My Name Is Earl -- "Something To Live For" -- 02.02.2006

"Something To Live For"
Earl (Jason Lee) takes his car troubles as a sign that it is time for him to redeem himself for a long run of stealing gas out of a complete stranger's car. A few months back, Earl and Randy (Ethan Suplee) siphoned gasoline for about a month from an unlock car in the trailer park. When Earl goes back to the trailer park to return the gasoline, he discovers that the owner Philo (guest star Adam Goldberg, "A Beautiful Mind") is an annoying and suicidal man who is more determined than ever to succeed with his suicide attempts. Unable to just walk away, Earl makes it his duty to give Philo a reason to live and it seems that setting him up on a date with Joy (Jaime Pressly) is the only way of doing this. Earl and Randy however, find that something else they provide is what will ultimately save Philo. Nadine Velazquez and Eddie Steeples also star.

May just be me, but definitely seemed like a step backwards for the series.
The Classy Ass gags were funny though, and is it just me or does Randy seem crazier and slightly dumber than before.

Joy has stole the show in many of the episodes and this was no exception. I want to know where to find that song played in the episode about Joy. That is my wife's name and I would love to have that song.
The whole line about sometimes it ends with your date having sex in the bathroom with a black man was classic.

"Tinkle. How stupid. I wonder what he calls going ploppies?"
Randy's definitely regressed in this episode. And Catalina was severly underused. They need to work in some of those sexy montages that "Son Of The Beach" used to show the girls in hot situations.

I thought this episode continued the trend of the past few episodes have seen of de-emphasizing the list. I haven't heard anything about the network giving notes to that effect, but I think it could explain the change in episode naming convention and the changes we have seen to make the episodes less formulaic.

JasonF asked:
Why did they stop naming the episodes after the items on Earl's list?
Why did they stop naming the episodes after the items on Earl's list?
I thought this was the least successful episode of the series so far.
Which is not to say that it sucked, but some of the other ones have been really great.

I thought it was good. I thought that was Adam Goldberg, but like the other guest stars he looked different enough to question my assumption it was him.
He will make a great recurring character. He was excellent on Friends as the psycho.
I liked how Randy wants Earl to hurry up and finish the list so they can go back to stealing stuff. Obviously missing the whole idea of it.
And Joy looking hotter than Catalina? That dude is insane.
He must not have been in the bar last week for the pole dance.

For once a character played by Adam Goldberg that didn't totally annoy me!

This episode definitely wasn't up there with the Pilot or Joy's Wedding, but it had its moments.
You can definitely tell they are trying to turn this into a more serious series rather than a collection of gags that Earl runs into while completing his list. Keep the same gags, but add a feel good moment at the end.
