It was weird because I could never remember the name of that show growing up (even when it was on) but I'd force all my friends to watch it when they came over and they all thought it was the coolest show ever. Then it went off the air and I could never remember the name of it, and nobody had any clue what I was talking about. Finally in college I met some super nerdy people and as soon as I said the words "Battleship in space" they blurted out that it was StarBlazers. Really fond memories, just wish it wasn't so hard to watch now.

WOW! After reading the thread title the exact cartoon to come to my mind was Pirates of Dark Water (though I was just going to call it Dark Water, it has been so long), and then I open the thread and BAM, there it is.
I liked a lot of the older Disney cartoons, too. Tail Spin, Duck Tales, and Gummy Bears.
Other's I liked:
Fox's Peter Pan (not sure what it was called)
Batman
Jem and the Holograms
Fox's X-Men

He-Man
Transformers
G.I. Joe
M.A.S.K.
Those 4 are the ones I liked the most as a kid however there were others like Exo Squad, Gummi Bears, Rescue Rangers, Thundercats, Silver Hawks, Pirates of Dark Water, and TMNT that I also watched almost religiously as well.
-edit- Just remebered Captain Power, Dungeons & Dragons, and Voltron.
Also if anybody can help me out with this early memory that is stuck in my brain I would greatly appreciate it. It was of a cartoon from the early 80's where the main characters were a vampire, a werewolf, and a frankenstein monster. And they had super powers. The vampire could change into any animal, the werewolf had super-breath, and the Frankenstein monster was super strong. For the life of my I can not remember the title of the show. I asked my parents if they remember this show but no luck. If anyone can help, thank you in advance.

The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley - Not only did you have a bunch of SCTV stars doing voiceovers, each episode had a live-action Count Floyd segment in the middle ("Count Floyd's Really Creepy Stories"). Only 13 episodes, I believe, so it would make a really great double disc set.
Ralph Bakshi's The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse - Truly smart reimagining of the classic cartoon character. Visually inventive as well. Love the episode where Mighty Mouse travels through a bunch of other cartoons and the visual style adapts to match the originals being parodied.
Beetlejuice - Missing the raunch (understandably) of the movie but again, visually smart and wittily written.
The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - The only time a Saturday morning cartoon has made me cry. Beautifully animated (for Saturday morning fare), it held the whimsy and gentility of the original Disney cartoons.
And last, but not least, the Hair Bear Bunch. Ahhhh....only in the 70's!

There was this one I watched where it was set in the "future" and all machines and vehicles were destroyed, and there were good and evil factions that had magic built into armor or weapons. This ring a bell to anyone?

Ah, all the obscure cartoons flooding back into my memory:
Stuff that's already been mentioned that I didn't think would be:
Dinosaucers (man, did they ever make any toys?)
Inhumanoids (annoyingly shown in like 10 minute increments with Jem, Bigfoot, Robotics, and others)
M.A.S.K. (is the mighty power that will save the day...)
Mighty Orbots (obviously based on the Japanese GodSigma toy)
Visionaries
toy-based Stuff that hasn't been mentioned yet
C.O.P.S. (based on Bart Sears' muscular designs)
Bionic Six (really crappy toys, but I wanted them)
Spiral Zone (a cookie to anyone who remembers this one)
Dino Riders (in the height of the dino craze)
Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors (playing on a local Spanish station)
When I was younger:
Thundarr the Barbarian
Hanna Barbera heroes (Spaceghost, Herculoids, uh, the one with the comet guy, etc.)
The Mighty Heroes (Diaperman, Tornadoman, Strongman, and Diaperman, made an appearance in Bakshi's Mighty Mouse cartoon)
Laffalympics
Man, if only I had TIVO when I was young...
You know what this shows me? That these cartoons were made to sell toys (shocking, I know). Pokemon started in videogame form, and introduced this "gotta catch 'em all" mentality (the transformers minicon concept was basically a ripoff of Pokemon, and both originated in japan), but that had been present in other forms before (most notably collecting stuff like baseball cards). 80's cartoons were merchandising machines... really the only reason they introduced new joes or transformers was to sell the next generation of toys, and you see that over time, even the venerable Optimus Prime, who no longer had a toy on the market, lost his place in the series. Sure, the best of these licensed cartoons had some character interaction and growth (I mean, who in their right mind would buy a Shipwreck action figure, before the cartoon gave him some personality?), but the underlying message was always buy, buy, buy.
They passed some kind of law prohibiting having the toy commercials on the show that was promoting the toys, which is why you don't see transformers commercials during transformers the show anymore.
Anyway, I don't think this marks some shift in society, as these types of cartoons have always been about marketing.

I was about 10 or 11 during the early 90s. And there were always two cartoons that always stood out for me. Batman, and Cops. The first thing I'd do after coming home from school was turn on the tv and watch them. Can't forget Cops, loved that show. I had a real huge crush on Main Frame.
