TV Logos Make Their Mark....
http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117...23-421,00.html
I've always heard of this possibly happening while playing video games...a map in the corner of the screen could burn itself into the screen, never thought about it happening with the logo of a network. But then again, I'm assuming it would takes hours, if not days, for it to occur.
TV logos make their mark

Televisions ... channels making an impression / file
TELEVISION cricket and tennis coverage is making a lasting impression on plasma screens.
The logos used by Channel 7 and Channel 9 during long days of sporting action are burning themselves into the delicate digital monitors.
With the hi-tech TVs costing thousands of dollars, some owners have threatened legal action saying their screens have been ruined.
Viewer Wayne Spiers says he bought a $3000 plasma screen on Christmas Eve. It now bears Nine's logo in the right-hand corner, a legacy of the Boxing Day test, which his family watched on and off for five days.
It was matched by a Channel 7 logo last week, which appeared after one day of watching tennis.
Mr Spiers, of Melbourne, said: "It was silly of me to assume Channel 7 and 9 would care enough about their viewers to ensure their logos wouldn't damage our TVs."
Screen burn occurs when onscreen graphics - displayed in one spot for a long time - become seared into the plasma.
A ghost image then lingers on other programs, even on rival stations.
Stations can avoid the damage by using a watermarked logo, in a transparent shape that adopts the colours on screen.
A Seven spokesperson said: "Turning down the contrast on your picture will reduce the problem."
A Channel 9 spokesman would not comment.

It would be awesome if this moved the networks to remove those stupid bugs. More likely, though, is that the bugs will just shift from one side to another or periodically change shape and size or something equally as annoying.

I'd vastly prefer it if they toned them down and went with the watermarked look, but that just doesn't appear likely to happen.

Yep. my 4-year-old projection TV has a faint burn in of the FOOD Network logo in the lower right of the screen. Really only noticable when the area is very light. If I ever sell the set, I'll have to make sure I throw up something with a dark picture.
Funny thing is, I don't remember the FOOD Network being on more than any other channel.
DVD and Hi-Def looks great on it, so I'm hoping my next TV purchase is at least a few years away, but I'm looking at something that won't burn-in (that leaves plasma out). Maybe DLP.

While these logo bugs suck, much of the blame needs to go to manufacturers for packaging their sets in torch modes and consumers for spending thousands of dollars on a piece of technology they don't know how to properly maintain.

In order to burn in a logo, you would have to leave the channel on continiously for WEEKS.

It seems to be a cumulative effect. Even if you break it up over the course of years, if something is on the screen in the same place for too long, you'll get burn in.

The new CW Network should be logo-free, and promote itself as such. That would get me to watch their shows.

From memory channel 7 and 9 from the OP have watermarked logos. I can still see it happening though, we left a plasma at work on with a blue screen (pressed stop on the vcr) for about 2 hours and the screen was tinted from then on.

I've had a Sony RP-CRT for about 5 years now and have it calibrated well and haven't noticed any signs of burn-in and I watch a ton of television and play a lot of video games. Just lucky I guess.
That said my next television will use a technology that is not susceptible to burn-in.
