How are you handling your conflicts?
I know many of us have Tivo, but even then there times where you may not have multiple tivo's and have to sacrifice a show. I try to catch the premiere of pretty much every show since getting a Tivo since you never know what may surprise you. The few conflicts I have had with new shows involve NBC, and it seems they are having encores on their other channels such as Sci-fi and Bravo. If I needed it, I changed the season pass to those channels instead. Has anybody had to drop a show before it even started? Any problems? I guess this is sort of venting/advice/selection thread.

One upcoming conflict is E-Ring, Lost and Criminal Minds, I think. I am going to get around that by using my SD Tivo for E-Ring. I've also got Invasion, Law and Order and CSI:NY on that night too. I'm on the fence as to whether I'll do the same for CSI:NY or just dump it altogether. I wasn't into it much last year and I don't know if I have the patience to watch it again.
Luckily, the HDTivo is a dual tuner, so I rarely have to worry about there being 3 shows on at once. |
E-Ring is a show I moved to tape on Bravo I believe. I don't have HD yet. :(
|
I have a ton of conflicts, and the only HD PVR available isn't dual tuner. I try to catch other programs during other time zones, but a lot of times, they just don't air correctly.
|
Last year, this would've been a problem. Anytime I had three shows on at the same time, I had to skip one. But, I recently got a TiVo DVD Recorder on the cheap and won't be having that problem this year.
The hardest problem isn't what not to watch, it's what to record in HD and what not to. ;) |
I just come across the shows I can't watch live/record bit by bit and see if I like them or not.
|
2-tuner HD-DVR + 2 Replay-TVs = no conflicts. :D
|
On the rare occasion that there are 3 programs I want to watch at once, I'll record two on the HD Tivo and use an antenna and the TV's tuner to (ugh) watch one live. So far the TV Gods seem to be smiling on me though & I haven't picked up many conflicts.
|
• Red Dog • 2-tuner HD-DVR + 2 Replay-TVs = no conflicts. :D das |
I only have two conflicts so far this season: Arrested Development vs. Wife Swap and Reunion vs. The Apprentice. I'll most likely watch AD live and acquire Reunion through other means. I was hoping for encores of Wife Swap on ABC Family and The Apprentice on CNBC, but it looks like I'm out of luck.
I hope TiVo comes out with a dual-tuner cablecard model by 2006 like they're saying. |
hm, the only conflict i have is lost and veronica mars. Doesn't upn replay the veronica mars episode on sunday or sat anyways?
|
I don't have a Tivo, just several VCRs. To me, having two shows on the same time is so common I don't even consider it a conflict. Three-plus conflicts are a plenty, even. And if I end up liking Night Stalker I'll actually have a 5 show conflict (CSI, Apprentice, Reunion, Everwood) for the first time (at least until something gets cancelled or moved).
I have two VCRs in my apartment, plus my computer can act as a Tivo. I also have access to additional VCRs if needbe. My main problem nights will be Tuesdays and Thursdays. Some shows are re-aired at different times or on different channels (Apprentice, for instance) so I may resort to that as well. |
Now that Head Cases sucked, the only conflict I have left is Tuesdays at 9pm: Amazing Race, Supernatural and My Name is Earl/The Office. Supernatural was re-played this week on Thursday, so if they do that next week also I will be ok.
|
I have 2 Tivos, but one is strictly for the kids. If there are more than 2 shows I want on at the same time, I choose to drop one. If it turns out to be a hit that I should have watched, there's always p2p. That's how I got into Veronic Mars and House, and now they're #2 and #3 on my Tivo this year.
|
I had 2 instances of conflicts.
I have a standalone Tivo and a dual tuner DirecTivo. I missed taping "Everybody Hates Chris" and Alias since I haven't seen it since episode 1. Though I do have the first 3 season boxsets of Alias. I'll just watch it as they come out on DVD I guess. |
Tuesday is a busy night for me. My first preemptive move is to drop Bones. ;)
|
I have 3 DVD recorders; however, I'm still going to encounter problems, especially on Tuesday nights. The reason is that different stations end/start at slightly different times and I don't want to miss even a minute of one of the shows, and I always pad the beginnings and ends. (Thus one recorder which is recording a show until padded 9:08 obviously cannot be used to record a 9:00 show on a different channel.) I have it all written out and configured on a erase board, but I think I have to catch "Nip/Tuck" on the rerun, or it won't work.)

What's all this talk about 2 and 3 way conflicts? You people don't have bigger conflicts than that? What about Thursday at 8? There's a decent show on every network during that time. I'm also interested in every show on Tuesday at 9. Even with 2 dual tuner dvr's I'll still have to make sure to watch some stuff live off a splitter and occasionally download some shows.
|
I combine my one Tivo with live viewing and download the rest.

Thursday at 8 p.m. EST is a 5-way log-jam for me, so it'll be 3 on ReplayTVs, and 2 on VCRs. That's the only time I'll need to use both of my VCRs, though I'll have to use 1 VCRs for about 3-4 other hours of the week.
|
Thankfully with the 2-tuner directTivo and my limited TV interest it's rare for conflicts to come up. When they do I just pick the one I want to see the least out of the 3 and skip it.

Wednesdays (Lost/E-Ring) and Thursdays (Alias/Smallville) are killer. Once Sci-Fi fridays go into reruns, that clears the way for Threshold and Numb3rs. Some of these nets should consider a second weekend slot! |

Here's the tentative rundown of my fall TV viewing (* = checking out, # = real time viewing, ^ = on probation):

Most of the time I will skip the show I feel I can pick up again in reruns later if I really want too or ones that don't mater if you miss an ep here or there..
Then there is the really strange issue in the Sacramento area of ALL of CBS's prime time being on one hour early so they can push a 10pm news (their news sucks by the way). Sep it's ONLY the cable and local that are early, the HD feeds OTA (over the air) are at the normal prime time slot.. soooooooooooooooo throw in having two HDcards and being able to get all networks OTA, this one hour time shift for CBS and normal cable with out a CBS time shift, I can do some really strange ---you watch too much tv-- sort of juggles. Watching a 8pm show on CBS at 7pm but then recording the show after that at the "normal" time of 9 in HD even when it's on cable at 8 so I can watch some other.......... you get the idea.. it's really strange... it also causes other issues like tonight.. With bones and Threshold both starting out here at 8pm even if Threshold should not really start til 9... |
3 dual-tuner DirecTiVos
Locals (all 7 networks) + NY & LA ABC/NBC/CBS/Fox feeds Hell, I set up 2 Season Passes each (1 east, 1 west) for most network shows just in case I get rain fade during the early run :D |
Before I went HD, the Tivo worked fine. Only on very rare occasions did I have a conflict. But since going HD three years ago, Usenet is the only way to go. More and more are high res HD rips being posted, and even the non HR-HD rips are still 16:9 rips from the HD and higher quality than SD.
Having FIOS makes it even sweeter... Five minutes or so to download an hour-long show. All that combined with a DVI cable from my computer to my HDTV makes for conflicts, schedules... Hell, I don't even know what night half the programs I watch are on anymore. :) |
Patman, as usual, our lists are quite similar. I have Direc*Tivo, so a 2-way conflict is no problem on my main TV. However, in the case of 3 or more conflicts, I have to record the show in the bedroom or basement which can mean a delay in watching it.
Like your list, * = checking out Monday 8:00 Surface * Arrested Development Wife Swap 8:30 Kitchen Confidential * How I Met Your Mother * 9:00 Prison Break Just Legal * 10:00 (Gave up on CSI:Miami last season but might add it back if I find time) Tuesday 8:00 Bones * Gilmore Girls The Biggest Loser 9:00 The Amazing Race Earl */The Office House, M.D. Supernatural * Commander in Chief * Sex, Love & Secrets * 10:00 Boston Legal # Close to Home * Nip/Tuck Wednesday 8:00 Apprentice: Martha Stewart 9:00 Lost Veronica Mars Criminal Minds * Related * E-Ring * 10:00 Invasion * Thursday 8:00 Alias Survivor Everybody Hates Chris * 9:00 CSI Reunion * Everwood Night Stalker * 10:00 Without a Trace Friday 8:00 Supernanny 9:00 Threshold * Killer Instinct * Three Wishes * (Really only want to see this once) 10:00 Inconceivable * Sunday 8:00 Cold Case 9:00 Desperate Housewives 10:00 Grey's Anatomy |
I'm going to have to purchase a VCR. I don't watch enough TV to purchase a Tivo.
There is only one show I want to watch weekly, and that is House. However, I just found out that the only other interesting show for me, My Name is Earl, is on at the same time. So, if that show is really good, I'll be buying a VCR, which I never thought I would own again. |
My 2 major conflicts this season (Lost, Veronica Mars, E-Ring, and maybe Related/Criminal Minds) and (OC, Smallville, Alias, Survivor, Joey, and Everybody Hates Chris). No idea how I'm going to get around the Thursday conflict. Definitely will get 1 live, 1 on tape, may get to tape a second. But at best that is 3. I'm hoping a lot of show will have double airings throughout the season, not jsut for premiers.
|
Only for REPLAYTV users, but I deal with my conflicts by using www.poopli.com
|
Here's another issue that some of you may encounter. Some shows are running 1-5 minutes longer than their actual time, which is creating conflicts with Tivo recording on 2 tuners.
For example, I can't record Bones on Tuesday because the Nip/Tuck (higher priority on my season pass) premiere is 92 minutes long (starts at 7pm for me on Directv) and my other tuner is already recording NCIS at 8pm. I noticed Survivor ran 61 minutes, the OC is 61 minutes and I predict Lost will run an extra 2-5 minutes as well. |
