Kate this episode, but I missed Jin and Sun. I would love to have more episodes centered around them.

DVD Josh 02-16-06 06:40 AM

If you noticed, there's no episode next week. When they say "Coming up on LOST", that's your cue there's a break. The next new episode is 3/1 (Claire's flashback)

Or Lisa Kudrow and Sayid can punish her for The Comeback.

Patman 02-16-06 07:28 AM

They should just spin off Sayid with a show called "The Torturer".

taa455 02-16-06 07:31 AM

The dude is definitely lying. That look he gave at the end was a dead giveaway.

They're my favorite. Unfortunately their backstories are played out, IMO. Any more explanation is unnecessary. Sayid is my second favorite, so needless to say I loved this episode.

Didn't catch the Wizard of Oz references. Very cool.

Is the last symbol on the counter the Arrow from the other hatch? Meaning the one next to it(bird) could represent another Dharma station? That was a giant tease. Glad to see Jack still could care less about the button.

DVD Josh 02-16-06 07:33 AM

I thought this episode was incredible. No wonder Naveen Andrews won an emmy last year. His conversation with Charlie was great. This may be the best of all the flashbacks in terms of connecting it with their present state, in explaining why they are who they are.

It should have been "My name is Sayid Fayrah. I am a Torturer. And I'm a fucking badass motherfucker.".
