The Stolen Eagle
Spoiler:
52 B.C. Eager to return to Rome after eight long years of war, Gaius Julius Caesar ends his campaign with a resounding triumph in Gaul--and news of a shattering personal loss at home. When his army's gold standard is stolen, Caesar's cousin and commander Mark Antony enlists two soldiers, Centurion Lucius Vorenus and Legionnaire Titus Pullo, to track it down. Despite their differences, the two make a formidable duo, and elevate themselves by retrieving more than just the missing standard. In Rome, Caesar's old friend Pompey Magnus is counseled by Cato, Cicero, Scipio and other old-guard members of the Senate, who worry that Caesar's popularity among the masses will rattle the patrician status quo, along with their wealth and power. Pompey too has experienced a personal loss, which Caesar's niece, Atia, looks to assuage through an offering of her daughter, Octavia. Careful to play both sides of an escalating power struggle, Atia sends Caesar a grand token of her esteem, hand-delivered after a perilous journey by her precocious 11-year-old son, Octavian.

It's finally here:banana:

I know after ABC's Empire this has a lot to live up to:lol:

Looking forward to this

calhoun07 08-28-05 10:26 AM

I don't have HBO, but I will certainly be looking at the season one release when it hits the stores!

fryinpan1 08-28-05 10:44 AM

I will check this out tonight.

Shannon Nutt 08-28-05 08:54 PM

I had my worries going into this...but it was actually quite good. Not an easy historical period to do as a TV series, but it was pretty entertaining - I'll definitely be tuning in next week.

Dr. DVD 08-28-05 08:55 PM

Pretty good show so far, definitely a good visual set up. Didn't know sex was such a big way of life back then.

fryinpan1 08-28-05 09:06 PM

I thought it was ok. I imagine it will get better, but I am not sure if I will continue to watch.

BDB 08-28-05 09:26 PM

[art] How was the male nudity[/art]

Goat3001 08-28-05 09:45 PM

I enjoyed it but it wasn't anything great. Looks like they set up something big for the weeks to come so I'll give it another shot and see how next weeks ep is.

Dr. DVD 08-28-05 09:51 PM

New shows seldom deliver right off the bat. This one had great production values, but seemed kind of slow with its build up. Atia's hair color seemed to change several times throughout the ep.

indianajdp 08-28-05 09:54 PM

I'm underwhelmed thus far, but it was only one episode. Will definitely give it more time before making any final judgements.

Watch Caligula. :eyebrow:

Pretty boring episode if you ask me. Though, of course, its all just setup for the rest of the season. I'll give it another shot.

Flynn 08-29-05 12:47 AM

Was kind of underwhelmed as well after all the buildup - BUT, the hour seemed to fly by so that was something. I liked the two soldiers, and other than Brutus it didn't seem like any of the characters were instantly likeable. What did you guys think?

Michael T Hudson 08-29-05 07:00 AM

I liked it a lot. Looks like it is going to get real good.

Quake1028 08-29-05 08:12 AM

I also liked it a lot. Whoever said the hour flew by was absolutely right. I was kind of shocked when the DVR recording ended.

marty888 08-29-05 08:21 AM

Well, count me in with the "underwhelmed". This gets one more chance, next week, which is the end of the Entourage season, and if Rome doesn't grab me big time, I'll go on HBO hiatus until next spring when Sopranos supposedly returns.

Charlie Goose 08-29-05 08:27 AM

Good, but not great. I'll watch again next week because Deadwood didn't grab me by the throat either until the 3rd or 4th episode.

Merkin Muffley 08-29-05 08:33 AM

I love reading people's reactions to first episodes. Stuff like, "I'm not impressed," "underwhlemed," "I'm only giving it one more week," "boring," etc.

You see the same reaction for EVERY show. I even remember the same reaction for Deadwood...and now that show's a DVD Talk classic.

I don't know what you people are expecting from a series premiere. You can only do so much to set up an ENTIRE SERIES in an hour.

I think it has great potential. Sign me up for the whole season.

Red Dog 08-29-05 08:44 AM

Visually impressive. That alone will keep me tuned in.

Mordred 08-29-05 10:39 AM

I thought the show was excellent. I guess I'm a sucker for all the political maneuvering it looks like this show will have. I really love that period of history too although I don't know much about the events the series appears to be covering. Atia appears to be one of the nastiest mothers ever... definitely should be interesting.

I wonder if anyone else was as turned off by the opening credits as I was. I was instantly afraid the show was going to suck after seeing them. It looked like an idea a child would come up with and didn't even make any sense.

mgoblue7 08-29-05 10:50 AM

I too hated the opening credits. I do not feel like they matched the tone of the show. The show was OK, but I thought the nudity was a bit much.

Uh ... not a "classic" with everyone. I gave Deadwood six chances before moving on to better uses of my time. And The Comeback, which I disliked from the start, was simply a slow descent into total television putrification that didn't justify any further viewing. I also stuck with Carnivale after finding the first episode boring - and it maintained it's boredom factor (obviously for enough other people also so that it only lasted two seasons.)

No, I give shows a chance, but I'll only waste so much of my time before moving on.

See: Six Feet Under - Pilot. But I don't expect any series to live up to that.

Not bad so far. Had ta intro all the characters and such, and get us into the period. I was expecting the sex and such, and know it will escalate even more. The nobilty pretty much had their way with the "plebs" (is that what they called them?) during this period as I understand.

I'm sticking with it, as HBO has only let me down with Arlis thus far.

Shut up! I'm hoping nudity is to ROME as profanity is to DEADWOOD. :)

Polly Walker is pretty hot...everyone remember her from PATRIOT GAMES?
