Simple rule: Avoid Season 9 like the Plague!!!
Do that, and you'll be fine because the Season 8 finale would've been a much, much better "series finale" than the awful one Season 9 gave us.

(Worse, even, than Seinfeld's finale.)

I'll agree with the general consensus.
Buy seasons 1-5 and the movie.
If you want more after that then buy 6, and then 7.
If you really want more after that, buy 8.
And if you really, really want more after that, rewatch the first few seasons.

I bought them all because I wanted the complete set. I'd buy them to season 7 if you don't care if you have the complete set.
Some people may bash 6-7, but I think they have some of the best stand alones of the series. In 6 you have Dreamland 1 & 2, Drive, Triangle, Field Trip and Monday. All very good episodes that shouldn't be missed.
Season 7 has The Goldberg Variation, The Amazing Maleeni, Hungry and some half assed mythlogy. It's worth buying IMO.
I agree with seasons 8 & 9 being bad. 8 has it's moments, Roadrunners is pretty good, but it can be missed. 9 is just terrible really. Nothing good in there at all. The finally sucked too.
Season 5's two parter "Christmas Carol" and "Emily" deal with the kid made from her eggs. The cancer is in season 4.

In which season does Scully find out that some of her eggs were taken to make a baby (a little girl). And when does she get cancer?

It's in season 7 or 8, and it is almost too embarassing to watch.
I actually think during season 8, the show became somewhat good again...
at least better than season 7.
Season 9 was by far the worst season.
Personally, I don't see anything wrong with season 6. I think people just cite the movie as when the show started to go downhill (because it's an easy spot to pick out and it's easy to pretend the film is some sort of ending), but I see no difference between seasons 5 and 6 in terms of stories and quality.
Those two episodes in season 7 marked the beginning of the death of the show for me.

Thanks for all the recommendations! I already have season 1, so I will pick up 2-5 when they price drop.
I might be tempted into getting season six, since I have a massive crush on Gillian Anderson, and I remember a few good Scully eps from season 6.
How does season six end?

Season 6 was filmed entirely in the same cookie-cutter subdivision from the looks of it. Every "monster" episode was attacking some suburbanite in a bland tan-colored townhouse.
Get 1-5 and the movie. Skip the rest.

They should have stopped the show at the season (what was it 5?) and gone straight into the the movie and then gone into the movie. That way they could have had about 4 movies by now instead, like Trek, milking it for so long no one cared anymore.

Seasons 1-3 get re-released on Jan.31, and 4-6 get released on March 28.
I've heard that the later seasons are pretty bad - is there a good place to stop watching the show?
