Movies on tv in OAR

Why is it every time I see a movie on CBC (ROTJ right now) it's in OAR while US stations rarely do it. Even the cable movie channels like AMC rarely do OAR

only tcm and hd stations do it. Although alot of times a 2:35 movie is reformated to 1:78, although i saw "the mexican" on abc a few weeks ago, and was surprised it was in 2:35;1 on the hd feed.

Sci Fi channel does it all the time. So does Fox Movie Channel. Even Showtime shows movies in Widescreen now.
