I guess the Richard Pryor thing isn't as obscure as I thought. Still, it seems lost on anyone born right around that time. I was born in 1980 and had never heard this.
|
Not to me, and I was born in '78. :) Admittedly, thought, I don't think I'd heard about it until around the time Lost Highway was filming and the press was covering the whole MS thing and going into his past. If you've ever seen Pryor's 1982 concert film Live on the Sunset Strip, he talks about torching himself in some detail.

mmmmmm 3D
Great list-o-3d flix Steve Phillips! I think i caught most of the 80's 3d movies in the theaters and absolutely loved the effect. 'Commin At Ya' jumps to mind as one of the greatest uses: stupid flick but tons of in-your-face effects. Polarized 3d (no longer used in main releases, but does show up at some Imax or theme parks) is the only way to go.
The red/blue 3d "effect" is, however, really dissapointing. They've used this once and awhile on tv. I think in the late 80's they did it with 'Creature from the Black Lagoon". More recently it was used for the theatrical release and DVD release of Spy Kids 3d. More annoying than anything. I am pretty intrigued by the VH1 thing because it appears to use a completely different system?? The lenses are clear - unlike polarized (which wont work on tv) and the red/blue? does anyone know how the new system is supposed to work?? |

Nothing unrecognizable, and fairly entertaining. Didn't they have those "fashion plates" things for boys too? Something with superheroes or something? Why do I remember playing with one of those...:) Oh, and at least the last two "I Love the.." things on VH1 have shown a "preview" of the first episode on the Sunday before the week starts. Just an FYI. |

I agree with everyone else that so far this run isn't that great (haven't watched 1981 yet). Hopefully it'll get better.
I'd never seen Fame before, so I never realized that the part in one "Get a Life" episode where a photographer tells Chris to take off his shirt was a reference to that movie. Ha!

Oh very cool!

There is no actual 3-D footage in this series; the glasses they are handing out at Best Buy are more of a promotional item than anything. The title is just an in joke because there were a few 3-D "part three's" in the 80's.
The lenses are the same 'rainbow' type they sometimes hand out a fireworks displays; they simply make colors pop and flair a bit. They aren't real 3-D glasses at all. I saw a bit of the broadcast last night. The Weird Al segments were cool, but I have no idea why they had him wearing the red and blue anaglyph glasses when talking about 3-D movies, as all of the theatrical stereoscopic movies of the era were in clear glasses polarized form; he really should have been wearing those instead. Oh well, I guess they like the color effect. The 1983 episode has a segment about how they screwed up JAWS 3-D which should be funny.... |
Hmm...kinda surprised by the negative reactions. I thought this was better than a lot of the "70's" and "90's" episodes. Maybe I'll just forever be a child of the 80's. :) Anyway, I really got some chuckles out of this one. Liked the "Biggest Boob" of 1980. And everyone's Neil Diamond impressions were great. Looking forward to more.

When they are spending five minutes discussing "Little Darlings" then I think that would be considered bottom of the barrel time. I would like to see another 70's version but the 80's are the "in" decade to be nostalgic about right now.

Curses! I was hoping the glasses utilized some new kinda 3d, but as already mentioned they do little more than mess with light a little bit.
As for the shows: i too am a child of the 80s and i dig the nostalgia a lot. They do a great job of finding alot of old tv footage and commercials. I suppose my main issue with the show is that it devotes too much time on one topic. Considering, after commercials are gone, each episode covers a whole year in like 45 minutes. Therefore spending like 8-10 minutes on just the movie 'Fame' seems overkill. I would also like to sea a montage of music video clips as the 80s videos rule! I was pleased to see them do a segment on the movie "My Bodyguard" as it was a fav of mine (c'mon, who of us skinny-geeky-picked on-nerds didnt love that flick......"hit him in the nose!".) As for 3d - sigh, its a shame that it is a technical nightmare for them to do polarized movies in standard theaters (need 2 projectors i think) as it is such an awesome effect. As a matter of fact there was a rumor for a while that the upcomming 3rd 'Final Destination' movie was going to be in 3d. As it takes place in an amusement park that would have rocked!!! |
Well, Bob, you can always go see CHICKEN LITTLE in digitally projected polarized 3-D next week if you live in one of the cities that's running that version....Hollywood will be testing the waters with 3-D again in a big way as people are staying home to watch HDTV and DVDs! Digital projection makes it easier and more practical, and there are quite a few movies coming in both 2-D/3-D versions in the next year or two. I'd rather see horror flicks, too!

Watched 81 and 82 tonight...pretty funny stuff. I was THRILLED to see "You Can't Do That On Television," my favorite TV show of all time when I was growing up. And slime-ing Alyson Hannigan was the icing on the cake. Too funny.

OMG! Adam Baldwin was the bodyguard in My Bodyguard? TOO funny. I didn't realize that.
Last night's shows were pretty good. I laughed SO hard when they were talking about Jaws 3-D. I've never seen it, and had no idea that it was THAT bad. Truely awful. It was also great to see You Can't Do That on Television. Great show. And I think I threw up in my mouth a little when Weird Al started eating the slime after they dumped it on his head. :yack: |
Yeah, JAWS 3-D is even worse than they said. There is some priceless dialogue in that flick.
It was odd they had all the guests wearing the red/blue glasses, though, since all the 3-D movies of the time used clear polarized kind. A whole generation will grow up misinformed! The horror! |

The glasses were ridiculous. I grabbed a bunch at Best Buy on Monday. They gave me a headache. :( |
I never even heard of the those freezing freakies gloves they showed, but I do remember hating fruit rollups!
|
ahhhh jaws 3-d. yup thats another one i caught in the theaters. i havent watched the vh1 special yet, but i hoped they showed the shot where jaws is swimming towards the people in the underwater viewing area. It was supposed to be this huge scene where jaws comes off the screen right at you....it SUCKED!....sort of a matted tail with a cheezy front part of the shark pointing at the screen.
however, if memory serves, Friday the 13th in 3d had some cool effects. i seem to recall the machette blade was particularly cool. Steve, thanks for the heads up on chicken little 3d!! i was already looking forward to it as the commercials look pretty funny. im a little confused how they can do 3d polarized light with a single digital system? Let me know if you see any write ups on it online. |
just found this messy page...does have some 3d stuff on it though, including a reference to chicken little and some other upcomming stuff
