Like someone else mentioned, it is a blast just coming here and reading all the quotes everyone found funny and favorite moments/in-jokes. This has to be the most quoted show on this forum outside of Seinfeld.

ChrisHicks 09-27-05 10:51 AM

zap2it:

"The King of Queens," 7.1/11, and "How I Met Your Mother," 6.8/10, put CBS in a first-place tie with ABC's "Wife Swap" at 8 p.m. (ABC's numbers for the hour include football in some parts of the country). "Surface" posted a 6.1/9 for NBC to finish third. The WB got a 3.4/5 from "7th Heaven," beating FOX's "Arrested Development," 2.7/4, and "Kitchen Confidential," 2.6/4. UPN trailed with "One on One" and "All of Us."

Tracer Bullet 09-27-05 11:14 AM

Ouch. I knew AD wouldn't do very well, but being beaten by 7th Heaven just hurts.

Chew 09-27-05 11:14 AM

Ugh. -ohbfrank-

freshticles 09-27-05 11:19 AM

I didn't think this episode was that funny until I watched it again. The one thing I find about Arrested Development is it's way funnier the second time around. There's just so much to absorb that I miss so many things the first time I see it.

Red Dog 09-27-05 11:20 AM

I have a suggestion. Nobody post the ratings of this show in the future. It just serves to bring everyone down. Just enjoy the show as long as it lasts.

mmconhea 09-27-05 11:55 AM

Fox's best bet for upping the ratings this season was to get the DVD on shelves and promote it extensively- give people a chance to catch on. They didn't, and now it's too late for newcommers to catch up to this very serial plotline. Switching to a new night wasn't a bright idea either. Sorry to say it, but I don't think the ratings will get any better. The only thing that will save this show now is a strong word-of-mouth movement from its fans.

Damfino 09-27-05 12:14 PM

This wasn't one of their best, but they can't hit a home run every week and even when they only hit a double, it's still better than any other sitcom going right now.

bboisvert 09-27-05 12:30 PM

Yeah, I thought the Season 2 DVD release date was strange... why not put it out 2-3 weeks *ahead* of the S3 premiere? Not like it takes a brain surgeon to figure that one out.

I like the show. I'm not as fanatical as most here, but I do think it is very high-quality TV. It's sad to think that there isn't a large audience for this type of thing, but it looks like there isn't. I don't think anything can really save this show now. There has already been tremendous "word of mouth" during the first 2 years. If people still aren't tuning in, I don't think Fox is going to be able to resist canceling. Especially if they're being crushed by the likes of Surface and 7th Heaven.

Someone over at the-op.com had this theroy:

I think there was a consistant paradoy in play in this episode that may have left some people feeling uncomfortable, and others enjoying it. It seemed to me that this episode was poking fun at "british" humor a lot, not neccessarily just james bond, but a lot of the comments in "wee brittain" reminded me of lines from shows like the office ... take two of the michael / rita interactions:

Rita: I’m not a prostitute.
Michael: Then I shall let you live. (Chuckles.) This is my worst hello.

... and ...

Michael: Yes? Perfect. Great. And I shall drop you off alive, hooker or no. (Mouthing.)

It sounds like michael is trying to be "witty" a la Ricky gervais from the Office, and that he himself doesn't even get why its funny.

I donno, but i do think it all fits together well with the title: "for british eyes only," as in, they're the only ones who'll get it.

Personally I enjoy British humor a lot, and really thought it was a clever play by the writing staff at AD to do the episode in that format.

That makes a lot of sense to me and makes me appreciate the episode much, much more :)

Groucho 09-27-05 01:00 PM

I disagree entirely with that assessment. They've been doing the "Michael is socially awkward with women" bit since season 1.

guywall 09-27-05 01:55 PM

was that Ron Howard in the photo of George shaking Sadaam's hand?
Sorry, I have no screen shot.

I liked the episode. More Buster.

Yeah, but not spouting out lines that sounds like they were written for Tobias. I like and can go with the assessment above. I will be watching it again, that is for sure.

Good idea. Let's discuss the ratings issue in the "why aren't you watching AD" thread.

Didn't mean that I thought the references were Family Guyish because they did it first. I meant that like many references in Family Guy, the "British Eyes Only" music felt like a shallow reference that wasn't particularly witty or funny. In fact, unless I'm forgetting something, the whole "spoof" was just the music cues and wipe/title at the end.

Damfino 09-27-05 05:58 PM

How's this for irony...

I was just looking over the TV threads for the past week and the ONLY show on TV right now that is more popular on this forum than AD is Lost.

obviously the TV rating system discriminates against DVDTalk!

Does anyone know where I could find Tobias' headshots? I've been looking for them online but can't seem to find them.

I found plenty of David Cross ones, like the one above. I was thinking the pictures from the show that Tobias used as his headshots, like the one where he was in tennis garb and leather garb and so forth.

Pretty good episode. I didn't laugh as much as last week but this was more of a set-up epsiode for the Charlize storyline.

The show moved alot slower than it normally does. The 2nd season was super fast jam packed with jokes, but if you watch the first few shows of the 1st season it had a more leisurely pace. At the part where they got to Wee Britain is when the tone was very different from usual. I dont know why they cut the Next Time on.. segment cause that keeps people interested instead of tuning it out, although the ending left you kind of hanging just as well, though not as funny.

Baio's character is the best fake name ever.

I agree the whole British thing is too much of a hackneyed Family Guyish thing to do that AD doesnt need.

Quick cut to a pic of Saddam and Rummy was funny.

The show was done on such pace with a 'normal' sitcom you didnt even need narration since it was pretty simple to follow. I think the narration is kind of a turn-off for casual viewers because its very different and seems kind of pretentious that a simple sitcom would need that much explanation, especially in terms of where to laugh. It isnt until you see 5 or 6 straight shows that you see its very helpful and necessary.

EEz28 09-28-05 12:02 AM

Everyone keeps mentioning Baio's character, when did that happen, in the episode i mean (i knew he was going to be on this season), i totally missed it.

very true. while i love AD, i love it even more on dvd when i can pause and rewind. (i tend to watch AD live so normally can't do this). it's just so dense with information and jokes.
